Maximizing Your Trail Camera Usage

Tue, 02/10/2015 - 17:11

Over the last five years, probably no other “gadget” has changed the way we scout more than the trail camera. For many of us, running trail cameras is a hobby in itself, bringing a whole new excitement to our deer hunting efforts. Much more than just something to pass time, however, running trail cameras can give you a unique insight into the patterns of deer on your hunting properties and really tip the odds in your favor for harvesting a mature whitetail. Let’s take a look at the features to look for when purchasing a trail camera, and how to get the maximum benefit from the camera once you have made your purchase.

Seven Pheasant Hunting Tips

Tue, 02/10/2015 - 17:08

A wide variety of techniques can be used when hunting pheasants. This is probably one of the reasons pheasant hunting appeals to so many people. A lone hunter can usually hunt field edges, fencerows and small weed patches. Many enjoy the solitude and easy pace of this type of hunting. While larger blocks of cover such as standing cornfields, cattail marshes, shelterbelts and large waterways may be difficult for one hunter to cover. Several hunters working together not only find more birds, but sharing the outdoor experience with good friends can be a very important part of the hunt, too.

Video: Building a Compact Fishing Kit

Mon, 02/09/2015 - 15:39

As spring approaches, a lot of us are getting back into the mode where we’re going to start hitting the outdoors again — hiking, camping, fishing, and other non-hunting endeavors are on the calendar. If you’re out in the bush, one of the things we recommend carrying is a compact fishing kit. There are a lot of variations on the “compact fishing kit” theme, and you can even find some of them pre-made.

The E2E YouTube channel has a nice little video on putting together your own budget compact fishing kit with parts from Wal-Mart:

Go check it out, and if you find yourself doing any adventure travel in the coming months, make it a point to be prepared every single time you walk into the woods.

Six Upgrade-worthy Blade Steels

Mon, 02/09/2015 - 15:05

If you like knives, blade steel is important to you.  Blade steel is the heart of a knife, and good blade steel is very important.  But steels change and new steels are released on an almost yearly basis.  Most steels start out in cutting tools for industrial applications.  A small handful, S30V, S35VN, and Sandvik’s 14C28N, started life out as steels designed for the cutlery industry.

Range Report: G2 Research Ammunition

Mon, 02/09/2015 - 14:55

G2 Research got ripped pretty badly a year ago for over the top advertising campaign. Numerous reviews compared performance of G2 Research ammunition to FBI standards, found the results lacking and dismissed the company as a snake oil seller. I went along with this opinion, even though their ammunition was my favorite DDupleks Hexalit slug in miniature.

Browning Black Label 1911-380

Thu, 02/05/2015 - 17:43

Browning Black Label 1911-380 was the pleasant surprise of the 2015 show. Unlike the other micro .380s I tried on the same day, it was very comfortable to shoot and showed great accuracy. All nine shots touched at 7 yards, and usually formed one hole size of a quarter.

Rainy Lake, Ontario: Houseboat Fishing At Its Best

Thu, 02/05/2015 - 17:42

It is a crisp spring morning. The sun is just tipping above a ridge of dense pines on the eastern bank of a sheltered, quiet cove. Three anglers ease along a rocky shoreline in a sturdy boat. The only sounds are the occasional hum of an electric motor, the soft plops of lures landing in the water, and the wild, shrill calls of loons.

Boca Shield Shotgun and Rifle Covers

Tue, 02/03/2015 - 11:47

At the 2015 SHOT Show, I passed by a booth displaying Boca Shield camouflage neoprene covers for rifles and shotguns. It reminded me of the covers I used to see ads for all the time in hunting magazines. And it got me to thinking.

Wood N’ Stream to Offer Industry’s First Boots with 3M Thinsulate Platinum

Tue, 02/03/2015 - 10:48

I used a pair of Wood N’ Stream boots quite a bit this past deer season, and they’ve been some of the most comfortable lace-up boots I’ve ever used. They required zero break-in, and surrounded my foot with comfort. (They run a little large for size, though, and I should have ordered 11s instead of my usual size 12.) They’ve treated me well and I expect the upcoming review to be positive.

Late Season Deer Strategies

Mon, 02/02/2015 - 20:12

Have you got a dab of moxie left by now or are your cookies just about toasted? The last few weeks of deer hunting can seemingly drain the energy and senses from many deer hunters. However, truth be told this is the time of year to concentrate your hunting focus. Lots of trophy bucks have been taken late in the season even if every drop of rut is over.

Cold Weather Bass Fishing

Mon, 02/02/2015 - 19:18

Knowing some solid winter bass fishing techniques is so important during the slowest producing part of the year for fishing. Though anglers may argue about when is the best time of the year to catch fish, few will argue that winter is the best time to be on the water.

No More Chronograph? Labradar is Personal Doppler Radar That Does Much More

Mon, 02/02/2015 - 13:58

While strolling the SHOT Show, I answered the siren song that so many of us cannot refuse: Free beer. While standing in line for that, I noticed a display that caught my attention – and returned to it a while later. The booth was for Labradar, and it proclaimed that the chronograph era is over. A bold and intriguing statement.

Sat, 01/31/2015 - 17:27

Fans of John Browning’s classic Model 1886 lever-action rifle should check out the new Model 1886 takedown line introduced at the 2015 SHOT Show.

The rifles are manufactured by the Italian company Chiappa and distributed exclusively in the U.S. by Taylor & Co.

The three models include a rifle with a classic case-hardened finish, checkered Walnut furniture and traditional sights. The two more modern versions come in either a matte blue or hard chrome finish with rubber coated furniture, a sight rail and more modern sights, and a muzzle brake. All three are chambered in the .45 – ’70 Govt. cartridge with a magazine capacity of four rounds.

These models are so new they are not yet listed on Taylor & Co.’s website but should be added soon.

For more info, and to see the takedown procedure, watch this video with a Taylor & Co. rep from the 2015 SHOT Show.
