Fri, 03/13/2015 - 15:43

A lengthy post at Rifle Shooter Mag does a good job of examining today’s hunting bullets. Not only does it compare bonded and non-bonded bullets, it looks at many popular hunting bullets one by one.

Honestly there are some outdoor products and super handy gear items out there that simply don’t need 750 plus words to describe them. However, some of these “I wish I had thought ofthat” items I think Alloutdoor.com readers would really appreciate knowing about.

A Peak at the Beretta Pico

Thu, 03/12/2015 - 21:51

The much hyped Beretta Pico has finally arrived on dealers’ shelves. Well, sort of. The local Academy store was to get some in according to a sales flyer that came in the local newspaper. However, the counter sales team at both area stores knew nothing about it, and the company’s web site did not list the Beretta Pico either.

Kel-Tec CL42 flashlight

Thu, 03/12/2015 - 21:49

Working with high-end programmable “tactical” flashlights over the years, i found myself rather confused by the expectation that the user could remember the complex pattern of “press-press-hold-press” or some such to activate special modes under stress. My own preference has always been for simple, specialized equipment. As the space on my belt has grown scarce, I also developed a liking for smaller and lighter designs.

Why I Am Not A Doomsday Prepper

Wed, 03/11/2015 - 09:52

My first real exposure to the world of prepping came in 2008, when I became a new father and we moved to San Francisco, an earthquake zone. A lot of people in the Bay Area keep stockpiles of food and water on-hand for when The Big One hits, and since my wife was super nervous about earthquakes and I’m a former Boy Scout, we picked up a few cases of MREs and a water barrel.

Review: GMT Stubby Razel Folder

Tue, 03/10/2015 - 16:42

The Midtech Revolution began with two makers–Ken Onion and Les George. Ken Onion is generally credited with coining the term–a knife midway between a custom and a production knife. The idea was to get a few parts batched out by machines and then hand fit them one at a time. That was a few years ago. More recently, Les George took the idea and ran with it, introducing his VECP folder. It was a stripped down, batched out version of George’s Rockeye folder.

Scout During the Winter Months for Next Seasons Whitetails

Tue, 03/10/2015 - 16:37

For almost every deer hunter, winter is a long period of nothing but waiting. The fall hunt is over and there is little hunting left, plus it seems like the new season is such a long way off. Around here, winters are tough, so even the fun stuff like getting out and shooting the bow or going to the rifle range is out of reach.

StormR: Protective Clothing for Waterfowl Hunters

Tue, 03/10/2015 - 16:37

If you love hunting in some of the worst inclement weather on earth, then you need to take up duck hunting. Among other environmental displeasures the best duck hunting takes place when it is super cold, raining, sleeting, snowing, blowing a gale out of the north, and everything around you is frozen including your feet, hands, and generally your whole body. Duck hunting is some of the most fun you can have with a shotgun, a good dog and a blind full of friends.

A Rundown of My Daily Carry Options, Part I

Mon, 03/09/2015 - 19:00

In a recent article the commenters rightly pointed out that I used a lot of jargon without defining it. So in an effort to return to square one, and in response to Major Pandemic’s Batman post, I am going to run through what I carry everyday and why.

Making the best of 380ACP limited ballistics

Mon, 03/09/2015 - 18:57

With 380ACP, the traditional ammunition choices have been jacketed round nose 95-grainers or 90-grain jacketed hollow points. FMJ usually penetrates decently, but the rounded nose pushes tissue out of the way instead of cutting. JHP penetrates less, and only expands reliably in larger pistols. With pocket pistols like Keltec P3AT or Ruger LCP, the short barrels yield marginal velocity for expansion. There’s also a limit to how wide the bullet cavity can be and still feed.

Review: Dan Wesson Everyday Carry Officer’s (ECO) Compact .45 ACP Pistol

Mon, 03/09/2015 - 18:56

I am a personal self-defense trainer, and I’ve owned a self-defense gym for the past few years. I have a self-defense background in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, conventional boxing, and firearms. Whenever I train, I prepare for SHTF scenarios, which means that I study and use techniques that work – none of that showmanship garbage. In a street scenario, I want to neutralize my attacker effectively and efficiently . I prefer not to fight hand-to-hand, if I can avoid it. Using my primary carry pistol is far preferable.

Considering Spring Wildlife Food Plots

Mon, 03/09/2015 - 18:51

I was caught off guard and somewhat stunned when an owner in our hunting club suggested that we should plant spring food plots this year. As our camp DMAP coordinator, I have been advocating that strategy for twenty years, but it always fell on deaf ears. This is a private lands club of 680 acres in Holmes County.

How To Fill The Empty Between-Seasons Void

Thu, 03/05/2015 - 18:15

Well, it’s the off season. Deer and turkey hunting seasons are closed, and opening day for either seems a long way off. It’s the hunter’s lull, the long stretch of non-hunting that we dread every year. This time, I won’t let my fall-hunting self-down. I’ve found several ways to keep my skills sharp and improve the odds for next year’s deer and turkey seasons.
