Felon tries 2nd Amendment Defense
A Springfield felon facing new gun charges is asserting as his defense a new voter-approved constitutional amendment that reinforced the right to bear arms in Missouri.
The man is asking for his weapons charges to be dropped because he says the recently passed statewide amendment gives him a right to own guns, even though he’s a felon.
David L. Thomas, 63, is charged in Greene County with five counts of unlawful possession of a firearm on the basis that he was previously convicted of felonies.
Earlier this month, Thomas, through his public defender Dewayne Perry, filed a motion to have the charges dropped, based on the passage in August of Amendment 5.
He cited language in the amendment that says “nothing in this section shall be construed to prevent the general assembly from enacting general laws which limit the rights of convicted violent felons.” The motion emphasizes the inclusion of the word “violent.”
Thomas’ defense is latching on to that language to argue the legislature cannot pass laws to restrict the rights of non-violent felons.
Thomas’ felony convictions were for driving while intoxicated and driving while revoked. He says those crimes cannot be considered violent.
Teachers might get guns in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania is a blue state, but this is the kind of red state stuff I love:
Guns have become a very controversial subject in American politics recently and, while some lawmakers are trying to make it more difficult for a person to acquire a firearm, others are trying to make it easier on legal gun owners who wish to carry their firearms into places where guns are currently outlawed. Among the pro-gun politicians are Republican lawmakers in the state of Pennsylvania who are trying to
Why we pay NRA dues
You ever wonder where your NRA contributions go? Wonder no more:
(WASHINGTON) — The National Rifle Association is poised to spend millions supporting Republican Senate candidates with new ad campaigns launching Wednesday in Arkansas, Colorado, and North Carolina.
The new ad blitz, which will total over $4 million spread across the three states, is the latest in the influential gun lobby’s efforts to influence the midterm elections. The NRA is set to spend $1.4 million in the Arkansas Senate race in a new ad campaign promoting Republican Rep. Tom Cotton, NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam confirmed to ABC News.
The 30-second pro-Cotton spot will start airing Wednesday in Little Rock and Jonesboro and is set to run for at least four weeks.
“Our Second Amendment rights are under attack by the Obama administration. That’s why we need leaders like Tom Cotton in the U.S. Senate to fight back for us,” a narrator says in the ad.
“Tom Cotton protected your rights in Congress and abroad as a combat veteran. In the Senate, Cotton will stand up to President Obama’s extreme gun control agenda, and that’s why the NRA is proud to support Tom Cotton for the United States Senate,” the narration continues.
The NRA announced its endorsement of Cotton last week. But just...
Bullied Boy Brings Gun to School in Chicago
Chicago has the toughest gun laws, here’s how they “work.”
A 12-year-old boy told authorities he brought an unloaded handgun to his South Side elementary school because he was being bullied, police said.
A security officer found the .38-caliber Special after the boy showed the gun to another student and then placed it into the backpack of a third student Monday morning at Schmid Elementary School, 9755 S. Greenwood Ave., according to a police report.
That student reported it to school officials.
The boy told police he carried the gun into school in his book bag “because he was being bullied by another student at the school,” the report said.
The five-shot gun had a 2.5-inch barrel. Its serial number was defaced.
The boy, from the South Side, was arrested at 12:45 p.m. and taken to the Calumet District police station where he was cited in a juvenile petition with unlawful use of a weapon, police said. His mother was notified.
The police report said the boy has no gang affiliation.

In Gifford’s world, dating women could forfeit your 2nd Amendment rights:

The problem with conspiracy theories is they can’t be proven, thus those seeking political office should avoid them:
British newspaper confuses shotgun with automatic weapon
Here’s their picture and caption:
Cleared by whom? The newspaper? Nope, by the Advertising Standards Authority. You see, England unlike America doesn’t have freedom, if you advertise in the UK, you have to get the government thugs to approve your ad. In this case, the ad was approved because it ran at 9:50pm, you know, child-free time, because the kids that are playing Call of Duty can’t handle seeing a chimp with a gun. It’s for their protection, they say. Wussy-ass country, I say.
Maine hosts “Becoming an Outdoors-Woman”
Maine may be a blue state, but they still need people to get hunting licenses so this program makes sense:

Act Party fights for Shoopkeeper’s Gun Rights
I don’t know much about New Zealand politics, if you’re a Kiwi, please let me know if the Act Party is a third party or a major party.
The Act Party wants shopkeepers to have the option of carrying a gun in their shop to defend themselves.
Leader Jamie Whyte says shopkeepers, especially in Auckland, are “being subjected to increasing violent robbery” and Act will strengthen their rights to defend themselves.
He says criminals are “well aware that shop keepers are defenceless and are taking advantage of this in brutal robberies”.
“What Act proposes here should reassure the shopkeepers of New Zealand. Act says it will not be illegal for a shopkeeper to keep a weapon in their own shop.
“Shopkeepers will enjoy the presumption that the right to defend themselves is paramount and be reassured by the law requiring any decision of the police to prosecute to be automatically reviewed by the Solicitor General before proceeding,” Mr Whyte said.
He says the “onus of proof” will be on the police to prove whatever action taken in self defense was not justified.
Act would would also make the police and the Solicitor-General subject to a specific public interest test.<...
The Second Amendment isn’t aged-restricted
The left supports abortion is a lifestyle choice, a private matter between a woman and her doctor. Yet a few suicides at gun ranges is driven them bonkers. Consider this editorial from Ronald Pilling, secretary of The Jesse Klump Memorial Fund Inc. Email him at weremember@jessespaddle.org.
The dialogue generated by the accidental shooting death of a firearms instructor in Arizona by a 9-year old girl reveals one of several tragedies that can happen when weapons are placed in the hands of the emotionally immature or mentally challenged. Even in the presence of trained professionals — settings that value safety above all — tragedy can result.
On a single Saturday in January 2013, five persons were accidentally shot at firing ranges or gun shows in three states. In neither venue is a background check required for admission, rent or fire a weapon.
