The Truth About Guns

Training Tip: Beware of YouTube Operators
It’s been a minute since I’ve written anything for this here gun rag, but I’m back with what I hope will be the first installment of a regular series I’ve decided to call Stupid Gun Stories. I see so many “interesting” things at the range these days that I feel compelled to bring them up to people who don’t care, and TTAG generously decided to provide me an outlet.
A couple of months ago I had the dubious pleasure of being invited to go shooting with a fella who decided, after learning that I’d been trained byJeff Gonzales and Paul Howe along with a handful of experienced friends who shall not be named here, that I’d been “taught all wrong” and that he was therefore obligated to…help me out.

Savage Gets Into the Suppressor Business With Their New AccuCan Line
Demand for suppressors is strong. After all, who wouldn’t want all the obvious benefits of shooting more quietly? And while it will take time, the prospects for making them easier to acquire after Bruen are good over the long term. All of that no doubt figured into Savage Arms’ decision to get into the suppressor business with three new cans designed to cover pretty much all of your shooting needs.
Here’s Savage’s announcement .
Magpul’s New Lightweight, More Affordable MOE X-22 Stock for 10/22 Rifles
Magpul’s X-22 Backpacker and Hunter stocks for the Ruger 10/22 are some of the most popular aftermarket stocks for the venerable rimfire rifle. Now they’ve announced a new lightweight, more affordable version, the MOE X-22 stock.
From Magpul . . .
The MOE X-22 Stock is the ideal rimfire stock for those looking for a lightweight, budget-friendly upgrade for their Ruger 10/22-pattern rifle. We wanted to give shooters an extreme value stock that still provides several improvements over the factory stock that came with their gun.
Continued Gun Control Threats Spur 1.6 Million Gun Sold in November
The old man in the White House keeps yammering on about the need for another “assault weapons” ban. This week, Senate Democrats obliged him by introducing yet another doomed bill to do that. Last night, Chuck Schumer said he’ll bring the bill to the floor to make Republicans vote on it (we’re sure red state Dems like John Tester will be grateful for that, too). Meanwhile, gun sales last month jumped 5% over last year, posting the third highest total for November on record.
Remington: After Two Centuries, An Anti-Gun Blue State Drives Out Another Gun Maker
It’s a sad day and marked the end of a nearly two-century era in New York. Add another tally on the board for a hostile gun control Blue state in the Northeast suffocating and pushing out a storied, tradition-rich firearm manufacturer that decided enough was enough.
RemArms, the latest iteration of Remington, announced it will close all manufacturing operations in Ilion, New York, and consolidate in La Grange, Georgia, completely leaving the Empire State.
CRPA, SAF, GOA Sue LA County Sheriff Over Carry Permit Processing Delays
By Chuck Michel
CRPA filed suit against the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s office challenging the “constitutionality of (its) carry permit issuance policies and laws that make it extremely difficult, if not outright impossible or impermissibly time consuming” to get a permit to carry s firearm in public.
Ever since the announcement of the Bruen decision, CRPA has fought to bring CCW application and issuance processes in line with the new standards.

Why Would Someone Open Carry A Sub-Compact Pistol?
Michael in GA posted the following in the comment section . . .
Is it counterintuitive to open carry a sub compact pistol? I was at a restaurant for my wife’s birthday with her and her mother. A man one table over stood up and had a Smith & Wesson M&P9 Shield on his hip.
I nudged my wife and gestured with my eyes toward the gun. She looked and said, “That’s great!” I said no, it isn’t.

More NYC Bodega Owners Arming Themselves as Crime Soars in the City
The National Supermarket Association, which represents roughly 600 independent grocers, estimated a quarter of its members in the [New York City] are packing heat, compared to 10% pre-pandemic.
“You see the necessity because the city is getting out of hand with the crime rate,” said one supermarket owner, who purchased a 9mm SIG Sauer handgun two months ago, after thieves cut a hole in the roof of his Ridgewood, Queens, store to steal $3,000 and smash up the registers and camera system.
Gear Review: Desert Tech Trek-22 Bullpup Chassis
Desert Tech is well known for making some of the best bullpup center-fire semi-autos and bolt action rifles on the market. In an interesting turn for the company that seems to reinvent everything, Desert Tech didn’t make a bullpup rimfire gun. Instead, they came up with the Trek-22, a simple clamshell chassis solution for America’s favorite rimfire rifle, the Ruger 10/22.
Compared to one of my basic Ruger 10/22 carbines, the Trek-22 dramatically shortens the overall length of the gun.

Anti-Gunners Paint Themselves Into a Corner Refusing 3D-Printed Guns at ‘Buyback’
A gun control group in New Mexico recently announced yet another gun “buyback” event. This time, though, there’s a twist: no 3D-printed guns are allowed. We’ve seen this before, but this time the group managed to paint themselves into a corner when they refused to respond to some very simple questions about the policy
The biggest one: Why not buy 3D-printed “ghost guns” from the public? The main reason they won’t answer that question is obvious.
Lott: With More Guns and More People Carrying, the Odds Are Someone Near You is Packing
Overall, [the Crime Prevention Research Center’s John R. Lott] said, there are 21.8 million permits issued. That’s a decrease of 0.5% from last year.
But that’s not bad news for proponents of the Second Amendment and concealed carry laws.
Lott explained that the leveling off of permits is likely due to the surge in states that now allow citizens to carry their handguns without a permit.
Remember: He’s Gonna Find Out Who’s Naughty or Nice
[ED: Just FYI, Jeremy wore this year’s Magpul Christmas sweater to an event here in Austin on Thursday and word is he’s definitely on Santa’s good list as a result.]

Whitmer Response: Michigan Town Creates its Own Militia to Prevent New Confiscation Law From Being Enforced
A town in Michigan has dubbed itself a “Second Amendment Sanctuary” and founded a militia over gun control laws being passed in the state.
Holton Township passed the resolution in response to a Michigan red flag law that would allow courts to remove weapons from those considered to be an extreme risk. According to town leaders, the move is in response to what they believe is an infringement on the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Seattle’s New Homicide Record Shows the Utter Failure of Gun Control Laws
The City of Seattle—home to a billionaire-backed gun prohibition lobbying group which bankrolled two gun control initiatives that have been dismal failures—hit a new homicide record this week, ironically with the death of a June stabbing victim, and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said the time has come to repeal the laws that only impact law-abiding citizens and take a new course against criminals.
Seattle has now posted 70 murders, and there is still one full month remaining for the body count to rise even more.
HELL NO: UN Climate Confab Pushes Anti-Hunting, Anti-Meat Eating Agenda
Leaders of the world’s developed and undeveloped countries are gathering in Dubai for the 28th United Nations Convention of Parties (COP28) on “climate action.” It’s a global gathering for privileged leaders to fly their private jets around the world — including Vice President Kamala Harris and U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry — to meet and talk about “climate science.”
But anti-hunting and animal rights activists are piling on the climate agenda this year with major efforts to force developed countries to cut back on the burgers and steaks.
Senators Wrap Yet Another ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban Bill in a Slightly Different Package for the Holidays
We’ve lost count of how many attempts there have been to enact another federal “assault weapons” ban since the Clinton-era gun control law sunsetted in 2004. A new election year version that was introduced yesterday is just as doomed as those prior iterations, but it takes a slightly different approach than its predecessors.
Maine’s Angus King and New Mexico’s Martin Heinrich are the lead sponsors of the cleverly monikered Gas-Operated Semiautomatic Firearm Exclusion (GOSAFE) bill.
Lott: Eliminating ‘Gun-Free’ Zones Would Reduce Mass Shootings and Saves Lives
It isn’t surprising that people will miss cases or occasionally misidentify them, though the sheer number of missing cases involving defensive gun uses is startling. The FBI was unwilling to change its figures when I pointed out my findings when I was at the Department of Justice or earlier.
My organization, the Crime Prevention Research Center, has continued this work and spent only a few thousand dollars (compared to millions spent by the FBI) and found an additional 138 cases, plus five more that were misclassified.
Extar Announces the New US-Made Extar EP9 Pistol Caliber Carbine
From Extar USA . . .
Firearm innovator Extar USA has evolved the popular EP9 platform into a carbine, and not simply given it a longer barrel. Demonstrating once again engineering prowess and a genuine care for customer interests, the EP9 Carbine accomplishes a weight and recoil combination rarely achieved.
Unlike so many other large-format pistol and carbine pairings on the market, Extar has taken the time to recalculate and reformulate bolt mass and spring rate for the increased back pressure longer barrels create.
