New Hampshire Considers Prohibiting Use of “Guided” Firearms, Other Devices for Hunting
The New Hampshire Game and Fish Department held a public meeting on Thursday to discuss a possible ban on certain devices' use in hunting, including live-action trail cameras, drones, and "guided" rifles. According to the agency, there are concerns in the sporting community that these emerging technologies could violate the principles of fair chase.
“We need to establish rules regarding these fast-changing technologies to make sure that people understand that their use for hunting is not appropriate or ethical,” said New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Law Enforcement Chief Martin...
The BAREBOW! Chronicles: Bug-eyed at Five Yards!
The Canada moose was the last of the three subspecies of North America’s largest deer to succumb to my often-suspect hunting skills. Just as it had taken me three different hunts to finally bag my Alaska-Yukon moose, so did it take me also three separate tries to claim, at last, my Canada moose. Although I’d made two serious efforts in 1995 and 1996, both failed, and it was not 'til 1999 that I had a chance to hunt the Canadian species again. I persisted in keeping faith with my outfitter friend, Dan Stobbe, and my efforts (and loyalty) were rewarded in the end with a fine Pope and Young...
6 Things You Can Do This Winter to Help You Shoot a Big Buck Next Fall
If you are sitting on the couch in front of a football game instead of spending a few hours improving your hunting property, your chances of success during the upcoming hunting season are not going to be as good as they could be. Winter is often seen as downtime by hunters, but there are a few simple improvements you can make to your hunting property during the cold months that will pay dividends in the fall.
1. Logging and hinge cutting
One of the best ways to hold deer on your property is to improve food and bedding cover areas. One of the best ways to improve both is to remove undesirable...
Mountain Lion Found Hiding under Cabin in Utah
Two families staying at a cabin near Bear Lake, Utah discovered earlier this month that they had an unexpected neighbor: a mountain lion. KXAN reported that Kyle Stringham and his family were in the process of making breakfast when they were told that there was a cougar hiding beneath a neighbor's porch.
“Her head was the size of a basketball, and the paws were huge,” Stringham said.
An avid hunter and angler, Stringham knew what a rare opportunity it was for his family, especially his...
Video: You’ll Never Guess What These Kids Pulled Out of Their Ice Fishing Hole
"What is that? What is that?!" and "Oh my god!" are generally terms that ice fishermen never want to hear---unless it's a record northern pike or something.
Have these anglers pulled up nice walleye or perch perhaps? Maybe even a boot? D&L Country Store posted this video of these kids pulling in something a little bit out of the ordinary. As most fishermen will attest, sometimes you just don't know what you're about to pull out of the water.

For those of us geeks in the hunting and shooting sports media, the annual SHOT Show in Las Vegas is a little like Christmas. We get to see all the cool new guns and gear being unveiled for the year and get some hands-on time drooling over stuff. For those of us that dig power sports stuff, there’s usually quite a bit to wet our appetites too, and 2015 did not disappoint.
Yamaha’s new Wolverine R-Spec

Rare Megamouth Shark Washes Ashore in the Phillippines
Fishermen in the Philippine province of Albay found this rare and bizarre-looking shark washed ashore earlier this week. The dead animal has been confirmed by the Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines to be a male megamouth shark, a fish defined by its massive, cavernous mouth.
"The world's 66th megamouth shark specimen, a male, washed ashore dead in Marigondon, Pioduran, Albay this morning," the Marine Wildlife Watch wrote on its Facebook page. "The animal was around 4.6 m long. The...
North Carolina Hunters Bag Massive 707-pound Wild Boar
Bruce Florence and his son Jonathan Florence are experienced outdoorsmen. Between the two of them, the Caswell County natives have hunted or fished just about anything in North Carolina, but when a recent hunting trip brought them within sight of a massive wild boar in Pisgah National Forest, they were speechless.
"He looked more like a bear coming out than he did a hog," Bruce Florence told WLOS. "He was seven-foot four-inches long. Five-foot wide on the...
California Deputy Lowered from Helicopter Inadvertently Drops on Bear Family
One Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy had a bit of a shock earlier this month when he was nearly dropped onto a startled bear sow and its family. The incident occurred in the Angeles National Forest when Deputy Ricky Hernandez was being lowered from a helicopter to investigate what was believed to be a stolen car. The sheriff's office did not specify how the car came to be abandoned within the forest, but Hernandez quickly found out that it was not empty. According to KABC, the helicopter crew...
Video: Moose Doubles as Plow in Chest-high Snow
If you've ever wondered how woodland critters get around in heavy snow, this video may be enlightening. Moose are well-adapted for winter travel thanks to their long legs. Some hunters may have noticed that moose often walk in a stiff-legged, rocking motion, which helps them to traverse snow-covered areas quickly. A moose's split hooves and dewclaws also spread out as it walks on snow, acting as a small snowshoe.
Despite the fact that they're "built for it," moose can still tire quickly when trudging through deep drifts, especially when the snow comes up to their chests like in the video...
Photos: How to Design a Trophy Room
Whether you call it a trophy room or game room, in reality it’s a memory room.
Inside is a gallery of the best mementos and artifacts from time spent outdoors. It’s a place that celebrates the beauty of field and forest, stream and sea. It’s where we go to relive the thrill of our sporting adventures, and to respect and admire our quarry.
How to design and build these special rooms is the topic of an annual seminar held as part of the Dallas Safar Club (DSC) convention and expo in Dallas. The event, most recently held January 15 to 18, 2015, is Texas’ biggest showcase of hunting...
Florida Charter Captain Pulls Trolling Motor Out of Shark’s Mouth
Captain Scott Fitzgerald of Madfish Charters almost lost a brand-new trolling motor eight miles off the Florida coast when a great white shark apparently mistook it for a chewing toy. Last week Fitzgerald uploaded images of the battered and scratched motor to Facebook and recalled being circled by the shark.

New York Lawmaker Introduces Bill to Ban Kids under 12 from Gun Shows
Should children be allowed to attend gun shows? No, according to some New York legislators. A bill was recently introduced to the New York State Assembly that would bar anyone under 12 years of age from going to a gun show. State Assemblywoman Linda B. Rosenthal (D-WF Manhattan), who introduced bill A967, stated that the purpose of the measure was to protect minors from "exposure to deadly weaponry."
The bill has no provision for minors...
The BAREBOW! Chronicles: The Paralysis of Fear
As the wounded grizzly came running obliquely toward me, the first thing I noticed about him (other than his considerable size) was the bright red arc he was pushing in front of him in the shape of a galloping, monochromatic rainbow. It was as if the area of his right collarbone had sprouted a garden hose and somebody had turned the water pressure on full blast, aiming the stream forward and upward at a 45-degree angle to the ground.
A few seconds earlier, I had not even been aware of the bear’s presence in our environs. Then, at the sound of Jack’s bowstring some 40 yards away, I...
Michigan Sheriff Deputy’s Horse Put Down Following Coyote Attack
The Lapeer County, Michigan Sheriff's Mounted Unit announced on Sunday that one of their horses died as a result of a predatory coyote attack over the weekend. The horse's owner, Lapeer County Sheriff Deputy Kallie Meyers, had been keeping the animal in a paddock near a barn on her property. On Sunday afternoon, a pack of five to six coyotes charged onto Meyers' property and managed to bring the mare down before the owners were able to intervene by releasing their dogs on the predators.
Meyers' dogs were eventually able to chase the pack off the property, but the horse's injuries from...
Hands-on with Leupold’s New D-EVO Optic
Leupold is making waves after introducing a revolutionary new optic system at SHOT Show 2015. I'd read the previews, watched the videos, and went to their booth last week excited to try out the new D-EVO offset optic.
After the show, while humming the 1980 hit single "Whip It," I am still asking myself "is it good?"
Before I get to that, you need a rough idea of what the D-EVO optic is.
It's a masterwork of engineering.
The system is a reimagining of the red-dot-and-magnified-optic combination, with the D-EVO sitting down behind any conventional red dot. The D-EVO's objective...
Don’t Leave Home Without These Snowmobile Trail Essentials
For those of us in the northern reaches, winter is a time to go outside and play just as much as summer is. Snowmobiles provide transportation and recreation for many venturing out across the snow-covered lands. To be safe and get the most enjoyment out of the ride, there are a few essential items every snowmobiler should have along for the ride.
A properly running sled
Before you take off down the trail, making sure your sled is running like it is supposed to is vital. A trailside breakdown, especially in the cold of winter, can prove to be lethal. Make sure your spark plug is clean and...
Smith & Wesson Updates the Big and Small for 2015
Smith & Wesson is no slouch when it comes to handguns. In fact, they're the second-most productive handgun manufacturer in America---they pumped out more than half a million pistols in 2012. In 2015 they'll be adding some new models to that long list of pistols and revolvers.
Ten years ago, if you'd said the only serious competitor to Glock would be another polymer striker-fired pistol from S&W, you would have sounded crazy. But the company has steadily built the M&P pistol line into a juggernaut, adding improvements and variants every year. This year is no exception. We'll...
Video: Hunters, Deputies, Wildlife Officers Team Up to Rescue Buck from Ditch
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources recently shared a video showing what can happen when game wardens, local law enforcement, and hunters work together.
"We had a very exciting morning & would like to thank Brian (Scottie) Smith our game warden, Sheriff Kelly Shouse, & Deputy Ivan Fletcher for coming & helping us," wrote Kathy McIntosh Mayes, who posted the video to Facebook. "As you can see this is what we woke up to this morning---out of all the years I have been hunting & time spent in the woods I have never seen anything like this. Just goes to prove,...
