NRA Freestyle’s ‘NOIR’: Tactical Relapse
Dom Raso meets LaSorte at the range for some tactical shooting drills. Surrounded once again by the “fight for your life” mentality, LaSorte reverts back to his tactical ways. However, he ultimately remembers shooting is more than just training to survive. It’s being a competitor, a rush junkie, an athlete...that was a close one.

Study: Fish Like to Play, Too
Of all the adjectives that people apply the fish, playful may not be at the top of the list. However, just because fish do not seem like the most playful of animals does not mean that they are completely humorless. A recent study published in the journal Ethology found that fish, specifically cichlid species like tilapia, have their own unique meaning of what it is to "play." In fact, scientists are finding that many animals that were previously thought incapable of play, like some insects, reptiles, and...

Kristy Titus is an avid sportswoman with a passion for elk hunting. Along with being an ambassador for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF), she is also a featured member on Team Elk, RMEF’s television show. I recently caught up with Kristy to talk about all things elk hunting.
Britney: Please tell us a little about your background in hunting. Have you been doing it for your entire life?
Kristy: From the time I was two years old, I started riding with my dad, on his saddle, while packing into the backcountry. I had my own mule by the age of four, and still...
Polar Bear Threat Drives Trick-or-treaters Indoors in Canadian Town
About 150 miles north of Churchill, Manitoba---the self-proclaimed "polar bear capital of the world"---lies the sleepy town of Arviat in Nunavut. Arviat is true polar bear territory, and residents are considering an unorthodox move this Halloween. According to the CBC, Arviat residents have canceled traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating this year. That is because polar bear encounters in the community have increased dramatically in recent years. Just last month, one...
Video: Joe Rogan on the “Eat What You Kill” Movement
Joe Rogan may be better known for his stand-up comedy, hosting NBC's Fear Factor, or his time as a commentator for the UFC, but he is also an avid hunter. Rogan appeared on Tuesday's episode of HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, in which he reiterated his support for the "Eat What You Kill" philosophy. Hunters are no strangers to relying on the meat they harvest from hunting season, but the adherents of this movement take it up a notch: they eat only meat that they kill for themselves. Supporters of the philosophy say that not only is game meat leaner and more nutritious,...

Stranded 79-year-old Woman Survives Five Days in Arizona Desert
Ethel Crescenzo, 79, was driving from her home in Surprise, Arizona to a casino when her fortune took a different turn. Instead of taking her chances with some dice, Crescenzo became lost near the small town of Wittmann on October 14 and ended up spending more than five days alone in the Arizona desert.
"I will say this in the very beginning, she is very poor on directions," her son, George Crescenzo, told KPHO.
In fact, she had been driving in the...
How to Bring in Big Bucks with a Mock Scrape
Scrapes are one of the whitetail's most important communication tools. Here’s how to make one of your own and really get the attention of the area’s bucks.
I have read several scientific studies on the way bucks visit scrapes. The majority of these studies were done with trail cameras positioned so they would take a photo of a buck at the scrape and record the time. Every one of these studies showed that the vast majority of mature bucks (85 to 95 percent) visited the scrapes under cover of darkness.
I have two issues with these studies. First off, they did not add any...
Video: Grizzly Drawn in by Salmon, Stays for GoPro
A remote bridge in British Columbia made for a perfect vantage point for grizzlies to spot salmon, but a poor location for placing a camera. In the video below, a family of bears decided to take a short rest on the bridge while enjoying the beautiful Canadian scenery, but one of the animals also decided to make a chew toy out of some unfortunate videographer's GoPro camera. The young bear liked it enough to carry it around before dropping it unceremoniously.

Utah Hunters Outraged after Thieves Steal Two Elk from Camp
Two hunters in northeastern Utah were speechless when they discovered that the meat from two elk they had killed was stolen from their camp earlier this month. For friends Tracy Jones and Jamie Vigil, it was a disappointing end to what had been an exhilarating week spent chasing elk.
According to the Standard Examiner, the two men were hunting with friends near the Wyoming border in an area known as Horse Creek. The hunters have returned to the same location...

Inside Bohning Archery: One of the Biggest Names in Bowhunting
To truly be innovative, you look at a need and devise a way to fill that need through a path that hasn’t been taken before. In modern archery's infancy, bowhunters and shooters were left to their own devices to construct and maintain their own equipment. Rollin Bohning, a research chemist by trade and a serious bowhunting enthusiast, wasn’t happy with the available materials used to bond broadheads to arrow shafts. His solution was to develop a new cement for that exact purpose and in 1946, the Bohning Company was formed.
When I sat down...
A Comprehensive Guide to Making Your Own Crimson Trace Lasergrips
I always thought I was pretty handy, at least until today. Then I got humbled.
You see, I had the opportunity to build my very own Crimson Trace LG-401G Lasergrips for a 1911 pistol. I was visiting the Crimson Trace factory in Wilsonville, Oregon, just south of Portland, and those crazy folks seemed to believe that even a klutz like me could make something high-tech like a four-milliwatt, instinctive-activation pistol laser. But they didn’t have enough faith in my technical ability to turn me loose on the factory floor unsupervised.
Tong was...
Video: Florida Mullet Migration in Action
Have you ever witnessed Florida's mullet migration? Of course, we mean the fish and not the geographic mobility of a certain hairstyle. Every October, swarms of these fish move along the Florida coast in a migration so massive that it can seem like the very ocean is boiling. The annual feast also draws in birds, tarpons, jacks, sharks, dolphins, and just about anything that loves a good fish dinner. When chased, mullet will explode out of the water and move in vast schools, creating a spectacle for any nearby anglers.
In the video below, a group of fishermen filmed the feeding frenzy as...
Washington Quarterback Colt McCoy Hijacks Training Field for Archery Practice
A lot of privileges come with being a quarterback, and for Colt McCoy of the Washington Redskins, that means a little bit of leeway when it comes to what he can bring to the field. What is McCoy's secret to training? Why, shooting a few arrows into a deer target, of course. The fact that he appropriates part of the team's training complex makes it all the better.
.@ColtMcCoy was 11/12 passing on Sunday. Was it because he got some extra target practice at the park on Friday? http://t.co/zHsutLoJqV

Gunsmith Builds Firearm Inspired by ‘Terminator’
Marked with the Cyberdyne logo and fully equipped with a cooling system, backpack battery system, and display panel, this firearm by Georgia gunsmith Len Savage bears little resemblance to any real-life gun. That, of course, was the plan. Savage, the owner of Historic Arms LLC in Franklin, based his gun off the plasma weapons used by futuristic robots in the Terminator Series.
According to Examiner columnist David Codrea, it is...
One in 100,000: Young Michigan Hunter Harvests Rare Albino Buck
An 11-year-old hunter from Oceola Township, Michigan took the deer of a lifetime when he shot a 12-point albino buck with a crossbow on Monday. The animal was well-known to local hunters, but Gavin Dingman ended up being the one to harvest it.
"My dad was just like, 'Take a deep breath. Are you sure you can take the shot? If you're not 100 percent, we don't want to injure it,'" Gavin told the Daily Press & Argus.
The sixth-grader was hunting with his dad, Mick...
Deer and Duck Prospects Good for Texas
Biologists with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) have good reason to be optimistic regarding the state's deer and duck population. Significant rainfall in recent months has provided a much-needed reprieve from the drought that hunters had been bracing for, and it seems that the wet conditions are good for wildlife both on land and in the air.
“I would say conditions have improved over most of the state the last couple of months,” said Kevin Kraai, TPWD Waterfowl Program Leader, in a press release....
The Best Top-water Lures for Catching Big Fall Bass in the Grass
As the grass dies off in many lakes and rivers with the onset of fall and winter, big bass generally go on a feeding spree. Phillip Criss of Scottsboro, Alabama has been bass fishing for 50 years and guiding anglers for 30 years. He currently guides on Lake Guntersville in north Alabama, considered one of the top three big bass lakes in America.
“Right now on Guntersville Lake, the bass and the bream are feeding under the milfoil,” Criss explained. “We find these fish feeding by pulling into grassy areas and listening for bluegills snacking on top of the water. In some areas, the...
