Video: Scientist Finds Dog-sized Tarantula in Guyana

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 15:33

Piotr Naskrecki, a photographer and entomologist conducting research in Guyana, recently surprised his followers by uploading pictures of a giant spider to his blog. The humongous spider is roughly the size of a puppy and is considered the second-largest spider in the world. It is called the Goliath bird-eating spider, which is perhaps a misnomer since the spider does not, in fact, usually eat birds. It does, however, eat about just everything smaller than it. It is actually so large that it makes noticeable stomping sounds when it walks. "Its...

Sometimes, You’re Just in No Mood for Hunting

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 15:19

The big buck raked the low limbs, velvet still hanging from his hardened horns. A light dust, creating a momentary haze, blurred the distinct path for my arrow flight. From my stand he was 29 yards, and I’d been watching him for over half an hour rake trees and browse. Occasionally, a doe slipped through the clearing and then off into the thicket where a flick of the tail was the only remaining sign of her presence. Another flick, a flash of white, and then she was gone. And the buck continued on, raking the shrubs, munching on acorns and elevating my heart’s beat to an alarming rate....

Twelve-year-old Angler Lands Junior World Record Bluefin Tuna

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 14:48

Few parents were as proud as John and Chandra Gavin when their daughter caught a 618-pound beast of a bluefin tuna earlier this month. Although 12-year-old Jenna Gavin grew up around fishing---her parents own Giant Bluefin Tuna Charters in Nova Scotia---she had never landed a fish that big before. "I was so amazed at how big it looked and that a twelve year old girl could reel in that big a fish!" Jenna wrote to OutdoorHub in an email. It was big enough to challenge the current junior female world record, which belongs to a 431-pound...

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 08:06

What happens when you bring heavy rain and flooding to one of the most alligator-dense lakes in Florida? Well, visitors to the Black Hammock Bar and Restaurant in Oviedo can now watch the scaly reptiles swim down the street while sitting down to dinner. The restaurant is part of Black Hammock Adventures on the shore of Lake Jesup. Recent rainfall in the St. Johns River has surged water levels and as a result, alligators are now swimming freely through what had been part of the shoreline. Surprisingly, many residents say that it is not all that unusual. "It's a nice, laid-back place to...

Researchers Look to Sharks to Help Control Invasive Lionfish

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 08:03

Few fish are as unwelcome in Florida waters as lionfish. This invasive species is causing no shortage of headaches for marine conservationists, and the efforts to stem their growth are pursuing slowly. While some state wildlife officials contend that anglers are the key to controlling the lionfish population, independent researchers have their own ideas. Some of these methods are seemingly far-fetched, such as using submarines to harvest lionfish in bulk, while others are...

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 07:48

Whether this season will see you making your first out-of-state or out-of-country trip with a shotgun or your thousandth, here are some time-tested tips for getting from Point A to B with no stress! 1. Leave your gun at home. If you’re planning a trip to a distant location like Argentina for doves, look into renting guns from your outfitter. There’s pleasure in shooting your own guns, but you owe it to yourself to compare that benefit with the reduced stress of international airline travel without guns. Purely comparing costs, it’s likely a wash. Import permits and inspection fees to...

Traditional Fox Hunters Pivoting Toward Coyotes

Fri, 10/17/2014 - 14:56

The sight of a mounted fox hunter in traditional attire---including red blazers and navy coats---is rare these days, and it seems that their quarry is rarer still. The coyote population on the East Coast is growing and in some areas pushing into fox territory. For the fox hunters in these regions, fewer foxes means that more and more clubs are finding coyotes a challenging, if unusual, substitute. “What the coyote has done is made [hunting] more difficult because the fox didn’t run into other areas.” Dennis Foster, executive director of the Virginia-based Masters of Foxhounds...

Video: Motocross Spectator Leaps over Crash, Continues Talking on Phone

Fri, 10/17/2014 - 07:32

No matter how suave you think you are, there's always a person out there to knock you down a peg. Today, it's this spectator in the Grand National Cross Country event in St. Clairsville, Ohio. A motorcycle jump went awry and both the bike and its rider are launched into the crowd. Just as it looked like the bike was about to clip a distracted bystander on his phone, the man deftly leaps out of the way and even nonchalantly continues his conversation. It must've been an important call. Thankfully, the bike was stopped by a small tree and it appears that nobody was seriously injured. As...

Thu, 10/16/2014 - 16:33

On the last weekend of September, Kentucky's Rockcastle Shooting Center hosted the 2014 Bullpup Convention. I made the long flight down from Canada to tinker with some of the best bullpup guns currently available, and to get a peek into the future of the platform. If you’ve never heard the word before, a bullpup-pattern rifle places the magazine well behind the trigger, effectively reducing the overall length of the firearm while keeping a full-length barrel. The "classic" bullpup that most frequently comes to mind is the Steyr AUG,...

Video: Sea Lion Tosses Fisherman Across Ship

Thu, 10/16/2014 - 07:33

Sea lions aren't typically thought of as dangerous, but these sea mammals are not to be trifled with. In this video filmed by a group of commercial fishermen, the crew cuts free a sea lion trapped in a fishing net. These underwater predators will occasionally swim into nets to eat as many fish as possible before making a hasty escape, but they are sometimes hauled up with the rest of the catch. This one did not appreciate the experience, and took out its anger on one of the anglers and the boat's dog. http://youtu.be/a5qYaTazZ40...

Texas Officials Declare October “Hog Out Month”

Thu, 10/16/2014 - 07:27

Over five million feral pigs reside in the United States, and half of that five million are in Texas. The pig population there has been described by wildlife experts as one of the most pressing conservation issues in the state, and officials want the pigs gone. Not only do the unruly swine cause more than $52 million in agricultural damages every year, they are also in direct competition with wildlife such as whitetail deer, turkey, and quail. As part of a new concentrated effort to increase management efforts, the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) has declared October "Hog Out...
