Deer Hunting Hot Spot: Field Corners With Old Farm Access Roads

Tue, 10/27/2015 - 18:08

Deer, including huge bucks, often walk into fields using old farm roads and lanes.  This is especially true where roads lead into creek-bottom, heavy-timber bedding areas.  Even if deer don’t walk right in the road access, there often are enough side trails near such roads, that setting a stand to hunt the roadway makes sense.

Quick Look: Primary Arms 1-8x FFP scope

Mon, 10/26/2015 - 16:13

Up to now, high quality 1-8x scopes have been extremely expensive. For example, Leupold Mark 8 CQBSS first focal plane scope, retails for about $3K. That’s about what Trijicon’s excellent 1-6x FFP VCOG runs as well. At lower prices, either scalable reticle or higher end magnification or optical quality usually go away. But there’s nothing usual about this Primary Arms 1-8×24 FFP scope. Designed from the ground up to be their flagship option, the first entry into the truly high end sighting, this optic is also the first for PA to be produced in Japan alongside of other premium brands.

Is there an Ideal Hunting Scope Power?

Mon, 10/26/2015 - 16:13

Studying a riflescope catalog will only make you dizzy. The same for an optics web site. There are just so many brands, so many types of scopes, features, finishes, and other options that it can get confusing. The costs of good optics have also skyrocketed these past few years. Truly you get what you pay for, but some of the top end scopes cost more than my first car.

Heavy Duty SHTF Battle Rifles

Thu, 10/22/2015 - 16:36

Sometimes there is a real need for more firepower. As popular as the AR-15 in .223/5.56 is with survivalists and preppers, a good argument can be made for having a prep rifle delivering more target impact at long ranges. This means the .308/7.62 in a heavier platform than the M4 type ARs that are so prolific these days.

Crosshairs or Red Dots for MSRs?

Wed, 10/21/2015 - 19:19

A healthy debate continues over the selection of an optical option for AR-type rifles. Really this does not have to be a debate, as one type of scope is not really better than the other, it just depends on the purpose and use of the weapon. And I just throw out the “AR” rifle as a sort of generic reference to defensive type rifles including ARs, AKs, FN-FALs, M1As and any such rifle in this category.

When TSHTF, Bring on the “Party Favors”

Wed, 10/21/2015 - 19:18

The conservative radio show moderator Kim Wade had a caller phone in this week discussing all the pre-SHTF evidence as it develops. In the process of this guy detailing this government action or that targeting the demise of America, much of it only believed by “paranoid” preppers, he made the statement that the “Party” was coming.
