The 12 Golden rules for Safe Gun Handling

Wed, 11/04/2015 - 10:31

I read this over on the Evans Brothers Guns and Shooting Range Facebook page this morning. While we all know the rules, it’s always good for a reminder from time to time.

  1. Always treat the gun as loaded.
  2. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
  3. Always keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
  4. Always keep the gun unloaded until you are ready to use it.
  5. Never point the gun at anything you don’t intend to destroy.
  6. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
  7. Learn the mechanical and handling characteristics of the gun you are using.
  8. Always use proper ammunition.
  9. Be sure the barrel is clear of obstructions before loading and shooting.
  10. If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled, hold your shooting position for several seconds; then with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, carefully unload the gun.
  11. Don’t rely on the gun’s safety to keep it from firing.
  12. Be aware of your surroundings when handling guns so you don’t trip or lose your balance and accidentally point and/or fire the gun at anyone or anything.

Learning To Love Shotguns

Fri, 10/30/2015 - 12:26

“You’re standing in your bedroom doorway in your underwear in the middle of the night. At the end of a seven-yard hallway, an intruder is holding your son hostage with a knife to his throat. You have a shotgun or a pistol available. Which do you choose? Go!”

I’m on the phone with a former handgun student and good friend. She made the mistake of answering my phone call, and I haven’t even given her time to say hello. She makes a sound—an exasperated laugh of surprise—but she answers.

“Pistol,” she says.

“Why?” I ask.

“Because it’s what I’ve had the most training on.”

Having been her instructor, I know exactly what kind of training she’s had, and how much.

I asked, “At that distance, with your current skill level, do you feel confident you could make that shot on demand with your handgun?”

She hesitates, then answers, “No.”

“Would you take the shot at all?”

“Probably not. No.”

“What if I told you that, with less training, you could consistently and confidently make that shot with buckshot, from a shotgun?”

She scoffed, “I’d say, ‘Show me.’”

How To Protect Your Hearing When Shooting

Tue, 10/27/2015 - 10:44

Recently the Hearing Protection Act (HPA) was introduced to remove suppressors from the purview of the National Firearms Act (NFA). This means that citizens who exercise their Second Amendment rights no longer have to pay a tax to protect their hearing while doing so! You can read more about the Hearing Protection Act here.

“Journalism”

Mon, 10/26/2015 - 12:48

Allow me to reiterate the first paragraph from the article for those that did not catch the error:

A woman arrested for suspected drunken driving slammed her car into a crowd at Oklahoma State University’s homecoming parade Saturday, killing four people, including a two-year-old. More than 30 others were injured.

Make no doubt about it, this is a not-so-subtle attack our 2nd Amendment rights. Those at the Traverse City Record Eagle probably thought they could use this tragedy to further restrict gun rights, with the adage ‘never let a crisis go to waste.’

A Visual History of Firearms

Fri, 10/23/2015 - 12:54

For the past few months, Alex has been working with an artist to create “A Visual History of Firearms,” a really cool graphic that traces the evolution of portable guns from past to present. It features 106 hand-drawn illustrations of the most iconic, historically significant, and technologically groundbreaking firearms of all time.

What Can Stop a Bullet? A Look at Popular Guns and Kevlar Vests

Thu, 10/22/2015 - 00:10

It is important to know exactly what your bullet proof vest can protect you against. You may already know how your favorite guns match up against targets or game, but how do they match up against Kevlar? All too often Kevlar is treated as truly bullet proof; a magic fabric which can protect against bullets. However, it can only protect against certain threats and even then only if it as at the appropriate level. Bullet proof vests are tested and graded according to international standards set by the US National Institute of Justice. These protection levels outline exactly what body armor can protect you against. Below are some of the most common, popular, and famous firearms, and an explanation of what is needed to protect against each.

Mike Rowe On Guns

Tue, 10/20/2015 - 15:21

The New York Times recently ran an article on the ‘modern man’ (whatever that is), and safe to say the advice given is quite ridiculous. Mike Rowe took the opportunity to alter the statements as he saw fit.

NYT: The modern man doesn’t get hung up on his phone’s battery percentage. If it needs to run flat, so be it.
MR: A Man’s Man prefers his gas tank full, his weapon loaded, his pantry stocked, and his checkbook balanced. He also likes his phone sufficiently charged, and takes the necessary steps to accomplish that.

NYT: The modern man has no use for a gun. He doesn’t own one, and he never will.
MR: A Man’s Man owns at least one firearm. He knows how to use it, clean it, and store it properly. He understands it’s importance, and sees it for what it is – a tool that can protect him and his family.

Profound Ignorance Behind Calls to Repeal Second Amendment

Fri, 10/16/2015 - 10:26

The bodies of the Roseburg, Oregon, mass shooting victims weren’t even cold (quite literally) before Barack Obama raced to the podium demanding more gun control laws, even suggesting it was time for the U.S. government to confiscate firearms. Media outlets were immediately flooded with talkingheads aping Obama’s appeal to ignorance.
