New GLOCK pistols at the 2015 SHOT Show Industry Day at the Range

Tue, 01/20/2015 - 14:47

GLOCK had their new pistols on hand for media members and industry reps to try at  yesterday’s 2015 SHOT Show Industry Day at the Range.

While the new 10mm long-slide pistol and other models had been leaked by a premature distributor announcement, there was still speculation that the company might release a single-stack 9mm at this year’s SHOT Show.

While there was no compact nine in the lineup, GLOCK rep Kiel Wagner explains the features and advantages of the company’s new offerings in this short video.

Smith & Wesson New Products at the 2015 SHOT Show Range Day

Tue, 01/20/2015 - 13:58

Smith & Wesson had several new products on hand at yesterday’s Shot Show 2015 Industry Day at the Range.

The gun maker expanded its offerings in the concealed carry and competition markets and, as an example of how suppressors are becoming more mainstream, introduced some can-ready pistols.

Watch the short video for a rundown of some the company’s new guns from a S&W rep.

Winchester Deer Season XP – First-Ever Deer-Specific Hunting Bullet

Tue, 01/20/2015 - 11:10

When it comes to deer hunting bullets, expansion is usually the name of the game. Some of the most widely-used hunting bullets were designed 50 and 60 years ago, when deer hunting was much less prevalent than it is now – simply because we didn’t have very many deer. At the SHOT Show 2015 Range Day, I had the chance to talk about it with Winchester Ammunition‘s Mike Stock.

HECS Stealthscreen Clothing – Hide Your Electrical Signal From Game

Tue, 01/20/2015 - 09:11

As I walked the gravel at SHOT Show 2015 Range Day, I stopped in to see what was being touted in a certain booth. “HECS Stealthscreen – the Evolution of Concealment.” Er, what?

Mon, 01/19/2015 - 23:22

If you’re looking for a well-made, all-American bolt-action rifle with a lifetime guarantee – the gun’s lifetime, that is – and a guarantee of sub-MOA accuracy, you’d do well to take a look at the rifles being made by Legendary Arms Works (LAW).

Breakthrough Advanced Firearms Cleaning Technology

Mon, 01/19/2015 - 19:12

This stuff looks like it has great potential, and I’ll definitely be putting my hands on some to test in depth – but for now let’s look at what it is and what the manufacturer says it’ll do.

James River Armory’s Bullpup M1A/M14 Prototype

Mon, 01/19/2015 - 18:34

The coolest gun that I saw at the SHOT 2015 Range Day was hands-down the above bullpup conversion for the M1A/M14. James River Armory is a company that specializes in restoring classic military firearms, and they got a booth at Range Day mainly to show off their SAGE EBR clone. The company’s founder is an M14 purist and prefers wooden stocks only, so their SAGE stock was a leap for him, and the bullpup… well, it was a prototype that they had on-hand so they put it out on the table.

Hands-on with H&K’s MR556A1 Competition Rifle

Mon, 01/19/2015 - 17:47

I stopped by the H&K booth at SHOT 2015 Range Day and put a few rounds through the company’s $3,100 MR556A1 Competition rifle. The gun was topped with an Elcan SpecterDR, truth be told I was more interested in checking out the optic than I was the gun.

Hands-on with the Silencerco Salvo 10

Mon, 01/19/2015 - 17:21

I feel like I’m the last person in the gun press to actually shoot Silencerco’s famed shotgun silencer, but I was glad to get my turn at the SHOT 2015 Range Day. We got a walkthrough of the function an design of the Salvo (video to follow soon), and then I proceeded to shoot a few rounds out of a Benelli M2 without ear protection.

Launching a Grenade with the LMT M203

Mon, 01/19/2015 - 17:03

I stopped by the LMT booth at the SHOT 2015 Range Day, butI didn’t shoot any of the rifles. Why? Because, aside from some nifty color options, they didn’t have any LMT rifles on display that I don’t already own a version of. I did, however, get to shoot a grenade launcher — LMT’s M203 mounted on an L2H1PG frame assembly.

The frame assembly has a leaf sight mounted on top of a picatinny rail, and its function is to give you a way to shoot the M203 without having to first attach it to the underside of an M4 (i.e. the standard way to shoot it).

I’m definitely not cut out for a career as a grenadier. It’s not so much that I missed the target — rather, I missed the entire range. I managed to lob the grenade all the way over the range’s distant backstop. Oh well, there’s always next year.

Ontario’s Pelee Island is Smallmouth Bass Paradise

Mon, 01/19/2015 - 08:32

Less than 10 minutes running out of Dicks Marina we slowed the boat 200 yards off a rocky point of Pelee Island, Ontario. The depth finder showed a broad 30-foot deep flat that suddenly rose to 25, 20 then topped out at 16 feet on an irregular, rocky hump. Spotted here and there on the fathometer screen in 16 to 20 foot depths were inverted “Vs” — marks showing the presence of fish.

How to Deal with Bad Weather when Deer Hunting

Sat, 01/17/2015 - 19:01

Deer hunting seasons are far from over in the South. However, being January now, we are into what regional hunters laughingly refer to as the “monsoon” season. January and February are typically our coldest, windiest, and most assuredly our rainiest.

SHOT Show 2015: Cold Steel’s Bold New Lineup

Sat, 01/17/2015 - 18:43

The annual Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show starts this weekend and we here at AllOutdoor have your back.  The show is in Vegas, but if you can’t make it (like me) or you want some concise analysis, here is a good start.  I did this last year and evaluated the lineups from knife, multitool, and flashlight companies.  I’ll run through some of the new releases and then give a letter grade to the showing.  Its not particularly objective, but it gives you a sense of how the line up compares to the competition and to previous years’ showings.  Up first, with a massive number of new things, is Cold Steel.
