Video: 7 Heart-pounding Close Encounters of the Bear Kind
Generally, the only time hunters ever want to see a bear up close is when they're actually hunting for one. Otherwise, running into a bear can be a tense situation, especially if you got several pounds of deer or elk meat on you. Brown bears are indisputably the most powerful land predators in North America, and a confrontation with one could ruin your day very quickly. Black bears may be smaller, but that does not make them any less dangerous if they get it in their minds that you're a threat. This goes double if there are cubs around.
Here is our list for the top seven scariest...
Video: The Shotgun Balloon Drop
This does not look safe.
In fact, it looks like the complete opposite of safe. Disregarding a few basic firearm safety rules and just about every instinct to keep his limbs unbroken, daredevil Erik Roner attempts a "shotgun balloon drop" at 8,000 feet. The premise of the stunt is simple enough: strap yourself to a lawn chair, attach enough balloons to said chair to make it float, and then shoot them until you begin falling.
We hope the shotgun was empty and on safe when he tossed it during his descent.

"The first confirmed report of grizzly bear activity in Yellowstone occurred on February 9," Yellowstone National Park employees wrote on the park's Facebook page. "A grizzly bear was observed late in the afternoon, scavenging on a bison...

Minnesota Police Electrocute Deer with Taser to Save It
One Minnesota police department found that in the absence of of a tranquilizer gun, a Taser can do just fine. Officers from the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department were called in on Sunday to deal with two antler-locked bucks near a park in Shorewood, Minnesota. One of the bucks had already died, but the survivor was thrashing around in an attempt to free itself. Residents had gathered nearby and were eager to free the buck, but the animal's erratic behavior made it too dangerous for anyone to get close.
Police officers at the scene said they were worried about the buck further...
Behind the Scenes with Danish Speed Archer Lars Andersen
Lars Andersen’s newest video (embedded below) showed him jumping while shooting a bow, splitting an arrow on a knife, defensively shooting an incoming arrow, and catching an arrow then returning it in mid-air.
http://youtu.be/BEG-ly9tQGk
Now with over 25 million views and counting, it has been incredibly exciting to watch worldwide interest in Andersen’s archery grow.
“It is fun when a small hobby explodes in media around the world and many [people] want to reach me,” said Lars. “But it's also a little scary how fast things go.” Andersen is a painter by profession, and...
Young Bucks: The Stories of Two Giant Whitetails Taken by Youth Hunters
Sometimes the biggest buck in the woods doesn’t fall to the person who has the most experience or puts in the most time. Sometimes fate just smiles on people in random places---as was the case for two giant bucks harvested by young hunters this past year.
Reid Rummelhart
There is no justice in deer hunting. Some guys hunt their whole lives without ever seeing a true giant whitetail. Then a 210-inch buck walks out in front of an 11-year-old. If that makes you angry or jealous, then you might want to find a sport in which there's a semblance of justice. But if you are thrilled for the young...
Photo: Bird Feeders Discover Swan’s Beak Frozen Solid
Two bird feeders in Xinjiang, China were shocked to discover that one of the swans they had been trying to feed actually had its beak frozen solid. According to the New York Post, the swan was captured from the Peacock River and eventually thawed out by a local conservation group. The group later released the bird back into the river. Experts said it is likely that the swan fell asleep with a wet beak, or while it was dipped into the...
Video: Burrowing Owl Breaks Out Its Dance Moves
Burrowing owls are unique among owls in that they burrow into the ground to make nests. They are also opportunists---sometimes, instead of excavating their own burrow, they will steal one that prairie dogs have already built. This leaves them more free time for their true calling in life: interpretive dance.
To the silky smooth tunes of Aquadrop no less.

The 5 Best 9mm Self-defense Loads
Do you want the good news or the bad news?
The good news is that there are more than five great 9x19mm defensive ammo choices. The bad news is that there are more than five great ammunition choices.
So what to choose? That depends. If you look around on YouTube, you'll see lots of ammunition tests performed in carefully-controlled scenarios. That's absolutely the best way to look at relative differences between different types of ammunition under, you guessed it, carefully-controlled circumstances. That's how law enforcement organizations do it---by necessity. How else could you really...
Free Online Class Studies Hunting’s Role in Conservation
We should probably cringe whenever someone invokes the dead to make a point, whether to rhetorically ask what they’d say about a current issue or to claim the issue is making the deceased spin, roll, or otherwise agitate in their grave.
Who are we to speak for them? The longer a person’s life and greater their intelligence, the less rigid and predictable their views often become in real life.
It’s probably safe to assume, however, that Aldo Leopold would be proud to know he helped inspire a free University of Wisconsin-Madison online...
Iowa Ice Fisherman Survives Crash Through Lake, Trek Back to Shore
An Iowa angler and his dog are fortunate to be unharmed after a tense situation on Sunday in which the man's truck fell through the ice in Big Spirit Lake. According to KICD FM, officials say that Sheldon Andrews was fishing near the Stony Point area of the lake when he tried to leave during whiteout conditions. The angler had been using an ice shack on the lake to fish overnight, but heavy snowfall on Saturday made the drive back to shore difficult.
"Because he was so disorientated and all he could see was...

Remington Outdoor Company (ROC) announced on Monday that it will be integrating Para USA under the Remington brand and transfer operations from Para's headquarters in North Carolina to Huntsville, Alabama beginning next month. It was a move that Remington has anticipated ever since the company announced early last year that a vacant Chrysler facility in Huntsville would become its main manufacturing location, an investment that cost a reported $110 million and will bring up...

There are a number of ways that your day on the ice may end up being less than fun---and quite frankly, turn dangerous---but sometimes, things happen that you never expect. Falling through a thin patch of ice or getting your snowmobile stuck are fears that all ice fishermen share, but those things aren't generally funny. These are.
So sit back as we list off seven hilarious---and mostly harmless---ways for anglers to ruin their fishing trip.
1. You're going to need a big magnet

Video: Can You Name This Gun?
Can you name this bizarre firearm?
If you guessed "the strangest shotgun ever made," well, you're close, but we need a name. This odd-looking gun is actually a blow-forward scattergun called the Cobray Terminator. The Terminator holds only one shell and was offered in 12 and 20 gauge models. What makes this shotgun unique in the eyes of many collectors is its unusual (and some might say completely impractical) method of operation. In the words of Ian from ForgottenWeapons.com, it is quite "possibly the worst shotgun ever made."
"And...
New Wolf Pack Spotted in National Elk Refuge
Officials at the National Elk Refuge in Wyoming have reported that a new wolf pack may have been spotted hunting elk, pronghorn, and sheep at the refuge.
According to the Jackson Hole News and Guide, the wolf pack was first sighted in January after it killed at least two elk just north of Jackson. Instead of belonging to one of the already established wolf packs in the area, officials now believe the refuge wolves are an entirely new...
Study: Killer Shrimp May Be the Next Major Invasive Species to Hit the Great Lakes
A species of shrimp native to Eastern Europe is now a cause for concern for biologists studying the Great Lakes. Its scientific name is Dikerogammarus villosus, but experts know this voracious crustacean simply as the killer shrimp. The shrimp itself is only about an inch long, but its large mandibles make it an aggressive predator and it is notable for its tendency to kill even when not hungry. Already a nuisance in Western European waters, researchers at McGill University said that the killer shrimp could pose a problem for the Great Lakes before 2063.
"Consequently, in 50...

Last week US Senator Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey) and Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (D-Connecticut) introduced the so-called Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Act, a bill which would ban the sale, manufacture, and possession of any magazine capable of holding more than 10 rounds. The lawmakers unveiled the bill at a joint press conference on Thursday in Washington, DC, where they were joined by activists from the Newtown Action Alliance, Senators Richard...
Geissele Super Sabra Tavor Trigger Pack and Lightning Trigger Bow
I have never been “married” to any particular rifle platform. My preference for any type or build is generally task-specific. For playing on the range or field of competition, pretty much anything goes. Failure means fewer points, no trophy, or less fame---no great loss. Real life is different, having lives (yours included) on the line is a game-changer---making reliability under any conditions key.
My experience early on with the AR platform was less than positive. My position at the South Salt Lake Police Department allowed me to try other military systems like the HK53, Micro Galil,...
