WATCH: Pelican Swallows Pigeon Whole

Mon, 04/13/2015 - 13:04

Contrary to popular belief, pelicans eat more than just fish. Although the bird’s distinctive throat poach is most often seen stuffed with fish, pelicans enjoy other seafood such as turtles, crustaceans, and, occasionally, even other birds. Although it is rare, pelicans near semi-urban areas have been known to scoop up the occasional pigeon.

Catching a pigeon is easy, but actually swallowing one is hard. As you can see in the below video, pelicans are not well-equipped to eat struggling pigeons. This is why some of the long-billed predators have developed an interesting tactic—they will ferry their meal to the water and attempt to drown the pigeon by dunking it underwater.

Ucles traveled to the wetlands of Louisiana in the search of the elusive alligator snapping turtle, and sought to catch one with bare hands. He was accompanied by Laura Zerra, a survival expert and cast member of Discovery Channel’s Naked and Afraid. She provided some leverage for lifting the turtle out of the water, by means of a large stick.

Kayak fishing is rapidly growing in popularity around the world. Because many of these anglers carry cameras with them, we get to see some of the incredible things that happen out on the ocean. In this video the host of The Kayak Fishing Show pulled his catch into his boat only to have it snatched out by a shark. If the shark had bitten the fish in just a slightly different place, this video would need a “graphic content warning.”

WATCH: Bear Teases Dog with Water Hose

Tue, 04/07/2015 - 13:40

It’s not a big secret that bears don’t usually like dogs. In the wild, bears and canines are natural rivals, and if you’ve ever run into a bear while walking your dog, then you would know that there is no love lost between these two distantly related animals.

So when this brown bear gets its way with a water hose, its first great idea was to torture the nearest dog with it. According to the Daily Mail, the nearly 660-pound bruin is actually a trained Siberian bear named “Tima.” The German shepherd she was spraying down in the video is one of her best friends—and probably all too familiar with her antics. The video was filmed near Jaen, Spain.

DEA Agent: Marijuana Cultivation Could Lead to “Stoned Rabbits” Unafraid of Humans

Tue, 04/07/2015 - 13:37

If you live in a state where back-country marijuana is becoming big business, it may mean that rabbit hunting got a whole lot easier. Last month, DEA special agent Matt Fairbanks gave testimony to a Utah state Senate panel arguing against a bill that would legalize medical marijuana in the state. One of the reasons Fairbanks gave was that wildlife, specifically rabbits, will take advantage of marijuana operations as an easy source of food and lose their fear of humans. In his testimony, the agent recounted a situation where a rabbit showed signs of intoxication.
