FLIR Releases New Scout II Thermal Monocular

Thu, 01/22/2015 - 09:26

At SHOT Show 2015 FLIR launched their new Scout II handhelds, a pair of compact thermal imaging cameras built explicitly for civilian use.

The FLIR company pioneered the Forward Looking Infra-Red technology for the military and now designs and builds thermal systems for all kinds of purposes.

If you're not familiar with it, thermal night vision sees heat not light, so hot and cold spots will be highlighted regardless of whether it's daylight, dark, or your "target" is obscured by smoke.

Part of FLIR's expansion outside of the defense market has meant

Thu, 01/22/2015 - 09:26

For ten straight days, beaches near Newcastle, Australia were closed off to the public after numerous sightings of a 16-foot, 3,700-pound great white shark. Beaches were reopened on Monday after lifeguard patrols determined that the massive shark had moved off, but not before one final encounter with a pair of fishermen over the weekend. According to the Newcastle...

Exclusive: Hands-on with the New Benelli 828U Over/under Shotgun

Wed, 01/21/2015 - 21:52

I felt my face flush with nervous anticipation as I stepped up to the designated shooting area. Taking a deep breath, I tried to relax while I surveyed the scenery in front of me: a snow-covered cliff overlooking the Missouri River. I checked my stance and bounced slightly, bending my knees. I held the shotgun at low ready. I could feel the eyes of the eight men who were behind me, watching to see how I would shoot. It’s now or never, I thought, as I yelled, “Pull!” I caught sight of the pair of clays, quickly shouldered the over/under and snapped off two shots, turning both...

Glock Goes Optical and Adds a New 10mm Powerhouse

Wed, 01/21/2015 - 21:30

There’s been much speculation about what Glock may or may not announce at the 2015 SHOT Show. A single-stack 9mm, the Glock 1911, and a pocket polymer flamethrower have all been tossed around as potential product announcements. Well, at the pre-SHOT media range event, I found out exactly what they'd be bringing out in 2015.

Their new products include a series of optics-ready enhancements to existing pistols and a new 10mm handgun. All four new guns feature the Glock Modular Optic System (MOS) system. MOS pistols include custom-milled frames and mounting plates that allow

Wed, 01/21/2015 - 15:29

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission announced last week that there will be no mountain lion season for 2015, and will instead pursue a new three-year study on the state's big cats. Commission director Jim Douglass told The Lincoln Journal Star that more study on the state's cougar population will help officials make decisions on how to manage the species. "It doesn't mean that we will not have a season during the three-year period....

Wed, 01/21/2015 - 11:47

A pipeline breach has resulted in disaster for one of North America's premier trout-fishing streams, and possibly contaminated drinking water for many nearby residents as well. According to CNN, the spill occurred early last Saturday when the pipeline burst near the Yellowstone River five miles upstream of Glendive, Montana. The Bridger Pipeline company, which quickly acted to shut down the pipeline, initially reported 300 to 1,200 barrels of oil spilled, but state officials later estimated the amount to be over 50,000...

East Meets West in the PTR-32 Gen 2

Wed, 01/21/2015 - 00:18

This year at SHOT Show, PTR Industries introduced a unique blend of East and West in the form of the PTR-32 Gen 2. The PTR-32 is a roller-delayed blowback firearm (based off the German HK91/G3 action) chambered in the classic Soviet 7.62x39mm cartridge, and feeds from most AK-pattern magazines. PTR is well-known for its excellent PTR-91 line of .308 rifles, and the PTR-32 Gen 2 seeks to build upon that reputation. The firearm will be offered in two different rifle-length configurations. The PTR-32 KFR will come with a "traditional" HK black polymer stock and...

Gun Maker Cuts Ties with Liam Neeson after Star’s Anti-gun Rant

Tue, 01/20/2015 - 15:51

PARA USA, an American firearms manufacturer that provided the weapons for the recent film Taken 3, has announced that they will no longer work with actor Liam Neeson or any films he will be attached to in the future, as well as encouraging other industry partners to do so as well. The announcement followed the actor's recent rant on American gun control laws in the wake of the terror shooting in Paris, France. 'There's just too many [expletive] guns out there,' said Neeson in a press conference. "'Especially in...

Video: Duck Hunters Run into “Bird Storm”

Tue, 01/20/2015 - 13:45

Imagine driving your UTV to a pit blind when a brace of ducks fly overhead. Oh, that's pretty neat, you might remark to yourself, as even more ducks---and some confused looking geese---pass you by. Looks like you'll have little trouble bagging dinner. But then, wave after wave of the birds start battering your windshield like feathery hail and all you can hear is the quacking of ten thousand ducks all at once. The hunters in this video came across a waterfowl whirlwind, and it is both scary and memorizing. The men take shelter behind the relative safety of their windshield, but their dog...

South African Angler Lands 196-pound Giant Guitarfish

Tue, 01/20/2015 - 12:55

South African angler Dean Reddy says he does not give much thought to fishing records, but his recent estimated 196-pound guitarfish would surely give the current world record a run for its money. Reddy landed the massive fish earlier this month while fishing off Kwazulu, South Africa. After a grueling two-hour battle, Reddy was able to reel in the 8-foot guitarfish in on his Daiwa Dogfight, but not before the fish took nearly 2,200 feet of line. "The fish took about 700m of string so luckily I had 900m on the reel," he wrote on Read more »

The Rise of the “Guntry” Clubs: How Luxury Shooting Became Mainstream

Tue, 01/20/2015 - 11:46

Shooting enthusiasts may have heard the term "guntry clubs" thrown around---a reference to the popularity of high-end gun ranges that break from the mold of a traditional shooting range. Combining country club appeal with the characteristic sound of a live firing range, guntry clubs seek to offer a more refined experience for discerning shooters. The customer demographic is different as well, and guntry clubs tend to draw in younger, more urban, and increasingly female customers. “They are popping up more often now than they did five years ago,” Zach Snow, promotions manager with the...

Photos: Trigger Time with the New DP-12 Shotgun

Tue, 01/20/2015 - 04:49

Buzz about a new double-barreled, bullpup, pump-action shotgun dubbed the DP-12 began to spread late last year. At yesterday's Industry Day at the Range, samples of the unique gun were finally available to shoot. Built by Standard Manufacturing Company and distributed exclusively through CheaperThanDirt, the 12 gauge DP-12 is a compact and capable shotgun. The firearm's two barrels feed from separate tubes that hold seven shells (plus one in each chamber, yielding an overall capacity of 16 shells). Shells are loaded and ejected downward behind the trigger. Both of the DP-12's barrels...

Photos: Shooting the SIG Sauer MCX

Tue, 01/20/2015 - 04:08

SIG Sauer introduced their new MCX rifle to the media at their separate range day event yesterday. The MCX is designed to use suppressors from the ground up, modular, and ultra-lightweight. While it looks slightly similar to the AR-15, the MCX uses a distinct auto-regulating, short-stroke gas piston operating system. A shooter can use supersonic and subsonic loads in the firearm one after the other without worrying about fine-tuning the gas system. Even when shooting supersonic 300 BLK loads from an unsuppressed, nine-inch-barreled MCX, the gun was very controllable. Firing...

Video: A Look at the 1911’s Predecessors

Mon, 01/19/2015 - 16:08

It is not every day when you run across a cache of carefully preserved Colt semi-automatics, and when Ian of ForgottenWeapons.com finds a trove of these pistols at the Rock Island Auction house, he decides it's time for a history lesson. The venerable M1911---and its M1911A1 variant---served as the standard-issue sidearm for the US Armed Forces from 1911 to 1985, and continues to be widely popular today. It was designed by John Moses Browning, a vastly influential gun designer that is today widely regarded as a genius. Seeing as how he designed...

Five Terrifying, Alien-like Fish Parasites

Mon, 01/19/2015 - 15:40

Back in November, we covered a host of common game fish diseases and parasites, ranging from disgusting---yet run-of-the-mill---tapeworms to the very common black spot disease, also known as Neascus. This list is a little bit different, and includes some of the parasites that were either too bizarre or simply too outlandish to include in that article. There are a lot of critters in the water that do not mind piggy-backing on some tasty fish for survival, but these five parasites do it in a way...
