What You Didn’t Know About a Deer’s Sense of Smell
Everyone knows the whitetail deer has an amazing sense of smell. But how good is it really, and what are the factors that deer rely on to know what’s going on in their environment? Here are a few things you probably didn’t know about a deer’s ability to smell.
I was situated 20 feet up in a tree nature had placed in a good spot for seeing deer. Less than 10 yards in front of me was the edge of a picked cornfield, and beside me ran a well-used deer tail leading to the field from a bedding area. It was early November, and the rut was heating up.
An hour before dark, a doe...
The Top 8 Most Realistic Hollywood Gun Scenes
Given enough time and typewriters, a barrel of monkeys could write the script for Dumb and Dumber. I’m guessing it might take three monkeys with a used Smith-Corona Speedline about an hour. Following similar logic, with enough movies, even the folks in Hollywood are bound to get some gun scenes right.
It’s probably too much to ask for those folks to get a whole movie right when it comes to guns, so I’ll focus on only a few clips here---shining examples of mostly realistic gun scenes. As with my previous list that focused on the worst Hollywood gun scenes, there...
Alaska Bowhunter’s Grizzly Could Become New World Record
The Pope and Young Club announced on Monday that a grizzly bear taken in 2011 may be the new world record for the largest grizzly ever harvested by bow and arrow. That bear was killed by Rodney Debias near Unalakleet, Alaska and earned an initial entry score of 27 and 3/16, a full inch larger than the current record, which is held by OutdoorHub contributor Dennis Dunn of BAREBOW! fame.
Debias bagged his bear not too far from where Dunn took his grizzly roughly a decade ago in the tundra...
Video: Spike Elk Nearly Walks Right into Man Filming It
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation recently posted the following video to their Facebook page, showing an encounter with a spike elk in Idaho. In what might be the elk's first encounter with a human, it almost bumps right into the person filming it. The young elk jumps in fright, but quickly returns to investigate the strange biped with the excellent camouflage.
As has been shown on countless occasions, the right combination of scent blocker and camo can make animals do really strange things. The video (which you will probably want to...
Video: Young Machinist Designs Ammunition for 3D-printed Guns
While some people still view 3D-printed firearms with an air of skepticism, there is little denying that the technology is here and only getting more sophisticated. Amateur gun designers are especially excited---you can sketch out a firearm, print your first prototype, test it, and go back to the drawing board all in one day. However, 3D printing still has its limits.
ABS plastic, the material commonly used to print these new age firearms, is as only as hard as plastic can allow. That means that when fired for the first time, many of these printed firearms often fail in the most...
Researchers Confirm Wild Atlantic Salmon Are Breeding Naturally in Michigan
Michigan anglers and biologists have been wondering for years about whether Atlantic salmon were reproducing in the Great Lakes, and a recent study seems to have brought good news. Research by scientists at Lake Superior State University (LSSU) has confirmed that Atlantic salmon are breeding naturally in the state's waters.
"It was very exciting to everyone who was a part of my research to imagine what we had just stumbled upon," said Stefan Tucker, the LSSU graduate student who published the results of the study...
Dave Genz Brings Ice Fishing to Open Water with His Holey Boat
The Godfather of Ice Fishing drilled two eight-inch holes in the floor of his brand new boat---on purpose. Truth is, Dave Genz couldn’t be happier. When this ice fishing guru can’t be on the ice, now his open water fishing environment feels exactly like it (except for needing the parka, bibs, and boots, that is). Take a 54-second tour of Genz’s new "open water ice fishing boat" by watching the video below. He calls it his Holey Boat.
http://youtu.be/lZspuQXhwhk
The command center (at the stern by the tiller motor) has everything Genz needs. The eight-inch hole opens straight...
Video: How a Frozen Trigger and Firing Pin Almost Ruined an Elk Hunt
Hunters who have carried guns into cold environments know that moisture can be a very bad thing, and the same principle concerns gun oil as well. Of course, frozen gun parts tend to make themselves known at the most inopportune times, and they are rarely restricted to just one component.
Bob Beck of Extreme Outer Limits TV experienced not one, but two malfunctions during a bull elk hunt in Wyoming. First, he found that the trigger on his rifle had frozen and required a great degree of force to pull. The second round he chambered wouldn't even fire, thanks to a frozen firing pin.
"I must...
Alaska Deer Hunters Fend Off Attack by 5 Brown Bears
What do you call a group of bears? The most familiar term may a "pack," but more interesting terms include a "sleuth," a "sloth," and perhaps most ominously, a "maul." For hunters carrying deer meat, however, "trouble" may suffice. According to a report by the US Coast Guard, a party of deer hunters near Kodiak, Alaska was ambushed and attacked by at least five brown bears. The bears, believed to be a mixture of adults and cubs, severely injured one of the hunters but were eventually driven off or killed by the other hunters in the...
Photos: Lancer Systems Brings High-tech Innovation to Modern Firearms
Lancer Systems is known to most shooters for their translucent hybrid steel and polymer AR magazines, as well as their carbon fiber handguards and stocks. They also manufacture rifles, which are popular among many 3-gunners. I visited their new factory in Quakertown, Pennsylvania last week, and it quickly became clear that Lancer is not "just" a gun company---they are a tech company that's bringing their technological know-how to guns and accessories.
Lancer Systems is an engineering-driven organization that makes ceramic and carbon fiber...
9 Priceless Hunting Reactions That Will Make You Smile
For many sportsmen and women, few trips are more memorable than the ones that introduce a new hunter to what "buck fever" really means. Remember the excitement of getting your first deer, your first successful waterfowl excursion, or even stalking a bull moose in the wilds of Canada? Nothing captures the roller coaster of emotion that follows that first shot better than recording it on camera, and a little bit of that unadulterated joy shows through in the videos embedded below.
Be prepared to pop a few grins as you smile along with these new hunters as they discover a newfound passion. And...
Video: Deer Gets Mouth Stuck in Plastic Pumpkin
This trick-or-treater got a little more than just some candy for Halloween: it also got a nifty mask. Residents of Mentor, Ohio spotted this deer with its nose stuck in a plastic pumpkin shortly after Halloween and now it is wandering all over town, trying to get it off.
"My son and I saw the deer when we came out for the bus on Wednesday morning," resident Patty O'Donnell told WKYC, adding that the deer was trying to use its front legs to remove the...
4 Shotgunning Drills You Can Do at Home
Winter’s coming. For a lot of us, that means shotgunning becomes a pain in the...thermometer! I tend to think I love all forms of shotgunning more than the next guy, but in zero or below-zero temps I find I love them a lot less. If I work up the fortitude to shoot trap in January or go on a last-day-of-the-season pheasant hunt, there’s always the inconvenience of accommodating bulky jackets with shorter stocks.
Even if you don’t live in the North Country, getting to the range can be tough to squeeze into a busy day---and shooting (or even drilling) in the backyard might earn a...
South Carolina Angler’s Ashes to Rest in Fish Sanctuary He Helped Build
For years, Ron McManus focused his energies on building artificial reefs along the South Carolina coast. It was only natural for the avid angler, who lived in Little River, to want to give back and help preserve the state's fisheries for the next generation. However, McManus succumbed to a long fight with cancer earlier this year. Now, family, friends, and the community are honoring his work by placing his ashes in the fish sanctuary that he helped build.
"It was what was his getaway. He loved the ocean, the commune with the Lord and the specialness of God's creation," Katharine McManus,...
Video: Trail Cam Captures Deer Decomposition
Ever wonder what happens after a deer that dies in the wild? Well, just because you won't be getting any of that tasty venison doesn't mean it will go to waste. Like all other animals, a deer that dies from natural causes will end up a buffet for scavengers. In the video embedded below by Lone Star Outdoor News, it shows that even the "lifespan" of a deer carcass can be eventful.
According to the video's description, it was recorded in North Texas.

MLB First Baseman Adam LaRoche Bags Massive Elk
Baseball season may be over, but hunting season is still in full swing for many sportsmen and women across the country. First baseman Adam LaRoche is enjoying his time by doing a little bit of elk hunting in Wyoming, and took this impressive-looking specimen recently.

How ‘Duck Dynasty’s’ Mountain Man Was Fired from a Job for Deer Hunting
What is the most that you have ever risked for a chance at a buck? In a recent interview with Fox News , Duck Dynasty cast member Tim Guraedy, or "Mountain Man" as he is known to fans, revealed how he lost a previous job due to his love for deer hunting.
Guraedy held a variety of jobs before he landed a spot on A&E's Duck Dynasty. Although he is now a TV star, radio host, and author, Guraedy also tried his hand at air conditioner...
Remington Defense to Deliver Rifle Parts to US Marine Corps
Remington Defense, part of the Remington Outdoor Company based in North Carolina, announced this week that it had been awarded a contract from the US Marine Corps Systems Command to provide up to 2,000 modular stocks, spares, and magazines. These materials will be used by the Marine Corps as part of its M40 sniper rifle Modular Stock Program, which revolves around a firearm based on the Remington 700 bolt-action rifle and then modified by Corps armorers in Virginia.
"We were excited to compete for and win this critical Marine Corps program,” Greg Baradat, director of US military sales for...
Brief Father-daughter Elk Hunt Delivers Lifelong Memories
Shooting light had just arrived October 11 as my daughter Leah and I followed our friend Jim Simonson uphill toward a rock ledge at 8,800 feet in elevation.
Simonson, a Green Bay, Wisconsin native long since transplanted to Centennial, Colorado, soon disappeared into thick brush about 25 yards uphill. Seconds later, Leah and I heard hoofsteps on the ledge above him.
We knew without looking that the sounds weren’t Simonson. Three elk---all 1.5-year-old spike bulls---stood skylighted on the rock balcony, looking down at us like snooty stage critics. They repeatedly moved back and forth...
Photo: This Eagle Just Learned How to Carry a Knife
Dutch photographer Han Bouwmeester captured this shocking photograph in Västerbotten, Sweden last year. He was trying to attract birds of prey by cutting cutting up some meat to attract the predators. It worked, but instead of grabbing the meat this golden eagle swooped down and picked up the knife Bouwmeester used to cut the meat.
I hope this is not the start of a disturbing trend of knife-wielding eagles.
