Permitless Carry Passes South Carolina House by an Overwhelming 90-30 Margin

Thu, 02/23/2023 - 11:00

The next state to pass constitutional carry looks like it’s going to be South Carolina. In the race between the Palmetto State and Florida to become the 26th member of the Permitless Carry Club, S.C. seems to have the inside position.

From the AP . . .

The 90-30 vote brings the conservative state one step closer to joining 25 others with some form of so-called “constitutional carry” laws. The fate of the state’s latest effort to loosen gun restrictions once more falls to the Senate, where lawmakers rejected a similar proposal two years ago.

New York and California Show What Anti-Gun States Should and Shouldn’t be Doing to Cultivate Youth Hunting

Wed, 02/22/2023 - 16:00

By Joe Bartozzi

California and New York have among the nation’s strictest gun control laws. The governors of each state often brag about forcing even more restrictions on law-abiding gun owners rather than getting tough on criminals who ignore those laws.

Both states have bans on the nation’s most popular and commonly-owned semiautomatic rifle, the modern sporting rifle (MSR). Both are in the legal spotlight for overstepping the Constitution and face myriad court challenges.

New From ShaloTek: P320 Compensated Slide

Wed, 02/22/2023 - 14:00

Rincon, Georgia-based ShaloTek has been quietly manufacturing some of the slickest, nicest SIG SAUER and GLOCK custom slides, frames, and barrels on the market all at extremely competitive prices. Well, maybe they haven’t been too terribly quiet about it but they still somehow slipped under my radar until recently!

No more, though, as I’ve been putting a comp’d P365 slide through its paces for the last couple of months and, with the recent release of their modular frames and P320 parts, I suspect we’ll be seeing a lot more of ShaloTek in the future.

Volokh: Armed Citizens Stop a Significant Percentage Mass Shooters and Save Lives

Wed, 02/22/2023 - 08:00

I gathered some more examples [of armed citizens stopping mass shootings] from over the years here, and then followed up with data based on FBI reports of mass shootings in 2016 and 2017: legal civilian gun carriers tried to intervene in 6 out of 50 incidents, and apparently succeeded in 3 or 4 of them.

The FBI also has 2021 data (I don’t expect the 2022 data until later this year).

Oh NOW the ATF Thinks Running Guns to the Mexican Cartels is a Bad Idea

Tue, 02/21/2023 - 14:00

By Lee Williams

Isaac Hernandez, a 25-year-old American citizen who had been living in Mexico, will spend the next six years in a federal prison contemplating the errors of his ways.

On July 11, 2022, Hernandez was stopped while traveling southbound on I-35 heading toward the Laredo, Texas Port of Entry. Officials found 17 handguns in his car. Further investigation revealed that from Jan. 21, 2020 to July 11, 2022, Hernandez had purchased 231 handguns — 9mm’s, .380’s and .22’s — which officials suspect he smuggled into Mexico.

California Bill Would Mandate Banking Discrimination Against Gun Manufacturers

Tue, 02/21/2023 - 10:00

Never underestimate the ability of California lawmakers to embrace the wildest ideas when it comes to eliminating gun rights. Other states are pushing back on “woke” banking discrimination. Not California. There’s an effort there to require it.

State Sen. Dave Min introduced SB 637, which requires that California’s public finances cease business with any banks or lenders that have business relationships with firearm manufacturers. The bill would affect every aspect of California’s finances, including municipal bonds, capital projects and the state’s debt.

Burton and Derfner: The Supreme Court’s Radical Turn in Favor or Gun Rights Endangers ‘The Security of a Free State’

Tue, 02/21/2023 - 08:00

In the late 20th century, however, a new Supreme Court took a radical turn. Starting in 1995, a 5-4 majority suddenly threw out all or parts of three modest federal laws in five years: the Gun-Free School Zones Act in 1995; the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act in 1997 (that law was passed after President Reagan was shot and his press secretary, James Brady, disabled for life); and Violence Against Women Act in 2000.

“He stopped the threat. He did shoot the suspect.” Those are the words of Union City, Georgia Police Captain Prentice Brooks summarizing what happened over the weekend when Josh Dobbs saw a man stabbing a woman outside his home.

“I just couldn’t sit there and watch and hear what was going on,” Josh Dobbs told FOX 5’s Kim Leoffler.

Dobbs said he just jumped into action when he heard what he correctly assumed were a woman’s screams coming from the Hidden Lake Apartments.

Mon, 02/20/2023 - 15:00

From the AP . . .

Prosecutors have dropped the possibility of a sentence enhancement that could have carried a mandatory five-year sentence against Alec Baldwin in a fatal film-set shooting, according to new court filings made public Monday.

The actor-producer’s attorneys had earlier objected to the enhancement, saying it was unconstitutional because it was added after the October 2021 shooting.

“The prosecutors committed a basic legal error by charging Mr.

We Know How to Stop More Mass Shootings, We Just Have to Decide to Do It

Mon, 02/20/2023 - 14:00

By Rob Morse

News of mass murderers hits everyone on both sides of the gun control debate hard. We all want to stop them, but the question is how. I’ve studied armed defense for about a decade. While I admit there’s more to learn, that makes me a veritable elite subject matter expert compared to the journalists and politicians who shape public policy.

We can stop most mass murders today. We have the tools.

Optic Review: SIG SAUER Whiskey6 3-18x44mm Riflescope

Mon, 02/20/2023 - 12:00

When Jeremy handed me the SIG Cross rifle I hunted with this last season, the SIG SAUER Whiskey6 3-18x44mm riflescope was already mounted on it.

Jeremy commented about the image quality when I picked up the scope.

“I think it’s one of their less expensive lines, but it’s really clear glass,” he told me.

He wasn’t wrong. Especially at this price point, the edge-to-edge clarity of the glass is exceptional.

The Science is Settled: ChatGPT Artificial Intelligence is Smarter Than Anti-Gun Journalists

Mon, 02/20/2023 - 10:00

By BJ Campbell, Handwaving Freakoutery

We prompted the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, the large language model, with a simple question we might just as easily ask of the anti-gun journalists who bombard Twitter with dishonest attention seeking after spree shootings. Then we asked it several more questions, and in the course of the dialogue, we found something interesting…ChatGPT is more capable of learning than your average online journalist.

Let’s pause here for a second.
