UPDATE: Editor of Michael Bloomberg’s The Trace Denies Bait-and-Switch in Less Lethal Gun Story

Tue, 11/07/2023 - 14:00

By Lee Williams

Tali Woodward, Bob Woodward’s daughter and editor-in-chief of Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun agitprop factory The Trace, says there’s a simple reason why her freelance reporter Ted Alcorn told a gun maker he was writing a story for Wired, which was later published by The Trace.

“As frequently happens in journalism, Alcorn reported the story on a freelance assignment from one publication (Wired) and wound up publishing it another (The Trace),” Tali Woodward said in an email Monday.

ATF Director Publicly Calls for Universal Background Checks and an ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban

Tue, 11/07/2023 - 12:00

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Director Steven Dettelbach pledged to Congress during his nomination hearing that he’d “use the tools Congress gives me,” and committed to “being a fair regulator” of the firearm industry in his role.

That was welcomed after President Joe Biden’s first nominee, gun control lobbyist David Chipman, was withdrawn after a disastrous nomination hearing of his own. However, recent comments by Director Dettelbach delivered at Harvard University, where he was a keynote guest, are worrisome.

Supreme Court Hears Arguments in US v. Rahimi Today, Balancing Gun Rights and Due Process

Tue, 11/07/2023 - 10:00

Morgan Marietta, University of Texas at Arlington

Should it be legal to take away the guns of people who are under a domestic violence protective order, which aims to shield victims from their abusers?

That’s the question posed in one of the biggest cases of the current Supreme Court term, focused on the limits of individual gun rights, which will be argued before the justices today.

The case, U.S.

Father of Highland Park Shooter Pleads Guilty to Seven Misdemeanor Counts of Reckless Conduct

Mon, 11/06/2023 - 11:35

Earlier this year, Robert Crimo, Jr., the father of alleged Highland Park killer Robert Crimo, III, was indicted on seven felony counts of reckless conduct. Prosecutors alleged that the father should have known that his son was a danger and had allegedly threatened violence when he helped the then-19-year-old purchase firearms.

The charges against the father were based on the fact that Crimo, Jr. had sponsored his son’s Illinois FOID card application in 2019.

Bookman: Politicians Know the Problem is Guns, But They Refuse to Acknowledge It

Mon, 11/06/2023 - 08:00

People in Great Britain, Japan, Australia and many other countries with low murder rates – they have the same human hearts that we do, right? I’m pretty sure the human heart is standard equipment, regardless of national borders. Yet those countries have nowhere near the murder rate that we do. Is Johnson telling us that American hearts are somehow different, that our hearts are more cruel and bloodthirsty than hearts in other countries?

Is that why God hath forsaken us?

Why Firearm and Self Defense Training are Worth Your Time and Money

Sun, 11/05/2023 - 13:00

I’ve written a number of posts on training, including classes that use force-on-force, which elaborated on some of the most effective forms of self-defense training available to civilians today. In response, there always seems to be a commenter or two criticizing civilian firearms training for a host of reasons. One went as far as to call me an unscrupulous a-hole collecting a ton of money teaching pure, unadulterated, uh, merde.

Things That Don’t Suck: Otis Pro+ AR-15 Lock Block Upper Receiver Vise Block

Sun, 11/05/2023 - 10:00

I’ve done a fair bit of AR builds and mods over the years culminating with a flurry of them this summer. I’ve used an old plastic clam shell upper receiver block, and for the most part it’s been fine. I’ve occasionally run into an upper profile that doesn’t fit the block though, and more recently had a couple barrels that must have been torqued on by gorillas. I could see the aluminum upper flexing in the vise and backed off before I damaged something.

Now Out: Paul Markel’s ‘How to Shoot Better than a Navy SEAL’

Sat, 11/04/2023 - 13:00

The latest book to be published by prolific author and friend of TTAG Paul Markel is How to Shoot Better than a Navy SEAL. As Markel writes in his introduction . . .

I began my official journey toward handgun mastery at the tender age of 19. Note I said that ‘I bagan my journey’, my journey is not yet complete. As we like to say, ‘you are a beginner once, a student for life’ at least that is how you should look at it.

So Much Coping and Seething as the Supreme Court Decides to Take Up the Trump Bump Stock Ban

Sat, 11/04/2023 - 10:00

As we covered earlier, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case challenging Trump’s bumpstock ban. Given that this is a court with the same people on it that gave us NYSRPA v. Bruen, the anti-gun fake left is understandably not happy. They think they know how it’s going to go, and they don’t like it. At all.

But, as the old saying goes, sometimes it’s better to keep your mouth shut and let people wonder whether you’re stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

BREAKING: Supreme Court Grants Cert, Will Hear Case Challenging Trump’s Bump Stock Ban

Fri, 11/03/2023 - 13:20

Time to lay in a heavier supply of popcorn. Today the Supreme Court granted cert in Garland v. Cargill, the case challenging the Trump era bump stock ban. The about face by the ATF following the Las Vegas mass shooting came at the direction of the Trump administration. ATF, which had previously approved sales of bump fire stocks as legal accessories used regulatory fiat to do a 180 and reclassify them as machine guns.

The Supreme Court’s hand was forced here by a circuit court split.

Gun Tweet of the Day: James Patterson’s Deep, Unedited Thoughts on ‘Assault Weapons’

Fri, 11/03/2023 - 12:57

I write about assault weapons more than I’d like to. I believe their place is in the hands of law officers and our military. I honestly don’t see why anyone else needs to have a machine gun. I’m 99.999% sure that Tom Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Washington, and the Adams boys did not…

Fri, 11/03/2023 - 10:00

The gradual slide in gun sales may have reached a bottom. The NSSF’s adjusted background check numbers for October was up more than 8% from the year-ago total. In other words, the gun industry may have found the new post-pandemic floor in the demand for guns.

News of war in Israel and threats of violence in the U.S. may well have contributed to the October increase. Here’s what the NSSF’s Mark Oliva had to say about the figures .
