One to Watch: Lionsteel TiDust
I remember when I first starting buying and using knives, and $100 seemed like a ton to spend on a blade. When I first saw the price tag on a Sebenza I scoffed. Years later, both $100 and $300 is still a lot to spend on a blade, but it’s something I have done a few times. I have yet to pull the trigger on a Rockstead, so I guess that qualifies as financial prudence. Rocksteads have been the high water mark in terms of price and innovation in the production world for a very, very long time. But all that changed at Blade 2014.
...DIY Video: Make a 45 Pound Slingshot Bow for $5
I often get bit by the DIY bug. I’m not sure what it is… perhaps the joy of making something on my own, perhaps the satisfaction of getting the most out of my money, or perhaps just knowing I can take care of myself… whatever the reason, I like stuff like this.
It’s a simple, fantastic, wonderful thing… a homemade slingshot made from nice cheap PVC pipe and other readily-available stuff – and this slingshot is made to shoot arrows.
It does this quite well, as the video below demonstrates. It might end up costing more than $5 to make it if you don’t have suitable materials on hand, but it’s pretty clear that with a little thought and even less effort, you can make some really useful stuff. This would be great for small game hunting, bow fishing, or as a last-ditch self-defense tool – maybe against zombies?
Speaking of that – maybe Daryl Dixon of The Walking Dead should trade in his crossbow for one of these… it would be a lot lighter and offer faster reloads… hmmmmmm.
Proposed “Firearms Freedom Act Of 2015″
A recent blog post by Bob Owens at Bearing Arms lists a few suggestions for restoring a small percentage of American gun rights. Without trying to steal the thunder from the original post, here is an outline of the proposal, along with some of my thoughts:
...A Bullet Attachment That Could Save Lives?
CNN reports on a new device that is intended to give suspects a chance to live if shot. The first police department that is testing this device is in Ferguson.
Curious to know your thoughts on this device and if it should be used?
One to Watch: Spyderco Ti Pingo
The Spyderco Pingo was one of my favorite knives that I’ve reviewed in the past two years. It is, frankly, completely the opposite of everything I think I like. I thought it would be either the worst modern style knife–no lock or one hand deployment–or the worst traditional folder–ugly plastic handles and jelly bean shape. But in a perfect example of good design winning out over everything else, I loved the Pingo. It was light, it had an amazing blade shape, and it cut like a deli counter Hobart.
...February is Full of Hunting Opportunities
For many hunters the winter doldrums have set in. Most of the big game seasons out west have been over for some time. The Upper Midwest white-tailed deer hunting is over and the snow is too deep anyway. Here in the South, deer seasons are over or will be in a couple weeks. What do we do now?
...When Mosquitos Attack: Tips for Surviving a Summer in Insect Country
Ontario’s short, hot summers, and boggy northern regions are ideal growing conditions for their unofficial Provincial Bird: the mosquito. Worse, in the late spring, hordes of particularly vicious black flies emerge from pools of standing water and begin to feast.
...The Sniper Rifle to Beat: FN SPR A3G in .308 Review
When someone mentions tactical precision sniper rifles, most folks immediately think of rifles based on the Remington 700 platform. But many long-range shooters know that it’s the FN SPR line that really steals the show with out-of-the-box guaranteed accuracy.
...Ontario’s Eagle Lake: Muskie Heaven
Hall-of-fame freshwater angler Spence Petros of Chicago was fishing with a buddy one summer day on sprawling 70,000-acre Eagle Lake, located due north of International Falls, Minnesota, near Dryden, Ontario. They had good success catching a number of nice fish, when suddenly a heavy northern pike struck, and after a tough fight was brought to the boat.

If you are travelling to camp, you can’t afford to bring your firewood with you. Depending on the area you’re camping in, most of this wood will not be available. This is still a great chart to keep in mind if you ever have the choice of wood to burn.

...Using A Slingshot for Shark Hunt!
Would you ever consider using a slingshot to harvest a shark? The thought has never crossed my mind, but for some folks, it certainly has.
Looks like a slingshot… Shoots like a bow! And it’s a shark killer!Yeah, this isn’t a deer hunting related video necessarily, but I wanted to show you an awesome video and product that I came across on YouTube recently!
The product in this video is called a Bad Ass Slingshot. According to their website, it’s a high powered slingshot that meets all of the definitions, draw weights and arrow shooting requirements of a bow, as required in most states.
The Bad Ass Slingshot is designed to shoot the exact same arrow as you are using for your regular hunting bow. Many are using these slingshots (or slingbows) for hunting hogs, alligators, fish (bowfishing) and more!
Shooting a Running Whitetail
Would you take the shot? Some people believe in deer drives, while others don’t. Would you have taken the shot on this buck?
The deer hunter dropped this whitetail in it’s tracks! Here’s some awesome GoPro footage of a hunter in Norfolk County, Ontario, shooting a 12 gauge shotgun and making an incredible shot on a whitetail buck that is running.
Here’s what the hunter, Justin Walsh, had to say:
“I live and hunt in Norfolk County (Ontario). I was shooting a 12 ga. Remington 870 with the slug barrel, Winchester Super-X Sabot Slug 2-3/4″ 1 Ounce.”
“I am very confident in my shooting skills and the Remington 870, I practice shots like these all the time. I wouldn’t have taken the shot if I didn’t think I could make a clean kill. The GoPro makes it seem farther away then it actually is, it was only 46 yards when I shot.”
This looks like a great advertising video for GoPro to use!
Review: Ruger PC9 carbine
The Ruger Police carbine was designed by as a companion long arm to go with their P series pistols. This was to cash in on the trend of many law enforcement departments adding a carbine as an laternative or an addition to a shotgun for patrol cars. Ruger P series pistols use the same magazines and were offered in both 9mm and .40 caliber chambering’s. Ruger made these carbines for 10 years, 1996 to 2006, marketing them to police departments but selling them to private buyers as well.
...One to Watch: Anso Matrix Card Holder
Jens Anso (pronounced Yens An Sue) is one of the finest custom knife makers around. His designs are both useful and original. His knowledge of materials is first rate and his completely fresh approach makes for some stunning blades. And while he is a fairly accomplished knife maker, he is also an industrial designer and has made quite a few interesting, non-knife EDC products.
...Bullseye Camera Systems Remote Target Cameras
Last week, I wrote about TargetVision, which I saw at the 2015 SHOT Show range day. It was impressive, and I admired its capabilities. I then learned of Bullseye Camera Systems, and looked into their products. Both companies offer remote cameras which you can set up downrange near your target, then view the camera’s feed back at the bench on a digital device. In essence, a digital spotting scope.
...Review: Kershaw Amplitude
KAI USA, Kershaw and ZT’s parent company, is a daring company. They take all comers, challenging Gerber and other brands at the bottom of the market, and slugging it out with any manufacturer or custom maker at the top of the market with designs like the Tilt and the ZT0888 MAX. So it comes as little surprise that they are willing to make budget versions of Todd Rexford designs.
...Deer Drones
A time in the not too distant past, most of us probably considered the use of unmanned aerial drones to be the sole domain of the military. It’s a new technology that’s now in use across battlefields around the world.
