A New .17 HMR Semiauto from Savage Arms: The A17 Rifle

Sun, 01/25/2015 - 21:25

Anyone who’s ever shot a firearm chambered in .17 HMR knows how fun the cartridge can be. The zippy round is one of the most flat-shooting rimfire cartridges out there, and it’s perfect for punching paper and varmint control. However, the tremendous pressure built up by the powered-up round made it difficult to adapt to typical rimfire semiautomatic designs, and very few reliable .17 HMR semiautos are available on the market. This year, Savage Arms is upsetting the bolt-action .17 HMR status quo with a new autoloading contender: the A17 rifle. The A17 utilizes a specially designed...

Observing that the animal had lost a large amount of blood, Rutherford decided to carry the deer roughly two miles back to his home for treatment. Video: History Buff Shows Off Astounding Archery Skills

Fri, 01/23/2015 - 09:02

With years of practice and experience, archers can accomplish amazing things. Things such as splitting a falling piece of thread, accurately shooting 10 arrows in 5 seconds, and dropping a deer at 100 yards. There are few archers such as Lars Anderson however. The Danish athlete, artist, and hobbyist historian has a keen interest in recreating archery methods long since fallen out of use. To do this, Lars began poring over medieval texts and studied the techniques of battlefield archers before the weapon was replaced by firearms. What resulted was a dazzling array of abilities that Lars is...

Thu, 01/22/2015 - 15:54

However, those basic rules do not cover all scenarios, and some shooters find themselves woefully unprepared for rare occurrences such as the much dreaded squib round. Other events, such as out-of-battery detonations or improper handloading, could also have very dangerous consequences. Here are 9 cases where pulling the trigger did not...

Thu, 01/22/2015 - 13:17

Commercial fishermen off the coast of Australia have captured a rarely seen frilled shark, a species so primitive that it is often referred to as a "living fossil." According to CNN, the 5-foot shark was captured at a depth of 1,100 meters in southwestern Australia by David Guillot. The fish was still alive when Guillot pulled it to the surface, but quickly expired. "I've been fishing 30 years and never saw anything like it. So I brought it in," he told CNN. "Honestly, we thought we had caught a brand new species,...

Resident hunters will also be able to donate their harvests, either processed or not, directly to prisons. "This would allow state, municipal, county...

Video: Tangled Bucks Separated by Chainsaw

Thu, 01/22/2015 - 10:55

Finding a pair of antler-locked bucks is often a somber experience. Much of the time, tangled antlers can mean a sure death sentence for both deer, yet is not uncommon for one of the bucks to soldier on long after the other one perished. Suffering from hunger and exhaustion, the survivor will have to carry the weight of its defeated rival while escaping the attentions of opportunistic predators. There have been cases where bucks were found carrying little more than an extra set of racks after...
