How is it that in Texas, of all places, an accused would-be mass murderer gets to stroll out of jail with a feces-eating grin on his face a day later and then party like rock star back at home?

Sat, 10/09/2021 - 08:00

On one side is the American Civil Liberties Union and its New York state counterpart, which contend that the state law is justified to protect First Amendment rights in the public sphere. On the other side are a coalition of New York–based public defender groups who contend that the law actually gives cops a license to discriminate and harm indigent and minority New Yorkers who try to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

Yamane: Lots of America’s New Gun Owners Won’t Necessarily Want to Identify as ‘Gun Owners’

Fri, 10/08/2021 - 08:00

Many times people ask me, “Are you a golfer?” And my typical response is, “No, but I play golf.” To embrace the identity of ‘golfer’ is to take on some attributes that I really don’t want to take on. It sort of raises certain expectations for me when I get on the golf course.

In the same way, being a person who owns a gun does not automatically make someone a ‘gun owner’ in terms of their identity.

Guns For Beginners: Don’t Be ‘That Guy,’ Always Carry With a Holster

Thu, 10/07/2021 - 14:00

Holsters offer a safe, effective and utilitarian manner with which to carry your guns.  Leave the carry sans a holster to criminals, amateurs who don’t know any better and fools.

Holsters protect your gun, aid in comfortable carriage and keep your firearm in a consistent position and location on your hip.  A well-fitted holster will also prevent your gun from falling out of your waistband into the blue water of a porta-John, or the public toilet, while doing your business.

Trump Justices Could Topple Gun Control Laws as Court Prepares to Hear New York Concealed Handgun Case

Thu, 10/07/2021 - 14:00

By Eric Ruben, Southern Methodist University

The stakes in one of the most significant Second Amendment cases in U.S. history are high.

The Supreme Court’s ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, expected by mid-2022, could declare a New York state restriction on carrying concealed handguns in public places unconstitutional.

Such a ruling in favor of the plaintiffs, which include a National Rifle Association affiliate, could loosen gun regulations in many parts of the country.

Wed, 10/06/2021 - 15:00

Modern day gangsters in Chicago have graduated from carjackings and drive-by shootings to something new and exciting:  the rolling gun battle. In scenes that look like fifth-grade productions of Hollywood shoot-em-up scenes, carloads of gang bangers and thugs are shooting it out, even in upscale neighborhoods including the city’s famous Magnificent Mile.

Unlike Hollywood, these wannabe tough guys are using real guns and real bullets. While most folks will shed few tears for the participants hurt or killed in the gang violence, innocents also suffer injuries and even death.

Four Revolvers That Went To War

Wed, 10/06/2021 - 14:00

Colt and Smith & Wesson…two iconic American firearm manufacturers. These are the names that come to mind when it comes to classic Americana for pistols and revolvers. Their glory days, some would argue, were the first half of the 20th century, when they dominated the markets both stateside and across the globe.

And like many large firms at the time, when the world went to war in 1914, Big Blue and the Prancing Pony did, too.

The company has been rooted in western Massachusetts since it was founded in 1852. By Michael Tarm and Todd Richmond, AP

An Illinois man who shot three people during a protest over police brutality in Wisconsin last year was justified because the men confronted him and two of them tried to wrestle his gun away, a use-of-force expert called by the defense testified at a pretrial hearing Tuesday.

The expert, John Black, spent hours outlining the moments that led to Kyle Rittenhouse’s decisions to shoot Joseph Rosenbaum, Anthony Huber and Gaige Grosskreutz, offering a preview of the defense team’s strategy when Rittenhouse’s trial begins next month.
