Video: The “Redneck Obliterator” Minigun
Necessity is the mother of invention, and in this case, it's a need for more firepower.
The six-barreled M134 Minigun chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO can fire about 2,000 to 6,000 rounds per minute. However, a cursory Google search finds that even a "cheap" transferable M134 goes for well over six figures, so it is not exactly a bargain bin gun. However, one enterprising gun owner determined that six SKS rifles strapped together in a gatling-style contraption will also do the trick. You unfortunately don't get to see it fired, but Ian McCollum of Read more »
Video: Maine Couple Gets Surrounded by Salt-licking Deer
Cold temperatures and heavy snow are the bane of all commuters, and that includes deer. Despite that, you might even see more of the creatures venture out onto highways or roads to lick the salty slush off the ground. This unique winter treat may be tasty for them, but for motorists it can be an additional road hazard. This couple from Maine out for a Valentine's Day drive quickly find themselves surrounded by a group of 18 to 20 deer, intent on licking the road clean.
“I said, ‘We’re surrounded!'” Dan Daley told the Read more »
Oregon Chub Makes History as First Fish to Escape Endangered Species List
Roughly about a year ago, we reported on a proposal by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to remove the Oregon chub from the federal endangered species list, which would make the tiny minnow the first fish to ever recover after being listed. On Tuesday, the USFWS announced that the fish, which is now numbered at over 140,000...
Rock River Arms LAR-47 Delta Carbine
In the firearms community, few things seem to grab enthusiasts’ attention more than hybrids. There’s something appealing about a gun that attempts to combine the best features of two or more different platforms. The Rock River Arms (RRA) LAR-47 is one carbine that does just that, mixing the action of the AR-15 with the cartridge and magazine of the Soviet AK.
Ever since I first learned of the LAR-47’s existence, I’d been eager to test one. I love AKs, but ARs aren’t really my bag. The LAR-47 seemed to be an interesting combination of the two. Last fall, RRA’s representatives...
Essential Tactics for DIY Saltwater Anglers
Captain Tony Murphy has spent a lifetime honing his saltwater skills in the shallows and depths around Key West. Here are a few of his best tips for any do-it-yourselfer out to fill a freezer this spring.
Live baby live
There may be as many different lure options on the market as there are fish in the sea, and a well-stocked tackle box should hold a good sample of them all. But when it comes to reliably provoking lots of strikes and keeping the reels in action, nothing beats live bait. Murphy likes to target small pilchards in shallow water with the use of a circular cast net, rounding up...
Australian Fisherman Catches Rare Double-mouthed Bream
Commercial fisherman Garry Warrick estimates that he brings in about 100 metric tons of fish every year, so he does not usually consider it strange to see a few deformities in fish. In fact, he told ABC News that he occasionally comes across carp with dolphin-shaped heads---and once he even saw a two-headed turtle. But one bream he recently caught in South Australia's Lake Bonney made him sit up and take notice. It was a fish that had an unusual condition called diprosopus, which...
Steyr AUG A3 M1
Conceptually, I love bullpup rifles. The idea of having an ultra-compact rifle with a full-length barrel in a package smaller than a submachine gun sounds too good to be true. Apparently Austria felt the same way, and in 1978 they deployed the first military-issued bullpup rifle: the Steyr AUG (Armee Universal Gewehr). I’ve always wanted to own one, but could never decide between one that featured a railed receiver or the iconic Schmidt and Bender scope. Apparently someone at Steyr Arms had the same dilemma, because their new variant allows shooters to switch between the two with a few...
Mountain Lion Drags Deer Under Colorado Home, Eats It as Family Watches
A family in Colorado Springs got a surprise lesson in how nature works last week when they discovered that a mountain lion stowed away under their house's deck. The family was first warned about the big cat's presence when a neighbor saw the animal in the area, and as it turns out, it was using the deck as a safe place to store a freshly killed deer.
“Evidently the mountain lion wanted his deer more than the kids, so we lucked out today,” homeowner Steve Luebbert told CBS...
Video: Giant Water Bug Drowns Snake
Giant water bugs may seem like a peaceful insects content to spend their days swimming lazily across ponds, but in truth they are vicious predators. They impale prey using a "rostrum" (a piercing mouth part) and then inject them with venomous saliva. That saliva then partially dissolves a victim's insides and the bug is able to suck up the liquefied remains.
Cool, right? We're betting that you're going to be giving water bugs a wide berth from now on, and if that doesn't convince you, giant water bugs are also reported to have one of the most painful bites of any insect. Watch one...
California Gun Owners Hold Their Breath over Decision on Microstamping Law
Second Amendment advocates in California are eagerly awaiting a court decision that could overturn the state's "microstamping" regulation, which went into effect in 2013. The recent request to overturn the provision came as the latest in an lengthy legal battle between the state and gun rights groups, including the Second Amendment Foundation and Calguns Foundation.
The Crime Gun Identification Act, which was signed in 2007 by then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, required...
Photos: 15 Taxidermy Fails That Deserve a Refund
Odds are, if it is worth sending off to a professional taxidermist, it's worth remembering. When done correctly, taxidermy is a time-honored art that restores harvested animals to near life-like perfection. From the glint in that buck's eyes to the moisture on its nose, a great taxidermist is an expert at paying attention to the details. However, some projects turn out...not as well. We're not exactly sure what happened to these specimens, but the end results range from hilarious to terrifying.

Video: Mad Wood Grouse Ferociously Attacks Young Skier
In this video, what appears to be a capercaillie---or wood grouse---is intent on attacking a young skier in the Norwegian backcountry, and continues to be aggressive even after the adults push the bird away. Wood grouses are known for their elaborate rituals during mating season, as well as their heightened aggression. It just goes to show that you shouldn't let your guard down even around seemingly harmless animals.
They sure wouldn't mind taking a few pecks out of you.

10 Stunning Albino and Leucistic Animals in North America
Card
While they may be pretty to look at, animals with albinism or leucism face many problems in the wild. In addition to sticking out like a sore thumb, white animals are sometimes born with crippling deformities and as such, rarely survive into adulthood. However, the strange and majestic coloration of some of these animals make for a once-in-a-lifetime sighting, so consider yourself lucky if you happen to run into any of these critters during your next foray into the outdoors.

Video: How to Smoke a Venison Ham
This past fall, my wife shot her first deer in 32 years. Before you read the rest of this article, you may want to watch the video here.
As you can see, she hadn’t hunted for 32 years, but she shot a deer in the first half hour of hunting this fall. Toward the end of the video you can hear me say something to the effect that it will be a good eating deer---and she says she knows what that means!
A trophy is in the eye of the beholder, and this deer was a trophy for the two of us. It left me with some decisions to make. We eat a lot of wild game...
Tennessee Teacher Breaks State’s 60-year-old Largemouth Bass Record
On Saturday the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency officially recognized Gabe Keen's 15.2-pound largemouth bass as the new state record. The massive fish shattered a record set by a 14-pound, eight-ounce fish caught by James Barnett all the way back in 1954. Keen, a high school teacher who also coaches bass fishing in his spare time, said that he never expected to nab a state record during what he thought was simply practice.
"I was sitting in about 20 feet of water just slow rolling it off a bank," Keen told Read more »
Video: A Peek Inside Orlando’s Machine Gun “Theme Park”
Where better to situate a machine gun "theme park" than sunny Orlando, Florida? High-priced facilities in Vegas may be the most famous when it comes to machine gun tourism, but this 10-lane range provides similar amenities with a characteristic Orlando flair.
“Machine Gun America provides the excitement of a machine gun shoot akin to the Los Vegas facilities, but with a twist,” the facility’s safety and training director, Wes Doss, previously told OutdoorHub. “The ranges are overbuilt and the number-one concern for our staff is safety. What it can offer people, whether they are...
Bald Eagles Make Startling Comeback
On June 28, 2007, the US Fish and Wildlife Service officially removed the bald eagle from the list of threatened and endangered species, signifying the recovery of a national symbol. Now eight years later, biologists are saying that the bird has moved well away from the brink of extinction. There are now roughly 69,000 eagles across the United States, up from the mere 500 nesting pairs that existed in 1963.
"It's hard to step away from the fact that they are our nation's symbol and knowing that they've now come back from the brink," Patti Barber, a biologist with the Pennsylvania Game...
“Less Lethal” Gun Attachment Aims for a Spot on Police Officers’ Belts
The issue of police use of force has always been a contentious subject in America, but tensions are at new highs after a number of police-related incidents late last year. Perhaps no other police department is under more scrutiny than that of Ferguson, Missouri, where 18-year-old Michael Brown was fatally shot during a confrontation with local police officer Darren Wilson last August.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the city's police department found itself under the lens of both press and advocates against police abuse, including those who called for officers to begin wearing video...
Budget to Fight Asian Carp Scaled Down, Army Engineers Ask for $500,000
Last year the US Army Corps of Engineers submitted a report to Congress that detailed options to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes, including a massive proposal that would cost as much as $18 billion to complete. Yet last week the Corps asked for just $500,000 in its budget on Asian carp, out of a $4.7 billion request to Congress. Conservation groups who have been following the spread of the invasive species and its attempts to enter Lake Michigan are now saying that sum...
6 Gun Terms That Should Be Banned
Words have power. Even the ordering of words can have dire consequences. As the ancient Greek philosopher George Carlin used to say, "It's okay to prick your finger, but don't finger your..." Well, you get the idea. Careful use of words is always prudent.
As a freedom-loving liberty champion, banning things goes against my grain. But just this once, I suppose I could take a lesson from the anti-gunners and be okay with bans as long as it's something I agree with. A little hypocrisy never hurt anyone, right?
So if I did fall off the anti-hypocrisy wagon, I might consider supporting a ban...
