Video: Singapore Angler Lands Bizarre, Writhing Creature
The ocean is a massive place, and saltwater anglers know better than most that strange creatures inhabit it. While most anglers dip their lines in the hope of familiar fish such as tuna, tarpon, and even shark, sometimes they get something a little bit more unexpected. According to the New York Post, 54-year-old Ong Han Boon was fishing near the island of Sentosa in Singapore when he snagged...
The BAREBOW! Chronicles: Grunt, Rake, Thrash, Charge, and Twang!
The title I’ve chosen for this story dramatizes the fundamental difference between bowhunting for moose and bowhunting for virtually every other North American big game species. Although I had hunted both Canada moose and Alaska-Yukon moose more than once in the early- to mid-1990s, none of those hunts proved successful---largely, I believe, because I kept trying to use the tactics of stealth and cunning that had served me well on all the other species I’d previously hunted. I have to admit to having been a slow learner in the Moose Department. Gradually, I learned that during the rut...
8 Items You Never Realized You Need in Your Hunting Backpack
The second day of my first bowhunting road trip to Kansas was looking perfect. The sun was about to make an appearance on the horizon and it was a cold, crisp morning during the rut. Everything pointed towards the possibility of seeing a good buck that day. Sitting in my treestand, I heard footfalls through the dry leaves---a deer was coming. I slowly took my bow off the hanger and clipped my release to the string just as the deer was about to appear in my shooting lane.
CLINK! Something fell from my hand and hit the aluminum stand on its way to the ground. My release came apart...
Video: Speed Shooter Jerry Miculek Takes on a Zombie Horde
In TV shows like The Walking Dead, it seems like every character who carries a gun is a trained marksman capable of pulling off head shot after head shot against endless hordes of the undead. Anyone who's ever moved and shot with a firearm knows that such feats of accuracy aren't that easy to do, especially when you're under stress. To add some perspective to such made-up crises, one of speed shooter Jerry Miculek's latest videos portrays him taking on a (simulated) zombie pack---complete with explosions and...
Study: Birth Control Chemicals Can Harm Fish Populations
Are birth control pills a major threat to fish in polluted waterways? That is not a question that many people would ask, but researchers at the University of New Brunswick and elsewhere are diving into the problem and what they found may surprise you. According to a study recently published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, researchers say that even moderate amounts of estrogen from birth control pills, or 17α-ethynyloestradiol...
To Serve Bear: East Coast States Encourage More Sportsmen to Hunt Bruins
States like New Jersey and New York are urging more people to take up bear hunting this year in the face of a population boom across sections of the East Coast. Earlier this year the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) loosened bear hunting regulations and quotas for upstate hunters, and now New Jersey is following suit with a campaign to put bear on the dinner table.
“It’s tasty," Kelcey Burgess, the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife's bear...
Video: African Buffalo Attacks Vet’s Truck
This video was taken by a group of veterinarians in Africa working to relocate a herd of buffalo. One of the thick-skulled creatures was in no mood to cooperate, and, as the video shows, had no problem showing his displeasure.

First Traces of Bluetongue Virus Identified in New Jersey Deer
New Jersey wildlife officials confirmed on Friday that the state's first traces of bluetongue virus have been found on two dead deer. According to the Department of Environmental Protection, the deer were discovered in Somerset and Morris County last month and tested positive for the disease, which is spread by midge bites. Experts often compare bluetongue disease to the similar epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD), as both share the same symptoms, affect the same species, and are not considered contagious. Bluetongue, however, has a...
400 Helluva Hunts and the “Incredible Lies” They Make
Thirty years ago, a hunter wrote a letter to Jim Zumbo, then-editor of Outdoor Life magazine. “It’s great you guys write about all your wonderful hunts all over the world,” Zumbo recalled the original letter saying, “but what about some of us who can’t hunt like that anymore?”
Zumbo and friends Gary and Jane Stearns saw that as a challenge. Together with Bill Brown, they founded Helluva Hunt in 1984, offering hunting opportunities to ill, injured, and otherwise physically or visually impaired sportsmen and women. Wyoming’s antelope herds have since provided the big...
INFOGRAPHIC: 4 Rack Facts You Need to Know
Antlers are the most recognizable part of a deer's body. They're the "trophy" part of a buck that most frequently causes hunters to get the aptly-named buck fever. But to many, there's still a lot of mystery surrounding these bony features. To fix that, we've put together this infographic to help educate hunters and non-hunters alike. Give it a read, and share it around!
After you're done learning about antlers, check out our infographic about deer eyesight here!

PHOTOS: The Ultimate Hunting Lodge, with a Twist
This "hunting lodge" would not be out of place in rural Montana or Idaho. However, the creator of this man cave decided to recreate the hunting lodge experience in his own suburban basement. He even went so far as to create fake windows with lights that can be turned on and off to simulate the rising and setting sun. The best part? He only spent about $107 to build the entire thing (not counting all the gear inside it, of course).

A Shooter’s Introduction to Bowfishing
I don’t fish.
I don’t have anything against fishing. In fact, I kind of like it---mainly because you're expected to enjoy a cold one while taking in the great outdoors. The only reason I don’t fish more has to with that economic principle called opportunity cost. For every hour I go fishing, that’s an hour I don’t have available for shooting, and to me, an hour not shooting feels like a century and a half. Given the choice between going shooting or going fishing, I often opt for the former.
Consequently, I know less about fishing than I do Jivaro embalming techniques.
When I...
The 10 Items You Absolutely Need in Your Bug-out Bag
The bug-out bag goes by many names: an emergency preparation kit, a grab bag, 72-hour-kit, a GOOD (Get Out of Dodge) bag, and so on. Whatever it's called, the bug-out bag is meant for one thing and one thing only---when the chips are down and you can only have what you can carry, it may help you survive. The bug-out bag is sort of like a fire extinguisher---you hope you'll never need to use it, but you'll be happy it's there when you're trying to put out a fire. While the zombie apocalypse may not be happening anytime soon, more realistic scenarios like natural disasters, power shortages, and...
Washington, DC’s Strict “May Issue” Concealed Carry Act Signed into Law
On Friday, Washington, DC Mayor Vincent C. Gray signed the License to Carry a Pistol Emergency Amendment Act of 2014, an act that was ostensibly written to bring the city into compliance with a federal court decision that struck down its concealed carry ban in July. The new emergency legislation will last for 90 days, during which city officials say they will draft more comprehensive plans for concealed carry in the nation's capital. While the abolition of DC's concealed carry ban may...
Video: Daughter’s Priceless Reaction to Her First Successful Deer Bowhunt
Chris Bryan must be one proud father after this bowhunting trip he took with his daughter Reagan. With some coaching from dad, the young huntress made a solid shot at 25 yards. In footage recorded by her father, the arrow can be seen hitting home and the deer bolts off---but the highlight of this video is the priceless reaction from Reagan afterward.
"I shot a deer daddy!" she managed to get out between giggles.
For many hunters, there are few things more rewarding than to introduce the next generation to hunting, the joy of the outdoors, and conservation of America's wildlife. Sometimes...
Colorado Bear Tries to Sneak into Hunters’ Tent
Two hunters camped just miles outside of Aspen, Colorado had a close nighttime encounter last week when a bear attempted to enter their tent, only to be pushed away. According to KUSA, the hunters were visited by a bear three times on Thursday night near a region known for its escalating bear conflicts. During the last encounter, the bear ripped open one side of the tent and had to be fought off by the hunters. Thankfully, nobody was hurt.
To officials with the Colorado...
Hunting Michigan’s Mighty Squirrels
Many hunters remember their first deer or turkey fondly, but few recall their first squirrel. For many sportsmen and women, the very first game animal they chased in the autumn woods was a squirrel (now that you’re thinking about it, I’m betting you can remember those tall hardwoods, with leaves full of bursting colors, and the bark of a distant squirrel). Michigan has ample squirrel hunting opportunities for those of us looking to make new memories this fall.
Finding squirrels
Let’s face it, it’s not too hard to find decent squirrel hunting habitat in Michigan. With hundreds of...
Colorado Black Bear Trashes Car in Search of Treats
If you live in bear territory, it might be worth your while to lock your vehicles. Bears are intelligent creatures and they can easily figure out how to open an unlocked car door---especially if there is food on the line. Residents of Castle Pine, Colorado awoke at 3 a.m. on the morning of October 6 to the sounds of a black bear trashing a car. The large animal had entered the vehicle for a doggy bag of tasty leftovers, but then found itself trapped inside the car.
“Our bears are really smart,” Jennifer Churchill, a public information officer for Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), told...
Kansas Bowhunters Asked to Help Solve Cold Case
Law enforcement officials in Wyandotte County, Kansas are urging hunters to report anything out of the ordinary in the hopes of solving a 13-year-old missing persons case. The missing person in question is Branson Perry, who was 20 when he was last seen in 2001 near Skidmore, Missouri. Officials are not disclosing why they are focusing on the case now after so many years, especially in Kansas, but it may be related to a recent find.
“We have actually found some people that have come forward with some evidence that has been located in some fields or some wooded areas,” Lt. Kelli Bailiff...
Video: Hikers Record Epic Moose Fight
This short-but-rough tussle between two bull moose was captured in Canada's Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. According to the CBC, the video was taken by Tawny Tersmette when she was about to go on a hike last Saturday.
“We were driving down the highway and rounded the corner to see the moose tumble down the right side of the road. The fight lasted over 20 minutes....
