SMYRNA, GA –Team GLOCK Captain KC Eusebio and Tori Nonaka competed in the last remaining Area Championships. They continue to ramp up for the USPSA Nationals that will be held September 24-28, 2014, in St George, UT.

Last year’s deer season opened my eyes to a new goal — coyote hunting. While leaning against the base of a tree, looking down a hill, I caught slight movement. Suddenly, a red fox trotted past on the trail. Mesmerized by its bright red coat, I was caught me off guard when soon after the fox disappeared, a coyote stalked past on its trail. That is when I decided I wanted to hunt these predators.

I’ll be hunting from two, possibly three, tree stand locations on our property this October. Based on Bryce Towsley’s advice on scent control, I know I need to switch locations throughout the season so the scent has a chance to neutralize. In fact, he mentioned that the first day you hunt in a tree stand is usually the most successful (due to scent control, not necessarily buck advantage).

My first yoga class didn’t teach me anything except that downward facing dog may be one of the reasons I’m a biped. It wasn’t until a friend talked me into another yoga class that I connected with an instructor. He roamed the classroom speaking about “beginner’s mind.” The idea is that no matter if we have done something for 20 or 30 years, it’s the effort to achieve the result that has value.

TeamWON competed in the World Championship Squirrel Cook-Off in Bentonville, Ark., on Sat., Sept. 13. Columnist Marti Davis, Jackie Thompson (our graphic designer) and I decided to “showcase” squirrel by smoking it, and then serving it 2 ways: on a bed of exquisite lettuce, with pine nuts, gorgonzola and a light citrus-based dressing and also, as a Hawaiian slider, with Jicama slaw. We lost.

Ask most anglers where they first learned to fish, and the response will likely include a nostalgic description of small ponds that played important parts in their lives and ensuing love of the sport. For me, it was small waterways on Grand Lake St. Marys in Ohio, where Grandpa taught me how to fish for bluegill, crappie, perch and catfish. These pond-dwelling fish are still fun to catch today, but the tactics for landing them have improved with tackle, technology and experience.

Elyria, Ohio — The head coach of the Bethel University Wildcat Bass Team, Garry Mason, has made a scholarship offer to The Outdoor Option co-host Shannon Reaser. The scholarship is for four years, and begins in the Fall of 2015.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is offering a number learn-to- hunt workshops and free youth pheasant hunts this month at E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area north of Corvallis.

Squirrel hunting can be one of those “back to basics” hunts, and also a great way to start a young hunter in the field. It’s also a great way to sharpen experienced hunters’ woodsmanship for the upcoming big game seasons. It’s simply the hunter, her preferred firearm and a pocketful of shells.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites women of all ages to a free trout fishing event at Maramec Spring Park on Saturday, Sept. 13. Fishing will start at 7:30 a.m. and continue until 7:15 p.m. There is no fishing license or daily trout tag required for women during this free event. A special area of the spring branch will be roped off for use by female anglers only.

Raleigh, NC – Linda Pearsall, a life-long conservationist and architect of partnerships benefiting wildlife, on Aug. 28 received the Thomas L. Quay Wildlife Diversity Award, one of the most prestigious awards given by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.

The dog days of summer are about to be a distant memory as we transition into fall. Here in the Pacific Northwest, where we are known for our very wet weather; the pending season change means rainy days are on the horizon. This does not mean my days of enjoying the outdoors are coming to an end, however. With proper gear, and a positive attitude, I refuse to let a few raindrops keep me indoors.

Women often hunt with men, and let’s face it … they’re human and sometimes make mistakes when they hunt with us. In fact, Stephanie Mallory and I listed 12 mistakes that men make when they’re out there in the woods or fields with us. Steph and I write blogs and features for Realtree, and we decided to ask women hunters about some of the errors they’ve seen men make that affect women hunters. We think you’ll recognize a few, and perhaps, add a few more to the list?

TENSAS PARISH, La., September 4, 2014 — It was a Sunday afternoon just over a week ago when 13-year-old Sarah Grace Tellifero was enjoying the last days of summer with three friends, swimming near a boathouse on a local lake. Sadly, when Sarah went to grab a boarding ladder on a pontoon boat to climb out of the water, she was electrocuted. A 17-year old was also shocked but survived. Tensas Parish Sheriff Ricky Jones told reporters that the accident looked as if it had been caused by a boat lift that had shorted out and electrified the pontoon boat’s ladder. Other swimmers in the same area had previously reported feeling a tingling sensation when jumping into the water.
