How Do You Carry on Your Motorcycle, Ben?
Scott in Texas sends in today’s Q&A voicemail asking about carrying a handgun on a motorcycle. I don’t have a motorcycle, but Ben brings up a couple things in this episode: Ben carries in the Appendix position. It’s not the most comfortable thing ever, but it puts the gun in a good place. You need […]

Do You Setup your Carry Guns Similar to Your Competition Guns?
Nick from Practically Tactical sends in today’s Q&A voicemail asking if we setup our concealed carry pistol like our competition guns. It’s funny, I thought my answer to this was that I don’t but then I looked at my guns. Both have similar sights, the same backstrap, and the same magazine and slide releases. Here’s […]

Little Things that Make a Good Match – 172
The difference between a really good match, and an average match isn’t a lot of super crazy, hard to do things. It’s simple really, and in this episode we talk about a few of the things that set some matches apart from others. Matches should have clearly labelled safe areas. It doesn’t matter if the […]

Want to shoot your first match? How about this weekend?
This weekend I’ll be shooting the IDPA match at H2O Fowl Farms in Dunn, NC. If you’d like to come out and shoot your first match, I’ll be happy to show you the ropes. I used to do this sort of thing a lot more often, and I’m going to try doing it more in […]

Range Officers Playing Fast and Loose with Range Commands?
Jeremiah in Utah was disqualified from an IDPA match recently because he thought he heard the Range Officer tell him to load and make ready when he really didn’t. Jeremiah said that the RO’s on his squad had been fast and loose with range commands all day, and he thought he heard the command to […]

What’s the difference between a section points match and a section championship?
Samuel in Minnesota sends in today’s Q&A voicemail asking about the difference between a “section points match” and a “section championship” in USPSA. We searched the USPSA rulebook, and didn’t find anything about a section points match, but we suspect we know what’s up. It sounds like there is some sort of a points series […]

Why not “bullets backward” magazine pouches?
Fred in Florida sends in today’s Q&A voicemail. He shot his first IDPA match recently and before the last state the Safety Officer noticed that his magazines were in the mag pouches with the bullets facing backwards. The SO told him that it was wrong, and a bad habit. We’re not sure that it’s wrong […]

Why do USPSA targets have B and C Zones if they’re scored the same?
Gerrit in Wake Forest send in today’s Q&A voicemail asking about why USPSA Metric targets have B and C scoring zones when they are both scored the same. Here’s a USPSA metric target that I colored in the perforations with a sharpie. You’ll notice the B zone in the head of the target, and the […]

Shooting IDPA with a Hi-Point
Sometimes I make posts on the Triangle Tactical Facebook Page without thinking about what I’m saying: So, I did it, and honestly, it wasn’t as terrible as I was expecting, but that’s not really saying much. I didn’t use a nylon holster though, I ended up taking an old kydex Glock 19 holster that I’d […]

Burnout = Too Much Effort + Not Enough Pay Value
This weeks episode is sort of a companion from this blog post that Ben wrote last week. You should go read it, it’s really good. We’ve both seen good shooters, and shooters who have the potential to be good fall out of the sport due to burnout over the years. It’s probably helpful to know […]

Carolina Guns and Gear USPSA Match Promo Video
This is cool as heck. I remember the drone flying around while we were shooting, but I guess I forgot about it. I know there are a few podcast listeners and friends of the show in the video, and there’s a few seconds of me shooting at 2:07. Want to know more? Here’s my primer […]

Why Don’t You Guys Recommend GSSF for New Shooters?
Brian in Florida sends in today’s Q&A voicemail and asks why he hasn’t heard us recommend GSSF as a place for new shooters to get started. The answer is really fourfold. We’ve never shoot GSSF, because there isn’t really much of it around here. It’s kind of expensive for your first match. You have to […]

Should I buy a new gun before my first match?
Kory in Texas sends in today’s Q&A podcast voicemail asking if he should buy a new gun before shooting his first match. He currently has a Glock 19 Gen4, and is looking at either a Glock 34, M&P Pro, or a Walther PPQ 5″. He should go shoot with the Glock 19, because it’s plenty […]

Federal Getting in on the Polymer Coated Bullet Bandwagon
This is interesting, and I think overdue. I’ve been shooting coated Blue Bullets for a couple years now, and they really don’t have a downside over using plated or FMJ bullets. Really interesting to see a big dog ammo manufacturer getting in on this.

Just Give Them Your Keys/Wallet/Money
A common thing that I hear people who don’t carry a gun say is that you should just give the bad guy your keys, or money or whatever when you’re robbed. The fact of the matter is that this will work sometimes, but there’s no way to know if you’re dealing with a resource or process predator. Do they just want your money, or do they want you?

Guess What I Bought?

“A gun?”

What happened to the AMU’s YouTube page?
They used to make great instructional videos like this. and this: Nowadays all they ever post are clips from matches, edited together, not even whole stages. The relevant, instructional content is gone. What’s up with that?

Hickok45, the Internet, and Gun Culture 2.0
This morning, the internet woke up to an ominous warning screen on the channel of Hickok45, one of YouTube’s biggest gun channels. The error message said the account had been “terminated” and gave a non-descript message about “repeated violations of terms of service.” Hickock himself has posted on Facebook that the root cause seems to …
