Located somewhere in Kansas, the recently completed Survival Condo 1 was built inside of an underground missile silo and is designed to withstand any number of disaster scenarios. Autumn Bluegills Biting in Western Michigan

Wed, 11/19/2014 - 13:23

John Hojnacki made a name for himself as a steelhead angler. But when the 57-year-old grocery store produce manager called the other day, he was all excited about something completely different: bluegills. “It’s stupid good,” Hojnacki said. “We went out there other day at one o’clock (p.m.) and were done in an hour with a limit.” I challenged him to show me. He did. So I wound up on a Western Michigan reservoir (he didn’t want me to say which one because, he said, he didn’t want “700 boats out there” the next time he goes and besides, it doesn’t matter, they’re...

4 Outstanding AR-15 Scopes That Cost Less Than $400

Wed, 11/19/2014 - 12:38

If you splurge on a 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500-KR, you’re not going to fill the crank case with reclaimed Crisco just to save a few bucks. A similar principle applies to optics. Even with AR-15 prices falling faster than Blockbuster's stock price, you're still probably going to spend north of $600 on a rifle. Don’t cheat yourself by purchasing an optic not qualified for the task. Cheap optics can give you headaches from fogging, poor light transmission, and inconsistent adjustment performance. Most frustrating of all are those times you can’t seem to zero your rifle, not matter what,...

3 Things to Look for to Accurately Field Judge Antelope

Wed, 11/19/2014 - 08:07

For some, antelope are an animal that they pursue year after year. But for others, an antelope hunt is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Knowing how to judge an antelope on the hoof can be quite difficult, making it very easy to mistake 5 inches for 10. This can potentially make for a lot of ground shrinkage and disappointment. When it comes to field judging, there are only three things to look for: length of horn, length of prong, and mass. With a few simple tricks, antelope can become one of the easiest animals in North America to score on the hoof. Length of horn When field judging the...

Where Are Bucks Hiding? New Study Reveals Insights into Buck Behavior

Wed, 11/19/2014 - 07:18

Any hunter knows that as bucks behave differently as deer season drags on. Many inquisitive sportsmen will ask how large a buck's home range is, how far the animal will travel, whether older bucks are smarter than younger bucks, and whether that 10-pointer they've had their eye on all season really is sneaking into their food plot every night. A recently completed study by researchers at Auburn University, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and Brosnan Forest may shed some light on how bucks behave...

This video has been floating around on the internet for a few years, but has been recently gaining traction after being posted to LiveLeak. In it, a woman firing what appears to be a M1 Garand suffers a catastrophic failure that will make your jaw drop. The standard US service rifle for both World War II and the Korean War, the M1 Garand has earned its reputation as a powerful and accurate rifle. Wed, 11/19/2014 - 07:05

Is Vermont on your list of places to fish? Perhaps it should be. Officials from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department are reminding both resident and non-resident anglers of the widely expanded fishing opportunities in the state, which involves opening over 70 additional miles of river to year-round trout fishing. “The regulations were intended to provide expanded fishing opportunities for trout while limiting the potential impact to populations,” Rich Kirn, fisheries biologist with Vermont Fish & Wildlife, said in a Read more »

Holiday Gift Suggestions for the Angler in Your Life

Tue, 11/18/2014 - 15:38

I’ve scoured my industry connections up and down to find the best gift ideas for the angler in your life this holiday season. You’ll find small stocking stuffers, big gifts, wonderfully tactile clothing, and books for a good read by the fire. You won’t see any rods or reels in this gift guide, though. I just think they are too personal for what each angler wants or needs in their own rod locker. So if you want to buy a rod and/or reel, ask your angler for the specifics and they will gladly tell you. Now, on to all those other goodies. Merry Christmas, and God bless! Clam Tackle...

Florida Expected to Legalize Suppressors for Hunting This Week

Tue, 11/18/2014 - 13:51

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will meet on November 20 to discuss whether the agency wants to overturn a 57-year ban on hunting with suppressors. Commonly known as silencers, these devices work by trapping the expanding gasses of a round being fired, muffling the sound to a point where it is much safer for human ears. Hunters in Florida and elsewhere have long called for legalizing suppressors for hunting, which they say will promote hearing health. The issue is not without contention, however, and the legality of suppressors is hotly debated in the...

Canadian Man and His 3-year-old Daughter Win “Too Young to Ice Fish” Case

Tue, 11/18/2014 - 13:40

Just how old does an angler have to be to go ice fishing? If you happen to live in Saskatchewan, there is now a precedent for no minimum age whatsoever. This came about after an incident in March when an ice fisherman, Jack Pick, was ticketed for dipping four lines into Turtle Lake. According to the CBC, regulations only allow an angler two lines at a time, but the man claimed that the extra pair were for his daughter, who was beside him at the time. The conservation officer...

“Innocent Targets” is Just More Misrepresentation and Fear Mongering from the Anti-gun Crowd

Tue, 11/18/2014 - 10:53

An art project/guerrilla marketing campaign called “Innocent Targets” recently began making the rounds in online gun communities. Its main exhibit is a series of posters modeled after bad-guy paper targets, but featuring the images of “innocents” (a bride, a pizza delivery man, and a “hunter” who looks like he just walked off the set of a Wes Anderson film, to name a few) instead of the typical terrorist lookalike or mugger. The posters can be purchased online, and proceeds from the purchases go to the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. According to the project’s creators, Banana...

Tue, 11/18/2014 - 08:00

Two anglers fishing in Alberta's Castle River may have recently made the catch of their lifetimes. According to the National Post, a father and son made the discovery in August when they came across a fossil of a dinosaur's skull, neck, and chest while fishing near the waterway. The pair then immediately contacted the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology, which sent employees to retrieve the 2,800-pound boulder containing the fossils last month. “It is...

This father-son hunting duo came within touching distance of a bull moose during recent trip to Colorado. The pair were hunting for elk, but managed to call the moose over instead. The large animal didn't seem to mind---or see the hunters for that matter---and mosied on by so that the two men could continue their hunt. What's the largest animal you've unintentionally called? http://youtu.be/S2Y2tQKyXlc...

Hunters Take “Unicorn” Deer on Two Different Continents

Mon, 11/17/2014 - 15:46

Unicorns may not exist, but these deer may have you believing in the myth after all. A hunter in Celje, Slovenia and another in Spokane, Washington both harvested what can only be described as "unicorn" deer. Caused by a rare form of antler deformity or hormonal imbalance, the deer these hunters both took a deer with only one antler where two should be. “I felt kind of lucky. I even played the lotto last weekend,” Amy Calkins told KULR8. Calkins harvested her unicorn deer near Mt. Spokane late last...

As we all know, there are a lot of reasons that someone might need a flashlight. Personally, I really enjoy camping, hunting, and fishing. There are also many occasions that call for a flashlight at home for those who do not get out and camp much. The Interstate 900 Lumen LED Rechargeable...

5 Classic Hunting Scenes in Films that You May Have Missed

Mon, 11/17/2014 - 11:36

Hunters rarely get a positive portrayal in Hollywood films. Movies love to paint hunters as trigger-happy, gun-toting bumpkins who just want to shoot something. Of course, not all films fall into this trap and with recent movies like The Hunger Games, it seems that interest is stirring within the Hollywood machine for a more accurate portrayal of what hunting is. That said, there have been a number of memorable hunting-related scenes in movies throughout the years that have caught our eye. Many veer from the fantastical (dinosaurs from Jurassic Park: The Lost World) to the...
