Eat the Invasive: 7 Simple Asian Carp Recipes

Fri, 01/09/2015 - 08:38

At first glance, there seem to be few good things about bighead and silver carp. These two highly invasive species of Asian carp can be found throughout the Mississippi River and its tributaries, and biologists worry that the carp will eventually make their way into waterways that are vulnerable to colonization---such as the economically vital Great Lakes. Bighead and silver carp are large, slimy, and won't hesitate to jump straight at your face---which is never fun with a fish that can weigh 100 pounds. Biologists have a number of ways to slow their spread, from sonic barriers to...

Top 7 Deer Hunting Myths Debunked

Fri, 01/09/2015 - 08:12

Deer are the most popular game animal in North America, and with that "popularity" comes a host of superstitions, myths, or straight-up untruths. Many of these come from hunters themselves, whether they're outrageous theories, stories they heard from their friends, or simply legends handed down from their elders. Most of these are in good-natured fun, much like wearing your lucky shirt when bowling or donning three different jerseys for the Super Bowl. But sometimes these myths are taken seriously. Perhaps worse, other misconceptions are spread by those who oppose deer hunting. Here...

Video: Cat Fails Miserably at Ice Fishing

Fri, 01/09/2015 - 07:27

A few weeks ago we posted a video of a cat trying its paw at ice fishing. Well, we've found a video of another feline having even less success. Whereas the other cat at least managed to get one paw below the surface, this one ends up sliding all around the ice as it tries to pounce on some pond fish. Tough luck, kitty. Maybe next time it'll convince its owners to bring an ice auger. http://youtu.be/P4xPVuKlfGY...

Where, How, and Why: DIY Antelope Bowhunting

Thu, 01/08/2015 - 14:54

Most bowhunters get their start in pursuit of deer. Whitetails are the number-one game species targeted by bowhunters by a large margin, mule deer are high on the list in the Western United States. When bowhunters turn to a second big game species, the black bear gets the nod followed by the antelope. In fact, west of the great plains, the antelope is a highly-sought-after species that lends itself well to bowhunting. Some hunters start out with an outfitter to learn the ropes and others just jump in head first with a hunt on their own. Antelope hunting is all kinds of fun, they are...

Utah Officials Expand Bear Hunt as Population, Conflicts Increase

Thu, 01/08/2015 - 13:57

The Utah Wildlife Board approved the expansion of bear hunting opportunities for 2015 in a meeting on Monday, including new spring, summer, and fall limited-entry hunts as well as a harvest-objective hunt. The decision came after a large increase in bear conflicts due to a rising population across the state. According to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR), the state's black bear population has increased steadily for years, and exploded from around 2,000 animals 15 years ago to over 4,000 today. "On average, about 50 bears have to be euthanized each year after coming into...

Thu, 01/08/2015 - 13:12

Oregon officials have confirmed that the state's famous wandering wolf, OR-7, is now the leader of his own pack. The male gray wolf stepped into the spotlight between 2009 and 2011 when he traveled thousands of miles from northeast Oregon into California, becoming the first wolf to be seen in the Golden State since 1924. Recently, the wolf came back to Oregon with a mate in tow, and biologists reported seeing wolf pups last June. The pups were the first wolves to be born in Oregon's...

Ice Fisherman Develops Ice Auger That Doubles as Go-cart

Thu, 01/08/2015 - 07:42

Have you ever wished that your ice auger could also double as the motor of a small go-cart? Wisconsin angler and inventor Adam Ford did, and he is hoping that crowdfunding will raise the $30,000 he needs to put his contraption into production. The aptly named Ice Auger Go Cart Machine is impressively simple, and works by using the motor from the auger to power a chain-drive operated go-cart. The motor operates the cart by moving its rear wheels, and users can swap the smaller front wheels for skis if needed. The handle of the motor section also serves as the steering wheel while driving. Upon...

Study: Dangerous Cat Parasites May Be Infecting Deer

Wed, 01/07/2015 - 14:43

When it comes to the host of dangers that wild deer face, few people think of feral cats. However, a study by researchers at Ohio State University found that feral cats may be responsible for the presence of a dangerous parasite in deer called Toxoplasma gondii. According to the study, which was recently published in the journal Ecohealth, the number of deer infected with the parasite coincided with the number of wild cats in their area. Researchers collected samples from over 400 whitetail deer in the Cleveland, Ohio...

Where to Find Color Phase Black Bears

Wed, 01/07/2015 - 14:01

Some may be surprised to learn that black bears come in a wide variety of colors. Black bears are often loosely grouped into the four following color phases: Blonde, which is a yellow to very light-brown color. A blonde bear's head or legs may be darker. Cinnamon, which is brownish with a distinct red tint characteristic of the spice after which it is named. In some areas these are called red bears. Brown or chocolate, which can range from fairly light brown to a deeper chocolate-brown color. Black, which of course is unmistakably black, often accompanied by a shiny sheen. Blacks...

Anglers Promote Use of Descending Devices to Save Deep-water Fish

Wed, 01/07/2015 - 08:50

Anglers, biologists, and conservation groups such as the Sportfishing Conservancy are urging fishermen to use descending devices when releasing deep-water fish. Anglers who chase after species such as rockfish are familiar with a condition called barotrauma, more commonly known as "the bends." The bends affect humans and fish alike, and occurs when a diver (human or otherwise) is exposed to a significant change in water pressure. For a fish on a hook, rapid ascent will cause gasses in its swim bladder to expand, resulting in the organ pushing the animal's stomach through its mouth or...

Wed, 01/07/2015 - 08:35

After a four-year study, scientists at Colorado State University have made a breakthrough in their research on a vaccine to prevent chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer. The researchers published their study in the medical journal Vaccine last month, calling the experimental vaccine a "partial success." "Our reported results show for the first time that protection from exogenous prion infection is possible in a species naturally at risk for infection," the authors wrote in the paper. CWD is...

Video: The “Fully Automatic” Revolver Cap Gun

Wed, 01/07/2015 - 08:21

What do you get when you combine Joerg Sprave of the Slingshot Channel, a drill, some clever woodworking, and four revolver cap guns? Well, in this case, you get a "fully automatic" four-barreled contraption he cheerfully named "Revolverception." Seeing how the famed slingshot designer lives in Burgkunstadt, Germany, Sprave elected to use cap guns in place of real working revolvers for his prototype. As he points out, however, the design should also work with any revolver with a trigger pull similar to that of the cap guns. Of course,...

Louisiana Considers “Catch and Cook” Program

Tue, 01/06/2015 - 13:52

Nothing wraps up a long day on the water better than the smell of fish sizzling on the grill, but not all anglers prefer to cook their own catch. So why not leave it to the professionals? A new proposal in Louisiana will allow anglers to hand over their hard-fought catches to their favorite restaurants and chefs to cook. According to the Daily Comet, the fish must be cleaned and processed by anglers beforehand, and can only be...

Is there anything better than the smile produced when a novice angler catches their first fish? Even if they are buried under layers of scarf and coat, that smile is still there. Two proud parents managed to catch video of their two-year-old girl ice fishing for the first time, and she even manages to land a nice rainbow trout. With a little help from mom and dad, the young angler manages to bring the trout flapping onto the ice. Judging from those excited squeals, it probably won't be the last time she goes ice fishing. http://youtu.be/QxPAGI4zagI...
