An Alabama teen who is charged with the murder of a prostitute told authorities that he shot the woman after she attempted to rob him at gunpoint.

One of the bullets from the pharmacist’s gun struck the suspect’s gun.

Ever since the first firearm design was traced out, shooters have looked to make a better one. This path has led to hundreds of innovative and ground breaking designs, establishing new standards and ultimately moving the modernization of firearms in a positive direction. Then, there are those that just plain didn’t. Here are five ugly ducklings for which there would be no beautiful swan happy ending:

If you’re a fan of most zombie, sci-fi, superhero or otherwise apocalyptic movies, chances are you’ll find this little 15-minute gem entertaining.

The plot of the mini-movie, which is directed by Mitch Cohen, centers around the uninfected battling it out with the infected during a zombie apocalypse in the not-too-distant future, while life is meanwhile being discovered on the not-too-far planet of Mars.

While responding to a call about an assault Tuesday night, an NYPD sergeant was struck by a bullet from the gun of a fellow officer.

The two officers were in an apartment building when someone let a Pit Bull out into the hallway. The dog came at the officers, at such time, one of the officers fired a shot. The bullet struck the dog, but apparently ricocheted off of the wall and struck the sergeant in the foot.

The sergeant was treated for the injury and was last listed in stable condition. The dog is expected to be okay as well.

In part I, I wrote that it’s pretty fruitless for shooters to compare a Glock or a 1911.  I haven’t changed my opinion, but since people will continue to pose this loaded question—which is better a Glock or a 1911?—here’s my take on it and what I’d choose by category:

The concept of lawful concealed carry without a permit won over lawmakers in Colorado and Montana on Thursday, with each state passing constitutional carry bills in their Senate and House respectively.

Snow is flying, winter is upon us, and many hunting seasons have closed.  But small game is still open, and stands of old maples everywhere are full of barking squirrels.  Lets forgo the age-old shotgun versus rifle debate.  In fact, forget long guns in general.  Whether you spot and shoot, sit on stump, run with a dog, or stalk those tricky tree-jumpers — if you want a real challenge and a really good time — grab a rimfire handgun and hit your nearest stand of squirrel trees.  The crock-pot awaits.

It’s been said that fortune favors the prepared. Generally speaking, that’s true. Certainly luck plays a role in surviving any violent encounter, but if you are prepared for most eventualities (conceal carry permit, gun, magazine, knife, tactical pen, regular range time, et cetera) your odds of survivability improve dramatically over someone who’s simply hoping a disaster won’t occur. In a cruel twist of fate, however, it’s possible that some of the things you do in good conscience to train for an emergency could be putting your life (and those you might protect) at a greater risk than you might think.
