The Weekend Funny: Rules for Combat

Sat, 04/05/2014 - 06:08

I troll the ends of the internet for your gun-related amusement. Today’s contribution is courtesy of Poltical-Humor.com

Murphy’s Rules of Combat
  • Friendly fire – isn’t.
  • Recoilless rifles – aren’t.
  • Suppressive fires – won’t.
  • You are not Superman; Marines and fighter pilots take note. (I disagree, OORah!)
  • A sucking chest wound is Nature’s way of telling you to slow down.
  • If it’s stupid but it works, it isn’t stupid.
  • Try to look unimportant; the enemy may be low on ammo and not want to waste a bullet on you.
  • If at first you don’t succeed, call in an air strike.
  • The enemy attacks on two occasions: when he’s ready and when you’re not
  • If you are forward of your position, your artillery will fall short
  • All 5 second grenade fuses burn down in 3 seconds
  • Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than yourself.
  • When your attack is going really well, its an ambush
  • Never forget that your

Krytac Trident .22LR

Fri, 04/04/2014 - 19:33

At IWA the KRISS Group announced they will be making a .22LR under their Krytac brand. It will be an AR-15 variant style from their Airsoft line. I am eager to see some more competition in the dedicated .22LR AR market.  I shall look forward to what Krytac will be coming out with.

Mission First minimalist stock w/ cobra braid

Fri, 04/04/2014 - 16:01

Mission First Tactical has an interesting stock. The Battlelink Minimalist Stock, or BMS.  The BMS is a rather minimalistic approach to an adjustable stock. However they designed it so that the end-user can make some simple modifications if they so desire.

Here is an instructional video, from MFT, on how to wrap paracord cobra braid onto their BMS stock.

Crowd Sourcing Small Arms History

Fri, 04/04/2014 - 15:22

With the 100 year anniversary of WWI fast approaching, I had more than a few people asking me what was I planning to do.  Truth be told, I couldn’t think of anything we could handle that would do credit to the occasion.

Luckily, we have a large community of firearm and history enthusiasts who can provide their own experience and knowledge for one project to help us learn about, and remember the small arms of the  “War to End All Wars.”  So instead of tackling such a responsibility alone, the gang at C&Rsenal published a set of tutorials on how we, as a team, create line drawings of uniform scale.  We’ve started asking around for anyone who would like to work with the images, make suggestions on what to include, write content, or peer-review and expand the history of these guns.

You can participate here: Small arms of WWI: A Collaborative Project

Or just keep the link and stop in once a week to check on the progress.

Ammo Prices: 4/04/2014

Fri, 04/04/2014 - 14:11

Please enjoy our second week of posting ammo prices compiled from across the web.

We have included 300 AAC BLK per the request of a number of you in the comments from last week. We have also added a couple of new vendors.

After a couple of more weeks collecting data, we plan to show some analytics.

Again, prices posted are exclusive of shipping (unless the vendor includes that in the price). The number in parentheses following the price is the cost per round.

As always, if you have comment or witticisms, please leave them below. And if you find that some of the items are now out of stock or the prices have significantly changed, please let us know.

New Long-Range Wildcat for AR-15: the 6.5 x 40mm

Fri, 04/04/2014 - 12:01

Small Arms Defense Journal spent some significant ink profiling the development of a new AR-15 platform compatible long-range round. The 6.5x40mm (aka .264 Warrior Magnum) is not to be confused with the (relatively) common 6.5 Grendel. Developed by Mitch Shoffner, the 6.5x40mm provides performance close to 7.62x51mm NATO at short range and exceeds it at long ranges.

The 6.5x40mm would require a bolt, barrel, and potentially a magazine change. The principal differences between this and the Grendel are the x40 uses the smaller 6.8 SPC case diameter (.42″ vs .44″ of the Grendel) but opts for longer case length. It operates from M4 magazines, but for optimal performance, would require its own purpose-built feed lips. Further details on the differences between this, the 6.8 SPC and 6.5 G

A Day at Trijicon

Fri, 04/04/2014 - 09:09

Last Fall, I was invited by Trijicon to their writer event at their training facility just south of the Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. The morning session was mostly product presentation with a focus on the Trijicon ACOG family, the new battery powered reflex sights such as the RMR mini red-dot and the full size Trijicon SRS. We headed toward the range after a quick lunch.

The first thing we did at the range was taping up all the ACOG rifle optics. The setup was for doing drills using the Bindon Ai

More Australian motorcycle gang DIY firearms surface

Fri, 04/04/2014 - 06:08

Two homebuilt pistols were seized among other firearms on Tuesday by police in Sydney. They appear to be of a closed bolt design, using a plastic lower receiver with an angular magazine well. Both examples appear very well made.

Arm Braces & Pistols Legal, Even When Fired From Shoudler

Thu, 04/03/2014 - 16:39

Before you complain, yes I agree, TFB content has been too legal heavy in the past couple of weeks. But this morning when SIG Sauer asked me if I could blog the below BATFE determination letter, because they thought it would be beneficial for the community, I agreed with them. This letter affirms that it is perfectly legal for a shooter to fire a firearm by resting an arm brace, such as the SIG SB15 stabilization brace, against their shoulder, just as it is legal to rest the rear part of a pistol, such as a AR-15 buffer tube, against the shoulder.  Alex Capps can be seen shooting the SB15 from his shoulder in the above photo.

Here is the the full letter

B&T VP-9 Update: Importability

Thu, 04/03/2014 - 14:11

Recently, The Firearm Blog ran an article on the B&T VP-9.  There have been a variety of comments and questions regarding the potential sale of the gun in the United States of America.

The importation of sound suppressors into the USA are currently limited to government sales only (military and law enforcement.)  The information we’ve received suggests that ARMATI-USA will be working on importing a variety of B&T products, but the VP-9

How effective is a 16.5″ .308 bolt gun?

Thu, 04/03/2014 - 12:01

Rifleshooter built a super short precision rifle and test it to see if it is worthwhile.

Here they test it at 100 yards.

Then they take the short rifle to stretch its legs out at 635 yards.

Their results are rather impressive and makes for a very effective rifle.

Blast from the Past: WWII Archival Videos on Loading & Storage of Small Arms Ammo

Thu, 04/03/2014 - 06:08

Mesmerizing in their simplicity, the two videos below are archival instructional films from the War Department in WW2. These training videos are vastly preferable to the modern military’s forced “death by PowerPoint.”

I started to watch the first video and lost 18 minutes of my life without knowing it. At the least, its all solid advise on storage and treatment of ammunition. Preppers or those with long-term ammo storage may find these videos valuable (if not common sense).

Recover CC3 Grip & Rail System Now Shipping

Wed, 04/02/2014 - 19:33

Recover Tactical is now shipping the Grip & Rail System for the 1911-style handguns.

If you are not familiar with the product, the system is a grip replacement for the standard 1911-type pistol.  Instead of only providing new grip panels, the product also adds a Picatinny rail to the gun.  This allows standard 1911 owners the ability to easily add a white light or laser.

The Grip & Rail System is made of polymer and can be had in black, olive drab or dese

Sig Sauer Elite Performance Ammo

Wed, 04/02/2014 - 16:01

Lucky Gunner takes a look at the new Sig Sauer Elite Perfornace Ammo. I admit, I missed this too at Shot Show. They compare Sig’s ammo to a few competitor brands.

Go to Lucky Gunner to see the pretty pictures, video and ballistics gelatin review of the Sig Sauer Elite Performance Ammo.

Knights Concept S.L.I.C.K

Wed, 04/02/2014 - 15:22

When FNH was submitting the SCAR for consideration in the Special Operations Forces (SOF) Combat Assault Rifle Program, Knights Armament had their own submission.

It was called the S.L.I.C.K. (S.O.F. Light Individual Carbine Kalashnikov)

Before The Sturmgewehr: Assault Rifle Developments Prior to 1942

Wed, 04/02/2014 - 14:11

The author clears a double-feed on a malfunctioning StG-44.

The assault rifle is the defining individual weapon of warfare in the latter half of the 20th century, and the 21st. It’s history is deeply intertwined with the political and war-making developments of the era. Fast, mechanized maneuver warfare, the decline of cavalry, the continuing refinement of artillery, and perhaps most of all, the invention of the infantry mortar, meant that large formations of men firing powerful rifles at targets thousands of yards away dissolved, and were replaced by men with carbine-length bolt action rifles fighting through trenches, between bocages, and in jungles. Though by World War II trench warfare had faded from dominance, infantry were still expected to assault positions and fortifications, often more heavily defended than the trenches in the First World War were. This need, and the greatly reduced emphasis on long-range ballistics, fo

The First Ever Kel-Tec Factory Tour Video

Wed, 04/02/2014 - 12:01

This video was done by Hank Strange who has a popular channel on YouTube. Before you ask no it’s not his real name and yes we all gave him hell over his Mohawk haircut! I first met Hank at the Big 3 writers event a few weeks ago. He’s a heck of a nice guy and puts out some very good videos. He was also in the group invited to test the Tac-Con 3MR trigger which Sam wrote up.He has videos of the writers shooting AR’s equipped with this new trigger system on his YouTube channel.

Hank emailed me to let me know he had a new video ready of the first ever tour of the Kel-Tec factory. That peaked my interest personally and I felt our readers would enjoy it. It answers a number of the many questions you’ve all asked about Kel-Tec production, new products and other changes affecting higher production and greater availability.

I’ll tell you now the video is long at just over one hour. It’s thorough though and covers all but one area of the plant. That part had prototypes of new guns in it so obviously that’s off limits.

I sincerely hope you find it interesting a

New SilencerCo Supressor Offering (well, kind of….)

Wed, 04/02/2014 - 06:08

SilencerCo, known for having a sense of humor about things sent out an email yesterday about he new Wizard Staff suppressor.  Said to be the quietest suppressor of all time with 42 baffles made of the legendary Mithril.  It really was good to see at least one company put out something funny today.  I guess a SilencerCo Wizard Staff can be had for 22 thousand silver shekels, that is if you are able to locate any shekels.

I have to hand it to SilencerCo for having a sense of humor, all too often we all get wrapped up in the latest and greatest and 2A issues and forget that shooting is about going out and having a good time.  While I know this post is a “day late” let it be a reminder to have some fun next time you go out to shoot.  We have one of the best hobbies on earth, lets not waste that with being serious all of the time.  Now, I am off to call SilencerCo for a review sample…
