SAF, FPC, ISRA Sue to Block Illinois Gun Ban Law

Wed, 01/18/2023 - 16:30

From the Second Amendment Foundation . . .

The Second Amendment Foundation today filed a federal lawsuit challenging the recently-signed Illinois gun ban legislation, alleging it to be unconstitutional and asserting the state has criminalized “a common and important means of self-defense.” The case is known as Harrel v. Raoul.

Joining SAF in this legal action are the Illinois State Rifle Association, Firearms Policy Coalition, C4 Gun Store LLC, Marengo Guns, Inc.

.410 Bore KSG and New P17 From KelTec

Wed, 01/18/2023 - 16:00

At SHOT Show this year KelTec launched a handy, lightweight version of its KSG shotgun chambered in .410 bore. Scaled down from the 12 gauge KSG, the KSG410 is very nimble and looks like it would be a blast to shoot.

KelTec said they fired thousands upon thousands of rounds through each tester gun and they’re extremely pleased with how reliably and smoothly the KSG410 runs.

It’ll chamber up to 3-inch shells of the soft-shooting .410 bore flavor.

Polymer80 80% Pistol Blanks Are Still Available

Wed, 01/18/2023 - 15:00

With increasing crackdowns and re-interpretations of existing law, we all feared that the 80 percent frame market would dry up. Polymer80, for one, didn’t give up. Though maybe now they’re more like Polymer69?

ATF decided that a P80 frame blank was too easy for the end user to manufacture into a firearm, so tweaks were made and the current blank design, whether it’s now “80 percent” finished or 76 percent or 69 percent finished or what, has been given the stamp of approval.

SHOT Show: The PTR 63 Goes 5.56

Wed, 01/18/2023 - 14:00

PTR is all about roller-delayed legacy systems. They made their name with the G3 series in 7.62x51mm, and then a mix of 9mm and 7.62×39 rifles. These guns were quite possibly the only means a lot of American shooters have to experience the roller-delayed rifles made famous by HK.

This year they’re doing something new and bringing roller-delayed designs to the 5.56 world. The PTR 63 series brings a lighter, lower recoiling option to the roller-delayed world.

SHOT Show: Range Day With Taurus’s New Revolvers

Wed, 01/18/2023 - 12:00

I like revolvers, but I’m not a revolver guy. I still appreciate a six-gun, but they have never really been my main go-to for self-defense. Believe it or not, Taurus has me yearning for two of three new revolvers. The new Taurus 856 and 605 have both caught my attention. The main reason is the red dot mounted on top. Taurus is making revolvers that are red dot-ready from the factory, and I’m here for it.

SHOT Show: The Girsan MCP35 PI…A Compact, Easier Carrying Hi Power

Wed, 01/18/2023 - 10:00

Like any red-blooded American, I love John Moses Browning’s Hi-Power design. Last year I was quite excited to see variants from Girsan, Springfield Armory, and FN. This year the Hi-Power is still very much on people’s minds, and Girsan is delivering a rather novel design in the form of a compact model. The MCP35 PI trims about an inch off the barrel to make the pistol more compact and easier to carry if you so choose.

Strom: ATF’s Pistol Brace Rule Shows That If the Government Wants to Get You, It Can

Wed, 01/18/2023 - 08:00

That’s what the Biden Administration is doing: reversing a decade-old ruling that assured gun owners that the purchase and use of pistol braces did not violate the National Firearms Act (NFA).

I had not ever seen a pistol brace and didn’t even know they existed, but it turns out that they are pretty popular with gun owners. Between 10-40 million of them are possessed by gun owners in America according to the Congressional Research Service.

One Season Hunting with the SIG SAUER Cross Hunting Rifle

Tue, 01/17/2023 - 16:00

South Texas Vampire Pigs

Jeremy handed me the SIG Cross rifle in front of the Coach store at The Domain shopping center in Austin. He’s high class like that.

“It’s zeroed with one of SIG’s Whiskey6 scopes mounted on it. I think it’s one of their less expensive lines, but it’s really clear glass,” he told me.

Tossing the SIG Cross in the back seat of my truck, I said my goodbyes.

Chicago Prosecutors: Three Shots To The Head Is Clearly Self-Defense

Tue, 01/17/2023 - 15:00

Chicago Police wanted murder charges to be filed after a felon illegally carrying a gun shot a man repeatedly, killing him. Not only did Juan Ferba, 26, fire at least 14 rounds, striking Kristopher Willett a number of times — including three times in the head — but Ferba also hit a woman on a CTA bus with an errant round.

However, Cook County’s Soros-funded State’s Attorney Kim Foxx looked at the case and pronounced it…self-defense.

SHOT Show Range Day: JR-15 Miniatured, 22LR AR-15 for the Kiddos

Tue, 01/17/2023 - 13:00

We first saw the JR-15 at last year’s SHOT Show and I thought it was pretty freakin’ awesome! This year, they’re about ready to start shipping and I was able to put a few mags through the scaled-down AR at Range Day.

Yes! My only critical comment / suggestion after seeing it last year was a threaded barrel. When I shoot with my girls, I shoot suppressed! The JR-15 is available with a 16-inch, threaded barrel for just such use.

If you’re a 5.7×28 pistol fan — and if you’re not, it’s probably because you haven’t shot one yet — you just got another option. And options are always good.

Today, the first day of SHOT Show, Smith & Wesson announced the new M&P5.7 with a 22-round capacity and S&W’s new gas-operated, locked-breech, rotating TEMPO barrel system.

This bad boy earned a double take out of me at SHOT Show’s range day yesterday. Whoa, okay, a monster revolver with a monster muzzle brake. Where do I sign up?

This is the Taurus Raging Hunter 460 S&W Magnum Two Tone 10 in. and it’s an absolute unit.

Chambered in, you guessed it, 460 S&W Magnum, this beast has a Picatinny rail on both the top and the bottom in front of the frame.

Safariland’s New SafariVault Retention Duty Holster

Tue, 01/17/2023 - 10:30

We don’t normally note the introduction of new law enforcement-directed gear, but when the new SafariVault retention holster was dropped off by the Big Brown Truck, we were pretty blown away.

Not only is it incredibly well thought out and designed, but it’s built like a freaking tank (I think it might actually survive a car driving over it) and has two independent retention systems that will frustrate even the most determined gun-grabber.

SHOT Show: Digging Into the Really New RIA 5.0 9mm Pistol

Tue, 01/17/2023 - 10:19

Truly new guns are few and far between. Virtually everything we have now is basically a clone of something else. Sometimes the size is changed, and sometimes the shape or magazine is altered, but most new guns really aren’t so new.

On the flip side, the Rock Island Armory 5.0 is something new. Like…really new, and that’s rare these days.

Rock Island Armory is known for its imports from the Philippines and Turkey, but the 5.0 is made right here in the good ol’ United States of America.

Illinois Sheriff: I Support the Constitution and the Second Amendment, But . . .

Tue, 01/17/2023 - 10:05

There have been many questions on where I stand regarding the assault weapons ban bill just signed into law. Following the horrifically tragic mass shooting right here in Highland Park, not seven months ago, along with the mass shootings we see on a weekly basis across our nation, I issued a statement, which remains true today.

I said: “As a society, so many have become numb to mass shootings as we read about them nearly every day.

SHOT Show: The GLOCK 47 9mm Pistol Is Finally Available For Everyone

Tue, 01/17/2023 - 09:00

GLOCK, GLOCK, GLOCK…it’s all about GLOCK. GLOCK is the Marvel movie of the gun genre. Some whiners claim they release the same product over and over…but here’s the thing. It’s always worth the squeeze and it’s always successful.

The G47 was something of an enigma. It was only available to the contract holder that requested it, the Department of Homeland Security. Exclusivity breeds desire. Nothing makes people want something more than telling them they can’t have it.

SHOT Show: The Henry Homesteader 9mm Semi-Automatic Carbine

Mon, 01/16/2023 - 19:00

I’m a big fan of pistol-caliber carbines. I know a 5.56 rifle is better, but 9mm is a lot cheaper to shoot. I blame the restrictive nature of my home range maxing out at 100 yards. Maybe that’s why I love PCCs.

Admittedly, most PCCs are predictable. Base it on the AR design and and make it take GLOCK magazines. At SHOT Show range day, however, we were greeted by a new entry in the class from none other than the lever gun maestros at Henry.
