One of the things I’m interested in is building up a post-SHTF reference library over time. There are a lot of good posts on this that Google turns up, but here on AllOutdoor I’d like to take it a bit slower and look at one book at a time. I’d also like to solicit suggestions from the audience, so any time you see one of these posts please drop in and offer any other suggestions or alternatives.

Flashoholics were poring over pictures of SHOT 2015 on the various interweb fora, and at the FourSevens booth was a curious looking light–squat and more technical looking than the average FourSevens light. There were a pair in a few fuzzy pictures–one was black and the other was a full on blinged out specimen. They were not really discussed, except on a few back channels and over private message. There was no press release or information, just a few grainy photos. In short, they were the Bigfoot of the flashlight world.

Trail cameras have been the biggest white-tailed deer hunting buzz for many years now. It seems every hunter uses them. However, the biggest fallacy of using these cameras is putting too much reliance on photos of bucks leading to the actual harvest of that deer. There is a huge gap between the two.

After 15 years and millions of dollars spent the State of Maryland has abandoned its massive “ballistic fingerprinting” effort.

This critter was taken a few years back, but it’s still notable.

Coos County, OR – The voters in Coos County are unhappy with state and federal gun laws, and have reportedly chosen to do something about it. It’s unclear whether the recent county ordinance will actually have teeth – and whether it will ever be exercised.

The guys at TFB just wrote a great article about what guns are popular with special forces that are not AR-15s. They limited this list to guns that serve as a primary weapon, not a secondary/side arm.

AR rifles or MSRs (Modern Sporting Rifles) are well known for the flexibility of their platforms. These rifles are the most adaptable to the widest range of factory and aftermarket accessories of any gun design ever. An AR owner can virtually customize their own rifle to add dozens of features to suit their own shooting needs, requirements and wants. The list is endless.

The high-quality “leasure” products of a company named “Over Under” have come on strong in recent years.

According to the FBI’s background check stats, October marked the sixth straight month of record gun sales. The thing is, there’s no panic going on out there, like there was post-Obama or post-Sandy Hook, or like there will be if Hillary takes the White House next year. No, AR-15 prices are still quite soft, and most types of guns and ammo are widely available.

A recent reddit post made me want to reach through my screen and shake the author. This particular issue comes up so often in survival circles, and it drives me batty:

If you are an AR shooter, then you probably are very familiar with the AR accessory designer and manufacturer Magpul or actually Magpul Industries Corporation. Though perhaps an odd name for a company dedicated to producing a comprehensive product line of goodies for customizing your AR platform rifle, the name really comes from one of their foundational products.

Concealed carry modes seem to be concentrated on IWB or OWB carry formats. I don’t want any pistol carried inside my pants and am not too crazy about many of the outside the waistband holsters either. Though I know many in law enforcement or other security positions that require such carry, I note that many of them complain about the comfort factors of carrying concealed.

Anything in deer timber that inhibits animal passage has the potential to concentrate where whitetails walk, thus making them vulnerable to hunters.  A lake or pond shore is just such a barrier, and it can offer outstanding tree stand hunting spots for observant sportsmen.

Now’s the time to upgrade your deer hunting rifle. Seasons are underway, and great buys for firearms and accessories are available everywhere.
