The idea of duck hunting etiquette may seem like the gloved version of a gloves-off sport. But, really, it’s as simple as being safe and sporting. The so-called unwritten code is nothing secret, and is basically a way of enhancing enjoyment for all involved.

Between harvesting potatoes, freezing and drying vegetables and herbs from the garden, and getting my daughter ready for the upcoming back-to-school routine coming our way in just a few weeks, I’ve been making sure that archery practice doesn’t get pushed aside. With the countdown on to bow season this fall — I can take all the practice I can get!

I love fall camping.  Everything about it and once Labor Day hits and hunting season gets here I am in seventh heaven.

With the fall hunting seasons upon us, here are some tips that every hunter should keep in mind.

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) recently appointed Becky Humphries its new chief conservation officer.

Carrie Z. continues her series on women of The WON and interviews Lisa Barron, columnist at the Women’s Outdoor News and licensed jackalope hunter. Lisa and Carrie discuss jackalope hunting, being “Deer Abbey” and how being 4’10″ is totally awesome.

Each year, LG and I hope to draw coveted Colorado Mule Deer hunting licenses. These gorgeous animals sport gray coats with black markings on their foreheads and white around their faces. The bucks boast antlers that typically grow up and out, branching toward the sky. In some states, it can take years to draw a license to hunt one. When we are lucky enough to draw the hunting license, LG and I search for the elusive “Monster Muley.”

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will offer a backpacking workshop for women the weekend of Nov. 7-9. Part of the DNR’s Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program, the workshop is designed for women who have previous backpacking experience or training and would like to expand on their skills and abilities.

The outdoor industry is extremely fortunate to have a female role model like Gina Brunson, co-host of Addicted to the Outdoors and Hawke Sport Optics, passing on the traditions we so vehemently hold on to. After speaking with Gina in a recent phone interview, I hung up the phone feeling both challenged and revived. Challenged in the perspective of giving back to the industry even just a portion of the passion Gina has for the outdoors and her family. Revived in my quest to pass on our hunting and shooting traditions.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA – Tycoon Tackle, Inc. announced the addition of Erin Phelan to the company’s Pro-Staff. Erin Phelan is the Assistant Executive Director of the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum (CFFCM) in Livingston Manor, New York, located on the Willowemoc River—the cradle of fly-fishing in America. Working at the Center has given her the ability to be at the center of the sport and she likes to say that she gets to work and play in fly-fishing.  She has taught fly-fishing, fly-tying, and entomology programs at the CFFCM and for the past ten years. Erin has served on the board and been an instructor for the New York State Brotherhood of the Jungle Cock (NYS BOJC) for the past five years.
