Ask Writing Huntress: A guide to guided hunts
Dear Writing Huntress,
...
Shotgun Life Women: Shooting tips from Deborah McKown
Confidence is a big part of successful wing and clays shooting. Believing you can actually hit the target plays a deciding role in the outcome. With that in mind, one of the best ways to boost your confidence is with your call. When you call “pull,” say it with conviction. Don’t call “pull” as though you’re asking permission; instead it puts your squad on notice that you intend to obliterate the target. Your call doesn’t necessarily have to be loud, but it should be authoritative. In addition to serving as a request for the target, “pull” functions as your own internal trigger to focus on the target, maintain the line of the target and execute the shot. “Pull” starts the entire process of completing an effective shot.
...Tips and techniques on how to load a shotgun during competition
When I first started shooting 3-Gun, I thought that it would be fairly easy for me to make the transition. I already shot pistol and competed in Cowboy Action Shooting, so I had the basics down of using multiple guns during competitions. In some ways, the transition was OK, but in other ways I had totally misunderstood the challenges. My biggest underestimation ended up being shotgun loading. While the concept is the same, loading a pump-action shotgun with only 2 rounds at a time and loading a semi auto for 3-Gun are MUCH further apart than I thought. With a couple of years 3-Gun under my belt, here a few tips and techniques I’ve learned about shotgun loading.

Review: Leatherman rail, pump and cam PocketTools
Like many English words, such as Kleenex (for tissue) or Band-Aid (for an adhesive bandage), Leatherman has become the common term for a multitool. As a child, being someone who didn’t own a Leatherman tool, I envied my cousin Karrie, who is 7 years younger than me. She was like a magician. Just as someone involved in tinkering would begin to say, “Hey, does anyone have a …”or, “Would someone get me a …”her Leatherman multi-tool would seem to appear in her hand, out of thin air. Without skipping a beat, she would mysteriously pass it to the person in need. Was she a mind reader? A future David Copperfield? No, just a Girl Scout and woman of the outdoors — always prepared.

...7 ways children can have fun at the shooting range
When children begin shooting, traditional bull’s-eye targets are perfect for working on safety skills. They’re also good for zeroing your rifle before hunting or competitions. However, if children continually shoot the same bull’s-eye target, they can become tired, exhausted or bored. As the boredom sets in, the effort that goes into shooting can deteriorate. In our case we have youth competitors, i.e. LG and friends, who train on a regular basis. Sometimes they want, or rather need, to have fun at the range. That’s when it’s time to introduce other types of targets to change things up, so children have fun at the range.

...What to know before switching hunting dog breeds
So, you want to switch dog breeds? Maybe you’re doing more upland hunting than waterfowling and are looking at pointing breeds; maybe you’re moving from Georgia to Alaska and you’re worried about the cold; or, maybe you just want to try something new. Every hunting breed has its perfect day afield. If you happen to be behind an English setter on point, watch a German shorthaired pointer cover ground all day, or see a Chesapeake Bay retriever battle a cold-water tide to retrieve a sea duck, you may be tempted to think, this is the dog for me! But, wait.

ScopeSlicker and SpudzPro — Gear for helping keep your scope spot-on
As a hunter, I have invested a significant amount of money into my rifles and riflescopes. I protect my investments the best I am able, in order to help make certain they are ready to perform when I am afield. Sometimes, however, the weather has other ideas and interferes with the clarity of my scope, especially here in the Pacific Northwest where I battle rain, snow and fog on a regular basis. Fortunately, I recently discovered the ScopeSlicker and SpudzPro, both by Alpine Innovations. Each of these small items helps in keeping my scope clean, clear and spot-on.
