Utah Angler Discovers Baby Girl in Freezing River, Miraculously Alive after 14 Hours
For 18-month-old Lily Groesbeck, the timing of one stranger's fishing trip may have very well saved her life. An angler fishing the frigid waters of Utah's Spanish Fork River discovered the infant after finding an overturned vehicle submerged in the water. On Saturday, police and firefighters rushed into the river and worked as quickly as they could to get inside the vehicle. The water was so cold that seven of the rescuers had to be hospitalized for hypothermia, but they achieved their objective. Against all odds, Lily Groesbeck survived more than 14 hours in the car, her restraints barely...

Experience the Ultimate in Volume Wingshooting This Spring
“He may be able to bust clay targets, but that ain’t hunting. I can shoot birds in the field, where it counts.”
That’s a classic excuse heard from the guy who just finished down the ranks at a Sunday afternoon trap shoot or friendly, after-work sporting clays league. However, were he to encounter the same competitor in the field, chances are he’d get his clock cleaned there, too.

Video: What to Do if a Lion Opens Your Car Door
A family driving past a lion pride in South Africa got quite the scare when one of the felines decided to investigate their car. As the below video begins, a lion strolls over to the vehicle to see what all the hubbub is about. The car pulls up slightly, but the inquisitive lion is undeterred, even opening one of the car's rear doors---much to the panic of its passengers.
"Oh my gosh I didn't know they could do that!" somebody exclaimed.
So what did this family do? Just like probably everyone else who has found themselves in this scenario, they followed the three-step procedure of...
Video: 5 Insane Archery Trick Shot Compilations
We've all seen trick shooting, but these videos take it to a whole new level. Archery in Hollywood is often depicted as blazingly fast, unerringly accurate, and filled to the brim with unique gadgets or tricks. Whether it's Robin Hood from any of his film depictions, Legolas from the Lord of The Rings trilogy, or Hawkeye from The Avengers, we have come to expect the impossible from archers. As always, the real-life version is far removed from the make-believe of movie magic.
Except when these archers are involved. The trick shot compilations below are the result of hours...
Iowa Woman Creates “Gun Carry and Babies” Class
Melody Lauer is both a gun owner and a mother, a combination of roles that is increasingly on the rise. When Lauer announced that she would be leading a basic gun safety course last month, she hardly expected national headlines, but her class quickly garnered attention. Called simply "Babywearing and Carrying," Lauer's course trained parents how to carry firearms safely around young children. According to Lauer, starting the class was a no-brainer after reading reports of children accidentally discharging weapons, and in some cases, injuring and killing themselves or others.
"The idea for...

Controversial Captive Deer Case Appealed to Indiana State Supreme Court
On Wednesday, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller asked the state's Supreme Court to overturn a February ruling that stripped the state wildlife agency of its authority to manage captive deer. That decision, made by a three-judge panel of the Indiana Court of Appeals, concluded that the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) had overstepped its authority in prohibiting high-fence deer hunting, or the hunting of captive animals in general.
The ruling was a major victory for...
Selecting the Best Turkey Choke for Your Shotgun
Let’s consider what is “universal” about shotgun chokes for turkey hunting.
The ultimate goal is to put as many pellets carrying as much energy as possible into the head-and-neck vital zone of a tom.
And there ends the list of universalities. From there on, figuring out the ideal choke and load for a particular shotgun becomes an exercise in subjectivity---much like working up handloads for a rifle.
Goals
In building a turkey hunting rig, the pursuit centers around achieving more “rifle-like” performance from the shotgun. Maximizing the lethal range of the shotgun is...

Speaking with the Washington Examiner's Paul Bedard, the...

Video: Three-year-old Finds Shed Antler
This young shed hunter had the good fortune to find the other half of his first complete rack. It just goes to show that kids are never too young to introduce to the great outdoors, and something like shed hunting may be the perfect activity to get them out there.
And of course, nothing beats seeing that smile when they finally do spot their first antler.

Livestream: Bald Eagle Parent Covered in Snow Keeping Eggs Warm
What would you go through for your kids? This adult bald eagle seems to be pretty content in its nest as snow buries Pennsylvania's Codorus State Park. This livestream eagle cam, set up by the Pennsylvania Game Commission, is centered on the nest of a mating couple named Liberty and Freedom. On Thursday, heavy snowfall covered one of the parents as they tried to keep the eggs warm, but experts say that eagles don't generally mind the snow. In fact, eagles are very well insulated and their feathers can act as a heat shield, keeping warmth directed into the nest.

California Angler Dethrones State Record with 10.38-pound Spotted Bass
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) announced on Wednesday that the state has a new record spotted bass, caught in a Yuba County in January. Timothy Little reeled in the massive 10.38-pound spotted bass from New Bullards Bar Reservoir, which is commonly recognized as one of the top fisheries in the country for that species. The angler may not have expected the record-breaking catch, but officials said he was certainly prepared for one.
"Luckily Tim was ready that day for this rare opportunity, as he had a certified scale on his boat and a witness!" the DFW wrote on Read more »
5 Expert Turkey Hunters’ Favorite Turkey Calls
Long road trips are a great opportunity to try out new turkey calls---hands-free, of course. Although you might get a few sideways looks from other drivers at four-way-stops, kee-keeing and yelping on a new mouth call is more satisfying than just watching the yellow lines tick by. This otherwise monotonous time is better spent deciding which diaphragm calls will make it into my vest this spring, and conversely, which are going to be left behind.
Truth be told, mouth calls are not my “go-to”---I actually prefer a custom-made slate, but let’s face it, the stars have to align with a...
The Where, When, and Why of Year-round Trail Camera Placement
Don’t put your trail cameras away after the season! Here’s a calendar showing where your cameras should be placed throughout the year to help you learn more about the deer and increase your odds of bagging a big one next season.
The use of trail cameras has become a sport in and of itself. Camera users have come up with all kinds of creative ways to use the cameras to monitor wildlife activity and learn more about many different animals. Yet most deer hunters still bring the cameras out before the season and store them away after the hunt is over. That can be a mistake,...
Photos: Can You Find These 11 Well-camouflaged Critters?
No matter how good you think your eyes are, we're guessing that you'll have trouble finding all 11 of these critters. In the wild, one of the most efficient strategies for not getting eaten is to not be found in the first place. For predator and prey alike, knowing how to camouflage yourself is an absolute must for survival. It is an example that humans---while for the most part not as naturally gifted---have learned from since time immemorial. From the earliest hunters using a primitive blind of branches and leaves to modern camouflage patterns, humans have always proven themselves capable...
Video: Man Uses Saw Blade, Old Jon Boat as Motorized Ice Sled
You could get a snowmobile, or if you have an old saw blade, some metal piping, and a jon boat you don't really use anymore, you could have the next best thing. The man in this video proves that you don't need to shell out the big bucks for transportation on the ice, you just need some old-fashioned ingenuity---and a blatant disregard for your own personal safety.
We highly recommend that you don't use a saw blade for propulsion in any of your vehicles, least of all on ice.
