Trending Smaller: Micro-Compacts Now Make Up 25% Of 9mm Semi-Auto Handguns Shipped to Retailers

Tue, 09/20/2022 - 12:00

From the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers . . .

Cellphones, mp3 players – the original trend was to make them as small as possible. Compact, easy to transport and slip in a pocket. Nowadays, it seems as though manufacturers and the market are heading in another direction, newer phones hardly fitting in a jeans pocket with larger screens not unlike a small tablet. Storage and capacity are still top of mind, but remote cloud service storage options reduce the necessity of internal storage.

Tue, 09/20/2022 - 11:00

When we saw the photo of the man who had been arrested for dumping dead animals on the memorial for the students and teachers who were killed in the Parkland school shooting, we wondered why the Prime Minister of Canada would do such a thing.

Then we read further and discovered that the suspect wasn’t, in fact, the head of government for our neighbor to the north, but rather a 29-year-old Florida Man who was reportedly obsessed with school shooters.

Safariland Announces the New Optics-Ready Schema IWB Everyday Carry Holster

Tue, 09/20/2022 - 10:00

When you think of Safariland, you think duty holsters. Rigs that ride on the hips of cops and members of the military with Level III retention. They’ve made EDC holsters — both OWB and IWB — for years, but they probably haven’t been top of mind for most buyers when it came time to buy a rig for their new everyday carry pistol.

They’re out to change that with a new range of EDC holsters, the first of which was announced today.

First Look: The Taurus G3 Tactical 9mm Pistol Surprises

Mon, 09/19/2022 - 16:00

When Taurus announced the G3 series of pistols, I wasn’t particularly excited. Having owned a G2 in the past, it performed well for the price point, but ultimately wasn’t anything to write home about. Then I saw the G3 Tactical model, which piqued my curiosity. Taurus isn’t the first name that comes to mind when you’re talking about “tactical” pistols, but this one has suppressor-height sights, optics-readiness, and a threaded barrel, all at a very affordable price.

A Tightening Economy Can Make It Easier to Convince Business to Accommodate Everyone

Mon, 09/19/2022 - 14:00

We’ve covered anti-gunners’ efforts to go after “ghost guns” and other lawful commerce in any way they can. Most recently, they’re pressuring shippers like UPS and Fedex to only ship serialized frames, and take other anti-gun actions that go a lot further.

— Firearms Policy Coalition (@gunpolicy) August 18, 2022

Now, we’re seeing that FedEx is falling on hard times, with their stock tumbling last week (UPS stock took a hit, too).

SIG SAUER’s New MCX-SPEAR-LT in 5.56, 7.62 and 300BLK, Next Gen Features for the Civilian Market

Mon, 09/19/2022 - 10:02

When the military selects a weapons platform, the design and features are distilled and translated down to the consumer market in a range of products. We can see some of that in the third iteration of SIG SAUER’s MCX rifle platform.

Today SIG announced the new MCX-SPEAR-LT, the latest evolution of the XM5 rifle rifle that won the Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon competition. The MCX-SPEAR-LT rifles — basically Gen3 MCX guns — will replace SIG’s Virtus line.

Elsea: An Iowa State Gun is a Better Idea Than Protecting Second Amendment Rights

Mon, 09/19/2022 - 08:00

Iowa Republican legislators are asking us to troop to the polls Nov. 8 and vote “yes” on their “right to keep and bear arms” amendment. Forty-four other states already have fortified their constitutions that way, they say.

Not exactly. Iowa’s salute to the Second Amendment adds cryptic language that makes it dangerous. It wards off infringement by liberal judges. Only Louisiana, Alabama and Missouri have gone that far. So read up on Iowa’s amendment before voting.

It’s Time to Hold Your School Officials Accountable For Security

Sun, 09/18/2022 - 16:00

The school year is back in session for tens of millions of American children, including my twin boys. Keenly aware of security considerations, I like what I see at my kids’ school. Do you know much about your kids’ school…or grandkids for you older folks?

As parents, we expect these schools to proactively mitigate risk and keep our kids safe while they’re there. When visiting the school, if you as a layperson see obvious security weak points like unlocked exterior doors during school hours, there may be other issues that you didn’t notice.

After 25 Years in Prison a Kentucky School Shooter Who Killed Three and Wounded Five Will Get a Chance at Parole

Sun, 09/18/2022 - 10:00

By Travis Loller, AP

When 14-year-old Michael Carneal opened fire on his fellow students during a before-school prayer meeting in 1997, school shootings were not yet a part of the national consciousness. The carnage that left three students dead and five more injured at Heath High School, near Paducah, Kentucky, ended when Carneal put down his weapon and the principal walked him to the school office — a scene that seems unimaginable today.

Sociology Students’ First Range Trips Expand Minds, Broaden Horizons

Sun, 09/18/2022 - 08:00

Before going on this [range] trip, I mentioned it to a few of my friends and family. Most of them either didn’t believe me or thought I was joking. When I told them it was true and I was really going to a shooting range, I got a nearly identical response across the board; “You might be the last person I would ever expect to do that.”

This sentiment was one that even I shared myself.

Peeping Tom Pulls a Knife, Texas Dad Pulls a Gun

Sat, 09/17/2022 - 13:00

What happens when dear old dad discovers a pervy peeping Tom outside his teen daughter’s bedroom? On a good day, it’s a recipe for an extra-judicial tuneup. In San Antonio on Wednesday evening, dad rushed outside to “counsel” the alleged offender. But seeing a red-faced, angry dad approaching, Tom reportedly pulled a knife.

At that point dad reached for his carry piece (hint: this why you carry every day) and cracked off a couple of shots, apparently missing the knife-wielding creeper.

NSSF Condemns US Fish & Wildlife Ban of Traditional Ammo in Wildlife Refuges

Sat, 09/17/2022 - 10:00

From the NSSF . . .

NSSF, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, denounced the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) Final Rule that offered hunters a “bait-and-switch” deal that banned the use of traditional ammunition for opening 18 national wildlife refuges for new hunting and fishing opportunities.

USFWS claimed it “remains concerned that lead ammunition and fishing tackle have negative impacts on both human health and wildlife.” It also warned hunters that the future use on additional USFWS lands were open to evaluation.

Eric Adams Wants to Name, Shame and Blame Gun Industry CEOs for NYC’s Violent Crime Problem

Sat, 09/17/2022 - 08:00

When a gun crime is committed, we need the name of the gun and how that gun was obtained by the shooter. Who looked the other way. Where it was bought and who profited from that sale. Following the money is how you get to the heart of the story.

Gun violence is no exception.

Guns don’t magically appear in the hands of shooters.

Companies selling 80% receivers and other homemade firearm parts have been getting uncomfortable calls and questions from their credit card firms and payment processors. Their ability to process payments could soon end, they’re being told.

Grid Defense, formerly Ghost Firearms, which is located in Daytona Beach, Florida, got a call from their Mastercard payment processor Wednesday.

“We were told we may be violating some of their policies regarding ATF’s new frame and receiver rule,” said TJ, co-owner of Grid Defense.
