West Virginia Angler Catches 53-pound State Record Blue Catfish
The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) announced on Wednesday that a new state record blue catfish was caught by Austin Hoffman from the Ohio River. The massive catfish took both the weight and length record when it was measured at 52.95 pounds and 47.75 inches. Hoffman, a Marshall University student studying biology, told MetroNews that he was as surprised as everyone else by the record catch.

Safari Club International Files Motion for Preliminary Injunction Against Elephant Importation Bans
Safari Club International’s (SCI) litigation team took the second step in its challenge to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (FWS) bans on the importation of sport-hunted elephants from Zimbabwe and Tanzania. SCI filed a motion for a preliminary injunction, asking the court to immediately lift the importation bans. SCI’s motion explained that emergency relief is necessary to prevent harm to those who have elephant hunts planned for 2014 and to the elephants whose conservation has been placed at risk by the FWS’s actions.

USDA Announces New Landmark Conservation Initiatives
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced today that applications are now being accepted for new, landmark conservation initiatives created by the 2014 Farm Bill. The programs will provide up to $386 million to help farmers restore wetlands, protect working agriculture lands, support outdoor recreation activities, and boost the economy.

Louisiana WFC Sets 2014 Spring Shrimp Season
The dates for the 2014 Louisiana spring shrimp season were set today at the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission based on information provided by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries biologists and on public comments.
