5 Strange Parasites That Infect Deer
Earlier this week we covered five common diseases that plague deer in North America, but we also left off an entire section of ailments: parasites. These crawly, wriggly, oozing pests are common in many deer, and can be very damaging to the animal they inhabit---not to mention being very uncomfortable and gross-looking as well. The odds are, if you're an avid deer hunter, you probably already encountered at least one of these before. Thankfully, none of them are harmful to humans and cannot...
Video: How Many Tahr Can You Spot in This Clip?
How many critters can you spot at the beginning of this video? There are probably more than you think. Lots of animals have earned the right to call themselves masters of disguise, but few are as good at the art of camouflage as the common tahr.
http://youtu.be/QSfaHMm1s9A
Once found only in the mountains of the Himalayas, the tahr has now been introduced to new locations like New Zealand, South Africa, and if you get really lucky, you'll even run across one in the Southwestern United States. Related to the wild goat, this sturdy ungulate is at home in rocky, mountainous areas. They are...
Utah Residents “Foster” Pheasant Chicks to Protect Hunt
Earlier this year, the Utah Department of Natural Resources (DNR) gave out thousands of pheasant chicks for state residents to raise. The Day-old Pheasant Chick program was meant to boost success and participation in this year's pheasant hunt, which opened in the state on November 1. The state bought the chicks from a commercial grower for as little as $1.20 each, and the program seems to have been a hit with families.
"Raising a pheasant, from a chick to an adult, is a terrific activity that helps kids and adults understand some of the challenges wildlife face as they grow," Dean Mitchell,...
Picture of Curious Grizzly “Photographer” Goes Viral
Photographer Jim Lawrence was at the right place and right time when he managed to capture this image of a grizzly bear inspecting his camera. Lawrence was taking pictures of the bear as it fished for Kokanee salmon in a British Columbia river, but soon had to dive into some bushes after the bear started approaching his position. Even from his precarious hiding spot, Lawrence managed to snap a few quick photos of the grizzly doing what bears do best: follow their curiosity.

The 3 Things That Make a Successful Pheasant Hunt
It’s another day. Another highway. One city after another---Nashville, St. Louis, Kansas City; then the plains of the Midwest. But this time, as in all road trips with the grandeur of the outdoors at its inevitable end, the miles are just a bit shorter, and the hours spent traveling transform my body and soul into an earlier time when nothing mattered more than watching the world slowly pass by.
Can you say that each hunting trip is the same? Does the elk’s bugle inject the same adrenaline rush as the cackling pheasant flushing underfoot? We all have our preferences, but there are some...
Mississippi, Alabama Vote to Protect Hunting and Fishing in State Constitutions
Voters in Mississippi and Alabama overwhelmingly approved amendments to their state constitutions that protect the right to hunt and fish. Supporters of the proposals say that the amendments will make it harder for animal rights organizations to lobby for hunting and fishing restrictions, while others say it sends a message to the rest of the country. Mississippi and Alabama will now join 17 other states that have similar protections in their own constitution.
“It just makes it tougher for the anti-hunters to take away our rights to hunt and fish,” said Phil DiFatta, an outdoors writer...
Video: Dolphin Jumps onto Anglers’ Boat
Saltwater fishermen are usually more worried about fish like marlin jumping into their boats, but these anglers found that their new crew mate was actually of the warm-blooded variety. According to the video below, this charter boat near Homossassa, Florida was interrupted by a pod of jumping dolphins. One decided to hop aboard and see if there were any fish.
"I don't know what we're going to do about this!" one of the anglers said before radioing for help.
Eventually the anglers were able to reach help and safely release the dolphin back into the ocean.

Michigan Wolf Hunt Proposals Fail, Impact on Future Seasons Unclear
Michigan's debate over its controversial wolf hunting season came to a head on election day this week as voters decided whether or not they supported Proposals 1 and 2. Although the two hunting proposals affirmed the state's ability to designate wolves as a game species among other things, the measures were actually added to the ballot by animal rights groups that opposed wolf hunting. Both proposals failed.
Keep Michigan Wolves Protected (KMWP), along with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), urged their members to vote "no" on both measures.
"The citizens of Michigan have...
Voters Opt for “Enhanced Background Checks” in Washington State
After more than a year of fierce campaigning that saw anti-gun groups ally with billionaire philanthropists, some 60 percent of ballots cast Tuesday in the Evergreen State were in favor of expanding background checks to virtually all gun transfers.
The votes for ballot Initiative 594, fronted by the little-known Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility, intends to change gun statutes in state through its 18-page measure to eliminate what the group calls a "loophole" in the current system. The group had the widespread support of former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Everytown for Gun...
Baskin-Robbins Honors Service Members and Veterans with Camo Ice Cream
With an eye toward Veterans Day, the ice cream chain Baskin-Robbins has unveiled its newest Flavor of the Month: First Class Camouflage. Consisting of a combination of chocolate, salty caramel, and cake-flavored ice cream, these camouflaged treats are what Baskin-Robbins President Bill Mitchel---a US Army veteran himself---calls a "fun and unique way" to celebrate the service of America's military personnel. Of course, a few new flavors and camouflaged waffle cones are not the only way that the ice cream company is giving back. Baskin-Robbins also announced that it will donate 10 cents from...
Biologists, Hunters Puzzled by Moose Sighting in Nevada
Ken Theis was driving on Highway 95 after a hunting trip near Orovada when he spotted an animal he had never seen before in Nevada. It was a young bull moose, and it seemed to be making itself at home. Moose sightings in Nevada are not just rare, they border on being tall tales---especially as far west as Paradise Valley, where biologists from the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) said the bull has been living for about a month.
"You kinda gotta do a double-take, when you see something like that," Theiss told Read more »
Last-minute Deer Season Prep
It's late in the evening November 14, and you're digging through a box of stuff in the closet. You're frantically searching for those blaze orange gloves you just know you have somewhere. You're probably laughing right now, because we've all been there and done exactly that. There are always a few things that end up waiting until the last minute before deer season gets here. I'm going to try really hard to not let it happen to me again this season.
Michigan's firearm deer season happens every year on November 15. For many of us, it's like a holiday. Schools are closed, vacation time saved...
Australian Man Criticized for “Surfing” on Whale During Shark Feeding Frenzy
Harrison Williams, 26, is now regretting what he claims as a spur-of-the-moment act over the weekend. While boating with friends off the coast of Western Australia, Williams spotted a floating whale carcass near Scarborough beach. According to CNN, the whale was surrounded by several tiger sharks and at least one great white, which was enjoying a leisurely snack before Williams jumped onto the...
Video: First Shots from a 3D-printed Hybrid AR-15/FN P90
In May of last year, OutdoorHub covered the release of a design for a 3D-printed AR-15/FN P90 hybrid. At the time, 3D printers and their capability to produce parts for firearms were widely covered by media because another pioneer in the field, Cody Wilson, had recently produced the world's first printable gun. Wilson had since become an icon in what 3D-printing technology has to offer, but other designers continue to prove that Wilson is not the only one who can...
Video: Shooting “Fire Rings” with a Desert Eagle
Few handguns enjoy as much attention in Hollywood and popular culture as the Desert Eagle. This large-framed brainchild of Israel Military Industries and Magnum Research is one of the most iconic pistols of the last quarter decade. Affectionately nicknamed the "Deagle," this over-sized handgun is offered in .50 AE, .44 Magnum, and .357 Magnum---three calibers that can pack quite a punch. Throw in some hand-loaded ammunition, and the gun will bark rings of fire that you have to see to believe.
YouTuber Chaos311Clarity noticed that his hand-loaded .50 AE rounds were producing large fire...
“A Win for Science over Emotion”: Bear Hunters Victorious on Maine Ballot
Yesterday, voters in Maine solidly defeated a ballot referendum that would have virtually eliminated the state’s ability to manage the bear population.
The referendum, known as Maine Question 1, would have banned hunting with bait, hounds, and trapping as management tools for controlling the state's bear population. Hundreds of businesses and thousands of jobs rely on bear hunting in this heavily forested state, where any other type of bear hunting would be fruitless. As it is, with the use of hounds, baits, and cable restrain traps, success rates for bear hunters runs about 30...
Sportsmen Rally Around Young Hunter and His Albino Buck
Last month, 11-year-old Gavin Dingman harvested a 12-point albino whitetail buck during a hunt with his dad in Southeastern Michigan. Pictures of the young hunter and his deer were then uploaded online, but the family hardly expected the backlash that came after. Just days after the hunt, Gavin and his family were bombarded with criticism, insults, and even death threats. Most of vitriol was online on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, but the family also received...
Photo: This Might Be the First Gray Wolf to Reach the Grand Canyon in 70 Years
Could it be that a gray wolf has arrived in Grand Canyon National Park after decades-long absence? Federal and state biologists said they spotted what appears to be a gray wolf in the north rim of the Grand Canyon. The creature has not yet been positively identified, but if it does turn out to be a gray wolf, it will be the first of its kind to have visited the national park in over 70 years.
“It does not appear to be a Mexican wolf,” U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) spokesperson Jeff Humphrey told the Read more »
