The Second Biggest Loser in Last Night’s Virginia Elections: Gun Control

Wed, 11/03/2021 - 08:45

Seeing the Commonwealth of Virginia shift from Blue to purple-shaded-red last night was a shock to the political system. As you’d expect, the great analytical minds who look at these things pegged one reason for the loss by race-hoaxer Terry McAuliffe…racism. Because of course they did.

Never mind that Virginia parents weren’t happy about the curriculum being taught in many of their public schools. Or being branded “domestic terrorists” for daring to object.

By Morgan Marietta, University of Massachusetts Lowell

The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments today on a clear question: Does the constitutional right to possess a gun extend outside the home? The answer may alter gun regulations in many states.

The crux of the issue before the court is captured by a debate that Thomas Jefferson had with himself at the time of the founding.

Civil Liberties Watch: Congress Really Wants a Look Into Gun Buyers’ Bank Accounts

Tue, 11/02/2021 - 14:00

By Larry Keane

Gun owners beware. Certain members of Congress believe if an individual buys too many guns, too much ammunition, or too many accessories, that person is a potentially dangerous criminal or a “domestic terrorist.”

They also want banks to tell on anyone who might be buying “too much.”

U.S. Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and U.S. Reps. Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.), and Jennifer Wexton, (D-Va.) havet introduced the Gun Violence Prevention Through Financial Intelligence Act, H.R.

Things That Don’t Suck: Caldwell E-Max Power Cords

Tue, 11/02/2021 - 12:00

I don’t know about you, but I use different hearing protection for different environments. And I usually default to the lightest, least obtrusive option that gets the job done based on where I’ll be shooting. I usually double up indoors with in-the-ear plugs and good over-the-ear muffs. But when I’m outdoors, I go with something lighter, cooler, and more flexible.

I’ve been using Caldwell’s Bluetooth enabled E-Max Power Cords for weeks now and I’m a fan.

Tue, 11/02/2021 - 10:00

The NSSF’s Mark Oliva tells TTAG that . . .

Background checks for gun sales continue to be strong and steadily rising. Background checks in the fall months typically rise as hunting seasons open across the country, new firearm models are being introduced and gun buyers start to consider holiday sales.

The annual total so far of nearly 15.2 million background checks is putting 2021 on the path to being the second strongest year on record.

How Narrow Will the Supreme Court’s Second Amendment Ruling Be?

Tue, 11/02/2021 - 08:00

As the court’s docket shows, the justices first discussed the cert petition at a private conference in March, before debating it again at two additional conferences in April. In each conference, however, the conservative justices failed to produce the four votes needed to grant review. (None of the liberal justices are likely to have voted to grant the case because they almost certainly agreed with the lower court ruling upholding New York’s law).

Then, at another conference held at the end of April, the justices voted to grant the case.

Mon, 11/01/2021 - 14:00

How can a 95-year-old seasoned citizen possibly defend himself against a strapping 40-year-old career criminal who’d just smashed his way into the old man’s home in broad daylight? You probably know the answer to this one.

Trigger Review: Bushmaster DM2S Dedicated Marksman 2 Stage Trigger

Mon, 11/01/2021 - 12:00

My Parts Bin AR10’s mil spec-ish trigger certainly needed an upgrade, so when Dan said he had a new AR trigger to review, I was first in line.

In went the Bushmaster’s new DM2S Designated Marksman 2 Stage trigger. It turned out to be a solid upgrade.

The two-stage trigger is far and away the most popular version for ARs, and that seems to be for “working guns” as well as more precision rifles.

Rittenhouse Trial Gets Under Way Today With Jury Selection

Mon, 11/01/2021 - 10:00

By Scott Bauer and Michael Tarm, AP

The trial of Kyle Rittenhouse kicks off Monday with the challenging task of seating jurors who haven’t already made up their minds about the man who shot three people, killing two, during a violent night of protests last year.

Rittenhouse was 17 when he made the short trip north from his home in Illinois, just across the Wisconsin border, during protests that broke out in August 2020 after a white police officer shot Jacob Blake, a black man.

Shooting To Wound Will Increase Police Shootings, Not Reduce Them

Mon, 11/01/2021 - 08:00

“[S]hooting to incapacitate” will likely lead to more shootings, not fewer. If officers are taught that their gun is now a less-than-lethal option, they could use that gun more and simply say, “I only shot him in the leg.” The imprecision caused by the reality on the street — when adrenaline is pumping, sirens are blaring and hearts are racing — would surely cause police firing rounds at appendages to miss and strike innocent bystanders.

Sun, 10/31/2021 - 10:00

While the lawless wasteland of Chicago surged past 700 homicides for the year recently, St. Louis remains at the top of the body count heap in per capita homicides. Congrats to St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones for her fine “leadership.”

Offering more symbolism over substance for the media, the Gateway City executive held a press conference Friday. Cameras captured the sound of nearby gunfire as the mayor lamented the endemic gun gang violence in the city.
