Speed shooting in Cowboy Action

Thu, 04/17/2014 - 09:09

This is nothing new, but for those who don’t know, Cowboy Action is a competition similar to 3gun except they use old styled firearms. They use a revolver, shotgun and rifle. However they are all manually operated. Single action revolvers are used for the pistols. Side by side, pump (hammered) or lever action shotguns and lever action rifles are used.

A Country Wide Water Gun Fight

Thu, 04/17/2014 - 06:08

Thailand has just finished celebrating the Songkran festival. This centuries old festival began with the tradition of sprinkling blessed water upon elders and family members to bring them good luck. Today its celebrated with a country wide water fight. A reader emailed us photos he took yesterday. I especially like the photo of the bar with plastic covering the walls and the cashier.

Meopta MeoPro HD 80 Spotting Scope

Wed, 04/16/2014 - 15:22

New from Meopta USA is the MeoPro HD 80 Spotting Scope. It is a premium low light spotting scope with a large 80mm objective lens made from fluoride glass (an expensive type of glass that prevents chromatic aberrations). It has the same basic design as the Meopta MeoStar S2 but lacks the ED elements (even more expensive glass), and has an integrated 20-60x eyepiece instead of an interchangeable piece, significantly decreasing the price. Using the MeoPix adapters, iPhone 4, iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4 phones can be attached to the eye piece to take photos. The MeoPro HD 80 has a MSRP of $1,724.99.

The Most Beautiful Guns I have Seen: Two Bespoke Le Page Shotguns up for Auction

Wed, 04/16/2014 - 14:11

While we have come so far with modern manufacturing, it would seem that we have lost many of the old skills. Rock Island Auction company is soon to offer two two Le Page shotguns that showcase the true art of gun-making from the 1800′s. There are precious few people left who can craft such remarkable weapons.

Glock 42 Magazine Extension

Wed, 04/16/2014 - 12:01

A magazine extension for the Glock 42 is now available from Corps Technology Group.  The $10.95 part replaces the standard floor plate of a 42 magazine allowing the shooter to get more hand on the pistol.  The extension does not alter the capacity of the magazine.

How do you celebrate Easter?

Wed, 04/16/2014 - 09:09

22Plinkster has done some interesting trick shots with .22LR. In this recent video, he shoots an egg from 100yds off hand, open sights with a 22LR tracer. One shot.

I find this video amusing because just last week, two of my online friends set a challenge for all three of us. Offhand shoot an egg from 100 yds. No limit on the gun used. Then this video pops up and blows us out of the water haha.

I used plastic Easter eggs filled with flour. So I could see if I hit them. I was unable to hit them off hand and used a table. So I failed the challenge but it was fun trying. I need to up my skills. Do you set challenges for yourself?

Taiwan 9mm MSR Submachine Gun Prototype

Wed, 04/16/2014 - 06:08

Last year we published photos of the service rifle being developed by the Taiwanese military. According to the Youtube video embedded below they are also developing a 9mm submachine gun. The submachine gun is patterned after the rifle and probably shares a number of common parts. It has a folding buttstock (someone on the video says the stock has been 3D printed and they are testing different designs), ambidextrous controls and a full length top rail. The barrel looks to be about 7″ in length.

The Dark Side of Training

Tue, 04/15/2014 - 19:33

This is an interesting video. I don’t know this group. Some of the things they do seem a bit extreme. There are some intriguing aspects that I find could be fun to try. Like the moving targets on poles. It presents a somewhat more dynamic aspect to one’s practice. Rather than having stationary targets or a swinging target, here you can simulate people in your way, safely. The only other way you could simulate this is with force on force and with airsoft or simunition. The ice plunge is another interesting challenge. I recall an episode of the Mythbusters where they tested pain tolerance and used hands submerged in ice to test pain thresholds. So there are multiple aspects to that challenge. Pain in the hands on top of the wetness and possible shivering of the hands, while trying to manipulate a hand gun.
If you watch near the end, the shooter shoots into the ground. It reminds me of the Russian technique we saw in the Larry Vicker’s confidence video. It is use

PK Machine Gun Predator Ammo Backpack

Tue, 04/15/2014 - 16:01

A Russian gun enthusiast has developed a Predator-style ammunition feeder backpack that holds 7.62x54mmR cartridges for the PK Machine gun. If my understanding of the Google-translation of the Russia text is correct, the backpack, feeding mechanism, ammo box and 450 rounds of 7.62x54mm weigh a total of 33.2 lbs (15.1 kg). The backpack has been designed to give the operator maximum mobility. The gun can be fired offhand or prone and the feeding mechanism reaches far enough for the machine gun’s flash hider to rest on the ground.

When I initially covered BulletSafe’s children’s backpack panel, I wasn’t sure if I thought it was a good idea. TFB readers had mixed emotions as well. I had an opportunity to test a panel and filmed the results.

Franklin Armory CSW

Tue, 04/15/2014 - 14:11

The folks at Franklin Armory are now selling a firearm called the CSW.  The gun uses many of the same bits and pieces of a standard AR-15, but does not have a pistol grip or shoulder stock.  Instead, the firearm uses a spade grip, similar to what can be found on the M2 machine gun.  Independent triggers are located on each grip.

According to Franklin Armory, the gun is not classified as an “assault weapon” under any known law.  Consequently, it legally eliminates the need for a Bullet Button in California.

A kit will also be available for shooters to convert an AR-15 to the CSW.

Thanks to Cymond for the tip.

The 9mm Fixed? The Straight-Walled 9mm Automatic

Tue, 04/15/2014 - 12:01

If you ever want to get a shooter’s attention, start an article with the following statement: “The 9mm Luger cartridge is flawed.”

At least, it sure had mine. Shooting Times has published a detailed dive and analysis by Brad Miller, Ph.D. on the 9mm Luger and the proposed modern solution, the 9mm Automatic cartridge. The good Dr. exhaustively reviews the history of the 9mm and focuses on what he contends is the major problem of the cartridge: its taper.

Gear Review: NPE Holster & Magazine Pouch

Mon, 04/14/2014 - 19:33

One Source Tactical is selling a minimalist, yet fantastic minimalist holster system dubbed “The NPE” for “Non-Permissible environment”. The holster made by TSD Combat Systems is available for a variety of different handguns, and a matching magazine holder is also available. Both are priced at $29.99.

I know I hate when I see 5,000 word reviews on the merits of a $30 piece of gear, so lets make this easy.

As stated, the NPE system takes a minimalist approach. You get a molded bit of holster and some paracord, which you tie as you see fit:

Rest in Peace Barry

Mon, 04/14/2014 - 18:47

I got word earlier today that Barry of Iraqveteran8888, one of the best gun-related YouTube channels out there has passed away. I always enjoyed watching videos where he taught young ones like me about things like the lost art of cut shotgun shells, or when he recited a poem about his time working for RPB building select fire M10 submachine guns.

Rest in peace Barry, and my best wishes go out to his friends and family.
