Silencer Shop Direct: Are We in the Golden Age Of Suppressors?
When I founded TFB back in 2007 the gun market was very different. AR-15s were very popular, but they had not permeated all the way through gun culture (best exemplified by Outdoor Channel personality Jim Zumbo’s Terrorist Rifle blog post/rant). Meanwhile suppressors were viewed with even more skepticism and hostility than black rifles by the general gun community.
Most shooters were ignorant of the benefits of suppressors. They were convinced by decades of exposure to Hollywood that suppressors were only useful to gangsters and assassins. They thought that the overt adoption of suppressors by the gun community at large would only lead to more gun bans.
The reality is that silencers are very beneficial to the community. They prevent hearing loss, reduce recoil without the punishing shockwave of a muzzle brake to all those around you (even been at an indoor range standing next to someone shooting a .338 Lapua bolt action? I have. Never again.) and they reduce the impact of huntin

PA spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Noel Detoyato announced on 18 March 2014 that the R4 carbines – which were procured to replace the army’s ageing M16A1 assault rifles – will be delivered and assigned to its troops in several tranches by the end of the year.

Ruger Recalls Select Ruger American Rimfire Rifles
Ruger recently announced a recall of a select batch of their Ruger American Rimfire rifles. The batch they’ve recalled are rifles chambered in .22 Winchester Magnum (.22 WMR) as well as .17 Hornady Magnum (.17 HMR) that were manufactured from November 17, 2013 to January 8, 2014. They’ve also included a diagram showing which rifles are affected by the recall.
The rifles affected are missing a vent hole, according to Ruger, “the hole does not serve any function during normal operation of the rifle, but is a safety feature and may help vent gas in the event of a problem such as a ruptured case head or bore obstruction, for example. We want to recall the rifles and add the vent hole.” If your Ruger American Rimfire rifle doesn’t have a vent hole on the left si
PCP Polymer Cased Ammo Warning / Review
Today on March 25th, 2014 I set out to test some PCP polymer cased ammo in some commonly available military rifles. I drug out a PTR-91 and an FN FAL with the ammo.
I function tested each rifle with 40 rounds of Winchester 7.62×51 beforehand to make sure each gun was in working order. They worked through the brass cased stuff with no problem, but with the polymer cased ammo the following occurred:
With the PTR, the first round caused a catastrophic failure, destroying the magazine:

March Madness 22LR Trickshot
Shooting Dental Floss with a 22LR? Sure no problem. In his sleep. Shooting dental floss as it swings? Please, give him a challenge! A ball at the end of the string and has to go into a small basketball hoop? Bring it!

TAC-CON 3MR Media Event, Pre-trip
So today I am headed down to beautiful Phoenix, AZ to take part in a two day media event around the 3MR trigger system. The trip will include a tour of the manufacturing facility as well as two days of range time shooting the trigger system both in a stattic target shooting mode for one day, and will conclude with a day of tactical drills. Shooting days will be at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility just south of Anthem, AZ.
I know there are still a lot of people out there on the fence, and not sure about the trigger system. I also know there are still a lot of questions about the system that they would like answered before spending the money for one. So please feel free to leave questions in the comment section below, and I will do my best to answer them while I am there. I will also be posting a daily recap, how the “learning curve” feels and photos from the facility and range time.
Stay tuned for more information!
Take-Down AR-15: The Head Down Products “Deceptus”
The DRD Paratus is cool, but the Head Down Products “Deceptus” takes the take-down rifle to a new, more elegant, level. The Deceptus uses a specialized barrel nut, upper, and handguard; the rifle is otherwise AR-15 compatible. The break-down design allows the barrel to be removed from the receiver in under 30 seconds without tools.
We reached out to Head Down products asking about the rifle and a few features. Interestingly, the break-down action allows the rifle to change calibers quickly and easily. Head Down mentioned that they will sell custom caliber kits so long as the caliber is AR-15 compatible (300 BLK, 6.8, 6.5, 7.62×
See How Hornady Bullets are Made
The Outdoor Channel’s Down Range TV has released a compelling (if highly marketing tinged) look into Hornady’s operations and bullet-manufacturing.
The video, clocking in at just shy of 9:00 is a revealing expose of the specialized machines, processes, and people that make our gun food.
Click here the picture below to be taken to the video:
Some of you may remember that the NRA did a similar video published in 2012. Unlike the Outdoor Channel, the NRA vi

An Interesting S&W Factory Error
This S&W Bodyguard 380 was sent to a home-based FFL. Manufactured last month, it was sent from the factory with no slide serrations! Members of the Smith&Wesson Forum suggested that this is no problem as long as he sells it to a customer with a pair of pliers!
EXCLUSIVE: USSG / EAA To Import Jianshe 12 Gauge AK ANNIHILATOR
A reader spotted an AK-style rifle chambered in 12 Gauge at the Norinco booth at IWA ’14. Stamped on the side, underneath “Jianshe Industry, Made in China” is “USSG COCOA, FL”. This is an import mark that means this particular gun is destined for EAA Corp. / USSG Inc. of Florida. EAA / USSG are best known for their Russian and Italian imports.
This 12 Gauge AK bears no resemblance to the Catamount Fury Chinese AK shotguns that were imported by Century Arms a couple of years ago. The receiver design is substantially different.
The stock is a import-legal s

Guest Post: A Pistol Sight for the 2020s
This guest post was written by SO of the Defense and Freedom blog.
The biggest challenge with pistols in emergencies is the decision whether to shoot or not. Yet once the decision to shoot has been made unconsciously, the most pressing challenge that remains is to hit. To hit a target with a pistol is so very difficult at all but knife fight distances that training with pistols is usually much more about the hitting than about the decision-making and safety rules.
Technology did help a lot in this regard, and it is predictable that it can help much more in the future.
The sights used by fighter pilots evolved from simple ‘iron’ sights to simple holographic sights in the late 1930s. This is where pistol users are today.
Only a few years later, around 1943, fighter pilots began to benefit from holographic sights which used gyroscope to correct for the acceleration of the own aircraft and aerial gunnery became much more accurate against maneuvering
