If I’m Coming to the United States for a Competition, Can I Carry Concealed?

Wed, 11/11/2015 - 23:02

Chris from Action Shooting Radio sends in this voicemail. He’s thinking about coming to the United States from Canada for some competitive shooting matches, and he’s curious about whether or not he could carry while here.

We dug through the laws for a bit, and the best answer we could come up with is “maybe”. It’s all going to depend on the state he’s in, and the local laws there.

Recreational Shooters Lack the Data to Get Better

Wed, 11/04/2015 - 19:22

I’ve mentioned on the blog and the podcast recently that I’ve been getting back into cycling. In doing so, I’ve been spending some time on message boards, and subreddits relating to the topic to get caught up on things as I’ve been off the bike for about 7 years. I’ve noticed some interesting parallels between the cycling and shooting communities, but I’ve also noticed one big glaring difference. Almost all cyclists have data.

Any Advise for Shooting Matches in Crappy Weather?

Tue, 11/03/2015 - 23:02

Stephanie in Raleigh calls in a voicemail for today’s episode asking for tips on shooting in crappy weather. We both agree that mindset is important, but it’s easier to keep your mind in the right place if you have a little gear that helps keep the mud and water off your stuff.

  • Instead of using a range bag at the mud slog that was the 2015 NC State USPSA Sectional, I put all my stuff in a 5 gallon bucket with this lid. (It was like $7.50 at Lowes, FYI)
  • Sometimes you have to accept that you’ll be wet, and just try to wear clothes that will dry out quickly.
  • Bring extra shoes and socks. More than you think you’ll need, even if you have waterproof shoes.

Bob calls in a voicemail to ask about magazine maintenance after he had an issue with the grip extension on one of his magazines pop off while carrying not too long ago. Neither of us really do a lot of maintenance, but I’ve also had an issue with Pearce grip extensions, so personally, I don’t use them anymore.

Strategy Differences for Major/Minor Power Factor – 158

Sun, 11/01/2015 - 18:56

Ben talks about some of the USPSA strategy differences that he’s noticed coming from shooters who shoot Major power factor, and those who shoot Minor power factor. Turns out, when accepting advice from another shooter on a certain stage or strategy, you should weigh whether or not they are shooting Major or Minor power factor, because if you’re shooting something different, you may want a different strategy.
