MidwayUSA’s YouTube Channel Mysteriously Disappears
Questions arose last week when the content on MidwayUSA’s YouTube channel was removed. Speculation on Reddit’s firearms forum led to two theories: an overactive copyright infringement bot that automatically removes videos, or complaints from anti-gun activists. However, because there are many gun-related channels on YouTube–as well as thousands of videos by individual hobbyists–it’s likely that it’s a technical error. Past disputes with other channels have often resulted in channels being fully restored, so hopefully it’s just a matter of time before Midway’s official channel is back up and running.
...Fastest Gun In The World?
This guy definitely has a fast shot. Watch the video below and you tell me if he thinks so too.
Young Mongolian Huntress Keeps Eagle Hunting Tradition Alive
While documenting the lives of Kazakh eagle hunters (hunters who train eagles to assist in hunting small animals) photographer Asher Svidensky came across 13-year-old eagle huntress, Ashol Pan, in the Bayan-Olgii province. Pan is the daughter of a longtime eagle hunter, and her father is supportive of her role in keeping eagle hunting alive for the next generation of Kazakhs. Although eagle hunting is a traditionally male-dominated endeavor, Pan’s father has encouraged his daughter, along with his son, to learn the skill.
...KnifeTests.com Busse Basic 9 Destruction Test
This week’s KnifeTests.com destruction test features the Basic 9 by Busse Combat Knife Co. The Basic 9 is a bit hard to find; it’s currently not available through Busse’s website, but there are some available on third party websites like forums and eBay. This knife is a hefty fixed blade, and has a reputation for being an effective combat and heavy duty knife.
...EDC History: Higo no Kami
Knife trends come and go, but some knives stand the test of time and remain popular from generation to generation. As evident by knives like the Swiss Army Knife or the Douk-Douk, sometimes less is more; durability and an iconic design can ensure a knife’s legacy.
...Best Resources for Everyday Carry
Everyday carry is hardly a new concept, but the culture is more popular than ever, thanks to the popularity of zombie flicks, superhero stories and “What’s in my bag?” features across the web. So whether you’re a newbie or an old hat at putting together your everyday kit, there’s still plenty to learn and discover on the web.
...At Home in Homer, Alaska
Driving into Homer for the first time makes one think they surely have reached the end of the world. Alaska is like that. It takes away your breath, and then refills your lungs again and again with fresh, crisp air.
...Savage Mk.II FV-SR
Savage has long done well in the entry-level rimfire rifles. Mark 2 series represented an upgrade on the basics with the addition of Accu-trigger. FV-SR model takes it another step towards versatility with a built-in Picatinny mount, target bolt handle and muzzle threaded for sound suppressors or other devices. All that for less than $300 retail! Check with your local gunsmith on the cost of threading the muzzle on an existing rifle and you will see just how good of a deal this is.
...EDC History: Bronze Age EDC
As a species, human beings are both in love with and quick to forget history. This EDC thing isn’t new. In fact, its only the acronym (or technically an initialism, as it doesn’t spell a word) that is new.
...Mule Deer Migration On Video
Wildlife biologist Hall Sawyer discovers the longest ungulate migration in the lower 48, nearly 5000 mule deer migrate 150 miles in western Wyoming.
3 Reasons to Shop at the Military Surplus Store
Military surplus stores–sometimes referred to as milsurps for short, or army surplus stores–are some of the best places to get unique, high quality gear, clothes, tools, and outdoor equipment. This might be common knowledge to some of you, but for those who have never ventured into the world of milsurps, be prepared to develop a whole new way to shop.
...The Anguish Of Turkey Defeat
By Bob McNally I missed a stud tom turkey the other morning. At 10 yards. Yep, just 10 steps away, with a tight-shooting shotgun that regularly folds toms at 40 yards. Ugh! Grrrrr! The Horror! How can such a thing happen? A standing tom, less than a stone’s throw away? Well, a sage turkey hunter once said, “If you’ve never missed a turkey, son, you haven’t shot at many.” Stark truth, for sure. I’ve missed turkeys before, several in fact. But always they were out-of-state birds, far from home with borrowed shotguns, and at 40 yards or more. This was the first goose egg (er, a, turkey egg) with my own pet Ithaca 12 gauge. It’s a gun I’ve owned for nearly 40 years, and has taken countless turkeys in a dozen states. It’s the same custom-tweaked-gobbler-hunting firearm that regularly wins money turkey shoots, and is borrowed by buddies who want to win such competitions, too. The Ithaca collected two turkey shoot wins earlier this year, in fact. After my recent miss I test patterned the gun, and at 10 yards the pellets hit perfectly,...
America the Food Desert: How Peak Oil Will Make Food Less Nutritious
There’s a great post up on Reddit that articulates something that I’ve been thinking for a while. Namely, that as people get hungrier, food won’t get more expensive — it’ll just get less nutritious and more toxic. Ultimately, the entire country will become a food desert, and even the suburbs will be the culinary equivalent of an inner-city ghetto where everyone eats junk food all the time, and where diabetes and other food-related health, behavioral, and psychological problems are rampant.
...Ruger LC9 9mm Pistol
After the enormous success of the tiny .380 ACP chambered Ruger LCP, Ruger fans kept asking for a small, single-stack 9mm as well. I think many were hoping for a LCP sized 9mm, but given the recoil of that package in .380, that size does not seem like the best concept in 9mm. Ruger saw that potential issue and produced the still very compact LC9 chambered in 9mm.
...CRKT TAO Tactical Pen
There are many times where one cannot carry a firearm, such as in church or a government facility. If you fly these days, you cannot carry a knife, either, like we could in the past. Of course, I could carry some knitting needles and a pair of scissors with blades under 4”, but being a frequent traveler, hassles usually ensue with scissors and knitting needles in the backpack of middle aged white guy. This is where the concept of a tactical pen makes sense as a defensive impact tool option.
...Long-term Water Storage for Survival
The Art of Manliness blog has a detailed article on long-term water storage options for disaster preparedness. This is a great piece to bookmark, since water is one of those things that too many people neglect, but that’s critical in any kind of emergency.
...Bushnell Elite Tactical Hunter Long Range Hunting Scope
Long-range hunting seems to be growing in popularity, if scope makers’ latest offerings are any indication. We recently published an announcement of Nikon’s New-for-2014 MONARCH 7 Custom XR Turret rifle scopes, and here’s another hat thrown into the ring of long-range hunting.
...Bond Arms Factory Tour
I am fortunate that my day job takes me all across this great country, and I found myself on the far Southwest side of Dallas Fort Worth and close enough that a trip to Granbury Texas was not an epic adventure. The trip to Bond Arms was both fun and educational. I met the owner, Gordon Bond, many of his staff, and of course his robots… yes, robots.
...Trijicon Scope Top Tactical Optic for Hunting
When the rack buck followed the smaller fork horn out of the woods line in tow behind a doe, I quickly propped up my Rock River AR .308 rifle on the shooting rail. When the Trijicon TR24’s yellow AccuPoint reticle came to bear on the target, it shined like a light glow stick in the last minutes of hunting light. This was a riflescope that immediately proved its capabilities.
...KnifeTests.com Buck Nighthawk Destruction Test
This week’s KnifeTests.com video is a five-part destruction test of the Buck Nighthawk. The Nighthawk is available through various retailers for about $73.
To test the blade, Noss first slices through a lemon and peels an apple. The edge is sharp enough that these tasks are easily completed. The knife then slices through webbing, and is hammered through a piece of wood. The blade begins to show a bit of damage after this, but is still able to carve notches into a wood plank.
The knife performs well enough for a metal and concrete test, and remains intact until a pressure test, which snaps the tip of the blade. It is still usable for an additional material tests, but eventually breaks again during a final pressure test. The handle, too, remains durable until beaten with a hammer.
Watch the destruction tests below; view the playlist by clicking the “Playlist” tab in the upper left corner. Catch up on previous destruction tests at KnifeTests.com.
