South Carolina Death Row Inmate Chooses a Firing Squad Over the Electric Chair for April 29 Execution

Fri, 04/15/2022 - 14:00

By Michelle Liu, AP

A South Carolina prisoner scheduled to be the first man executed in the state in more than a decade has decided to die by firing squad rather than in the electric chair later this month, according to court documents filed Friday.

Richard Bernard Moore, 57, is the also first state prisoner to face the choice of execution methods after a law went into effect last year making electrocution the default and giving inmates the option to face three prison workers with rifles instead.

When Doctors and Data Reveal That the Focus Should Be On People, Not Guns

Fri, 04/15/2022 - 12:00

By Robert B. Young, MD

Too often we still hear that guns are the problem. For example, esteemed Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s Tweet (“light footing” it around her responsibility for Chicago’s safe streets): “We have a common enemy: it’s guns & the violence they bring.”

Yet there has been a gradual shift in messaging by our distinguished gun control competition. In recent years, they’ve backed off somewhat from their longtime gun ban and confiscation demands and moved more toward restrictions around the edges.

Grand Rapids Police Release Video of Fatal Shooting of Patrick Lyoya

Thu, 04/14/2022 - 10:00

By Anna Liz Nichols and Ed White, AP

A black man face-down on the ground was fatally shot in the back of the head by a Michigan police officer, the violent climax of a traffic stop, brief foot chase and struggle over a stun gun, according to videos of the April 4 incident.

Patrick Lyoya, 26, was killed outside a house in Grand Rapids. The white officer repeatedly ordered Lyoya to “let go” of his Taser, at one point demanding: “Drop the Taser!”

Citing a need for transparency, the city’s new police chief, Eric Winstrom, on Wednesday released four videos, including critical footage of the shooting recorded by a passenger in Lyoya’s car on that rainy morning.

Why You Won’t Be Hearing Much More About (Alleged) Subway Shooter Frank R. James

Thu, 04/14/2022 - 08:00

This is the wrong sort of lunatic for the mainstream media’s taste. He doesn’t help them politically. A guy who looks like that is supposed to be a victim, not an aggressor. So they’ll find a way to either excuse it or dismiss it, and then they’ll get back to maligning their preferred enemies.

Remember when that maniac in an SUV plowed down a bunch of old ladies and children at a Christmas parade in Wisconsin last year?

Gun Review: Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 Optics Ready Slide in 10mm

Wed, 04/13/2022 - 16:00

Sitting in the brush, snuggled tight with the ticks, I was failing to entice a tom when a single boar came running forward out of the cedar. Maybe he was hungry, or maybe he identified as a Rio, but a draw, a single shot and a short blood trail later, I had meat on the ground.

I was hunting for a turkey with a shotgun. I shot a pig with a pistol. That pistol was the new Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 in 10mm.

Czechs Train Ukrainian Civilians to Use AK-47s, Kill Russian Soldiers

Wed, 04/13/2022 - 14:00

By Karel Janicek, AP

Of the first four shots Olha Dembitska fired from an AK-47 assault rifle in her life, one hit the target.

“It’s pretty difficult the first time,” the 22-year-old Ukrainian woman acknowledged.

On this occasion, the target was the shape of a human body at a shooting range in the Czech Republic. Next time, it might be for real, in Ukraine, and the target could be one of the Russian troops who have invaded her homeland.

Frank R. James, Suspect in Brooklyn Subway Shooting, Has Been Arrested

Wed, 04/13/2022 - 13:22

By Jennifer Peltz, Michael R. Sisak and Michael Balsamo, AP

A man who posted numerous social media videos decrying the U.S. as a racist place awash in violence and recounting his struggle with mental illness was arrested Wednesday afternoon, a day after an attack on a subway train in Brooklyn left 10 people wounded by gunfire.

Frank R. James, 62, was taken into custody in Manhattan’s East Village neighborhood, law enforcement officials who weren’t authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity told The Associated Press.

The Brooklyn Subway Attack Just Unraveled the Gun Control Argument Presented in NYSRPA v. Bruen

Wed, 04/13/2022 - 12:00

The attack that occurred in New York City subway yesterday is proof positive that gun control, as envisioned by the Gun Control Industry and like-minded politicians, simply does not work. Honest, hard-working people were going about their day in Brooklyn, headed to work. Thanks to the intransigence of their local and state governments, these people were completely disarmed, left to the mercy of someone who’d planned his attack to do the most damage possible.

“First responders” were too late to do anything about the shooting.

Villanueva: Violence Puts People in Jail in Los Angeles, Not Racism

Wed, 04/13/2022 - 11:00

[O]n his first day in office, Gascon issued a memo listing 13 crimes that the District Attorney’s Office no longer would prosecute, including driving without a valid license, drug possession, loitering to commit prostitution, resisting arrest, and trespassing.

The results of such changes are “creating a dystopian society as we speak,” [Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex] Villanueva said at the Heritage event.

Violent crime in Los Angeles is up over 11% since Gascon’s election, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

ATF Based Its Crackdown on ‘Ghost Guns’ on Data It Knew Was Faulty

Wed, 04/13/2022 - 09:00

By Lee Williams

Joe Biden repeated some of his most discredited lies about the Second Amendment Monday during a press conference held in the Rose Garden – deer in Kevlar vests, fictitious prohibitions on the right to keep and bear arms, including cannons – but it’s the actions he’s taking that are the most worrisome, because they’re all based upon a hoax by the ATF.

Without any congressional action and based solely on the flimsy authority of an executive order, Joe Biden is disarming Americans.

New York Police Hunting for Frank R. James, Suspect in Yesterday’s Brooklyn Subway Attack

Wed, 04/13/2022 - 07:37

By Jennifer Pelz, Michael R. Sisak and Michael Balsamo, AP

Police continued to hunt Wednesday for the gunman who opened fire on a subway train in Brooklyn, an attack that left 10 people shot and once again interrupted New York City’s long journey to post-pandemic normalcy.

The search focused partly on a man who police say rented a van possibly connected to Tuesday’s violence.

Investigators stressed they weren’t sure whether the man, Frank R.

What Gun for Car-Driving, Cheetos-Loving Javelinas?

Tue, 04/12/2022 - 16:00

From the AP

A hungry javelina in Arizona ended up going for a drive when it became trapped inside an empty car and bumped it into neutral.

Deputies in Yavapai County responded to a call last week in Cornville, a community 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of Sedona, about a javelina stuck in a Subaru station wagon. Javelinas are pig-like animals that are native to desert environments.

After speaking with the car’s owner and other residents, they determined the car’s hatchback had been left open overnight.

Joe Biden Just Can’t Stop Lying About Firearms, the Second Amendment, and Gun Control

Tue, 04/12/2022 - 14:00

From the CCRKBA . . .

Once again during his remarks about the newest attempt to restrict gun rights, President Joe Biden repeated his already-discredited claim that the Second Amendment historically prevented certain people from buying guns or owning cannons, leaving the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms to encourage Americans to question anything Biden says.

Near the end of his remarks, Biden stated, “From the very beginning, the Second Amendment didn’t say you could own any gun you want and big as you want.

UPDATE: At Least 10 Shot in Brooklyn Subway After Gunman Filled Train With Smoke

Tue, 04/12/2022 - 12:15

By Karen Matthews and Michael R. Sisak, AP

At least five people were shot and injured Tuesday at a New York City subway station during a morning rush hour attack that left wounded commuters bleeding on a train platform and police searching for the shooter.

Fire personnel responding to reports of smoke at the 36th Street station in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood at around 8:30 a.m. found at least 13 people were hurt, but — aside from the five shot — there were no details on what those injuries entailed.

Obscure Object of Desire: Winchester Model 1911 SL Shotgun

Tue, 04/12/2022 - 12:00

If you’ve followed any of my writing, you know I’m a shotgun nerd. I ran across the Winchester Model 1911 SL shotgun when I was doing some research into firearms I consider dangerous to the shooter. Nicknamed the Widowmaker, this shotgun is a very early example of a semi-auto shotgun. The Winchester Model 1911 SL was designed by a man named T.C. Johnson, and he had the assignment of designing a gun around John Browning’s Auto 5 patent.
