McFarlin: Steve Dettelbach Is Crucial To Fixing America’s Gun Problem

Thu, 05/26/2022 - 08:00

I’ve spent most of my life around guns. As an NRA certified pistol instructor and Army Veteran, I’ve owned and used firearms for over 20 years. And as a Black father who has lost a son, I grieve with the countless families who have felt the toll that gun violence takes on our bodies and communities. I understand, more than most, how grave a threat guns are when they fall into the wrong hands.

Anticipating the NYSRPA v. Bruen Decision? Here’s How to Watch What Happen

Wed, 05/25/2022 - 15:00

By LKB

The most important Second Amendment case in a generation was argued in November. As was covered in the TTAG post-argument analysis, the consensus was that we’ll see NYC’s “may issue” regime (and likely those of the other states that still have one) go the way of “separate but equal.”

There is also a very good chance that the Court will mandate either strict scrutiny or “text, history, and tradition” as the heightened test for evaluating anything that encumbers the right to keep and bear arms.

This isn’t a gussied-up P22. As Walther says . . .

Florida Grandma Has Second Thoughts After Killing a Home Invader

Wed, 05/25/2022 - 12:00

Do you know what you’re legally allowed to do if some guy breaks into your home? How familiar are you with your state’s Castle Doctrine? Oh, and how do you feel about firing not one, but two warning shots?

One Sunshine State home invader found out that he’d chosen the wrong house to break into. On a Sunday afternoon, the Florida Man decided to enter an elderly couple’s home in Orange County. Virginia Morrison, one of the residents, said she tried to beat him away with a broom first, but to no avail.

Sorry, Joe, But Gun Control Laws Aren’t Preventing Mass Shootings In Other Countries

Wed, 05/25/2022 - 10:00

Every time there’s a mass shooting in America, we hear the same tired arguments brought forth against individual gun rights. We’re told that other, more civilized countries have lower rates of civilian firearms ownership and stricter gun control laws, and that this must be the reason there are fewer mass shootings outside the United States.

President Biden made this exact argument in his speech last night following yesterday’s school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Michaelson: The Right to Own a Gun is a Racist, Right Wing Lie

Wed, 05/25/2022 - 08:00

Since [Heller], the Second Amendment has become gospel — literally. In a recently filed amicus brief, Texas Governor Greg Abbott argued that “Texans have long cherished the right that was confirmed by the Second Amendment, but conferred by God.”  (Actually, Jesus said, “Put your sword back in its place, for all who live by the sword shall die by the sword.”  [Matthew 26:52] But whatever.)

In fact, any day now, the Supreme Court is set to (probably) strike down a New York policy that issues “concealed carry” permits only to people who show that they need a gun for self-defense.

Tue, 05/24/2022 - 20:07

President Biden delivered brief comments this evening on today’s shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. The shooter, reported to be 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, allegedly shot his grandmother before opening fire in the school, killing 18 children and three adults. Ramos was reportedly shot and killed by a Border Patrol agent who was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with the shooter.

In his remarks, Biden hit the same notes he’s hit time and time again.

Gear Review: Nightstick SFL-11GL Shotgun Light and Laser

Tue, 05/24/2022 - 16:00

Pump-action shotguns and lights don’t always get along well. They can be tricky to use, and typically the best way is an entire forend replacement. Surefire started the trend, Streamlight followed, and now Nightstick wants to take up the mantle.

The Nightstick SFL, or shotgun forend light, replaces the pump on your gun with a big, powerful, bright flashlight. Off the bat, the big difference between the SFL and others is the option for a laser.

Ride Share Driver Shoots Her Police Impersonating Attacker…Repeatedly

Tue, 05/24/2022 - 14:00

What do you do if you think someone’s following you? How about if you know they are following you because they’re trying to play Dukes of Hazzard in order to trap you? For one Atlanta woman, the answer was apparently clear: get in a high-speed chase and then shoot the attacker.

A woman driving for a rail-hailing company in Atlanta’s Buckhead area had just dropped off a passenger. As she was trying to leave, a man in another car tried to trap her.

Horsey: Guns in the Hands of Super-Patriotic Militia Members with No Passports are a Clear and Present Danger

Tue, 05/24/2022 - 08:00

A racist with an assault weapon slaughtered 10 people at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, on May 14, but, in the days since, there has been little serious talk about gun control, except from the president and the governor of New York who, because it is their job, are expected to say something.

One reason for this is that the scourge of right-wing terrorism directed at non-white citizens is so appalling that it is hard to focus on anything else.

Nevada County Evicts Anti-Gun Judges From County Government Building

Mon, 05/23/2022 - 14:00

“Gun-free” zones are something of a contagion, particularly among government entities. When rigorously treated (through opposition and education), they can be contained to a reasonable size and cover only “essential” places like prisons. When ignored and allowed to flourish, they have a way of spreading and infecting areas around them. That’s exactly what’s happened in Nye County, Nevada.

When Bruce Jabbour, a pro-gun county commissioner, got into office in 2021, he found out that he wouldn’t be allowed to lawfully carry his pistol in his own office.

Things That Don’t Suck: Hawaiian House Shotgun Loader V2

Mon, 05/23/2022 - 12:00

What’s a Hawaiian House? It’s a website that sells a few different tactical products, a few patches, some hats, shirts, etc. I ran across a short video on Reddit showing this fancy Shotgun Loader V2 that worked like a Pez dispenser for twelve gauge rounds. I was intrigued, went to the website, and ordered two. It seemed like a new solution to carry spare shotgun ammo.

Carrying extra shotgun rounds can be a real pain in the butt.

Another New York City Subway Shooting Will Mean More New Yorkers Who Want Their Gun Rights Back

Mon, 05/23/2022 - 10:09

Earlier this year, Jeremy and I sat down with a professor from a university in the UK who is writing a book on “how the idea of freedom is understood and practiced in different communities and different parts of the USA.” She wanted to learn more about America’s relationship with and attitudes toward firearms and gun rights.

We met her at The Range at Austin and talked for two-plus hours before putting a couple of guns in her hand and letting her pull the trigger for the first time since she was a child.

The following is some of Heckler & Koch’s PR boilerplate about the company’s HK433 rifle. Of course, you have to expect some degree of self-importance from any manufacturer, maybe especially HK, and they don’t disappoint.

The new compact and modular assault rifle generation
