Video: Canadians Combine Clay Shooting and Hockey to Make Best Sport Ever

Thu, 03/12/2015 - 08:35

I'm not sure whether this video posted by Danielle Bergen is the most Canadian thing I've ever seen or the most awesome thing I've ever seen (or whether there is even a difference between the two). There isn't much to say other than that. It's clay shooting and hockey. What else do you need? https://youtu.be/rlxmevufILI...

Video: Watch These 5 Men Clean and Gut Deer in Just Minutes

Thu, 03/12/2015 - 08:21

Ever wonder how the professionals process your deer? Well, it's a lot different than field dressing a deer in the woods, where you have to worry more about contamination, having enough light to see, or in the worst-case scenario, the loss of your knife. In the cutting room of a processor, professional deer cleaners have more tools at their disposal---and years of skill wielding a blade. Watch these five men race to complete their deer cleaning in as little time as possible. As always, speed by itself doesn't necessarily mean a good job, and more time usually means more attention paid to...

Video: Hunter Sneaks Up On Sleeping Deer

Thu, 03/12/2015 - 08:04

What would you do if you ever came across a sleeping deer? Despite their reputation as skittish creatures, it seems that some deer are actually heavy sleepers. This hunter can't believe his luck when he comes across a young deer in the middle of a nap. Despite his attempts to wake it, the critter seems perfectly happy to keep on sleeping---at least until the hunter gets too close. https://youtu.be/hOjwEp4IpSE...

Idaho Completes Cull of 19 Wolves, Seeks Funds to Bolster Program

Thu, 03/12/2015 - 07:58

Idaho Fish and Game announced on Monday that the department has concluded a wolf cull in the state's northern Lolo zone, ending with 19 wolves killed. The aerial cull was carried out to help mitigate the effects of wolf predation on the region's plummeting elk population. Surveys in 1989 pegged Lolo's elk population at 16,000 animals, butin 2010 only 2,000 remained. Officials now believe that only 1,000 elk still live along the state's northern border with Montana. There are a number of causes for the...

Louisiana Angler Catches Alligator Snapping Turtle on Rod and Reel

Wed, 03/11/2015 - 15:01

For most anglers, the appearance of an alligator snapping turtle often means that your fish is about to be stolen. For David Nero of Grand Coteau, however, it just means a change in bait. According to the Opelousas Daily World, the angler caught a huge 120-pound snapping turtle from the waters of Bayou Teche last Wednesday. Nero said he had been hunting for the turtle ever since he first ran into it two months ago during another fishing trip. At that time, he was unable...

Photos: Cameras Record Lives of Mountain Lion Cubs, Deer Meal

Wed, 03/11/2015 - 13:25

For much of 2014, remote cameras in California's Santa Monica Mountains silently recorded footage of wildlife prowling the chaparral-covered landscape. Lured in by the prospect of a deer dinner, many of the photos taken were of the area's small mountain lion population, including one mother and her two cubs. Park officials recently released photos of the cougar family tearing into a deer carcass---and as cute as the cubs may seem, they do not mind baring their fangs when venison is on the menu. The photos are of a cat, designated P-19 by park officials, and her two cubs, P-33 and...

Video: Deer Collision Sends Longboarder Skidding down Road

Wed, 03/11/2015 - 11:27

Longboarder Jared Henry probably wasn't expecting a deer to knock him right off his board, but this athlete decided to roll with it. Henry was filming a brand video for Fayettechill Clothing Company in the Ozarks when he discovered a sudden need for his safety equipment. Fayettechill Clothing Company wrote in the description: Before this run, the sun was setting and the air was getting colder by the minute. Because of this Jared threw on his Local Dave button-down before he started his ride. It was a clutch idea because minutes later he was sliding on pavement on his stomach at 40...

America’s 5 Greatest Fishing Presidents

Wed, 03/11/2015 - 08:29

It can be said that no other sport enjoys as much popularity in the White House as fishing does. Just about every American president, from Washington to Obama, has at some point taken the time during their term to cast a line. It's a tradition so ingrained in the office that it has become practically expected, and many presidents take it up as a beneficial photo opportunity. Others, however, can't wait to make an excuse to go fishing. There are few occasions that put politics aside like a quiet day at the stream, and with the stress that comes with being the leader of the free world, it is no...

Video: 3D-printed Lower Receiver for a Škorpion vz. 61

Wed, 03/11/2015 - 08:10

The Škorpion vz. 61 is a very recognizable submachine gun that garnered a following due to its representation in video games and movies. First designed in 1959, this Czechoslovak firearm is also available in semiautomatic versions. However, the semiautomatic variants can be a bit hard to find, and unless you are capable of milling your own lower receiver for one, many fans will have a difficult time getting their hands on a working Škorpion. That is, unless you know how to work a 3D printer. The enthusiasts in this video used a demilled receiver to design their blueprint for...

Video: This is What a Happy Buffalo Looks Like

Wed, 03/11/2015 - 07:49

Buffalo are easy to please, especially if you drive by them with tasty treats. These women found out the messy way that feeding buffalo may not be a smart idea, even if it is within the relative safety of their car and in the world-famous Olympic Game Farm. The tantalizing prospect of more bread even had one buffalo shoving its face through an open window and vigorously licking one of the passengers. Let's hope that they don't mind buffalo saliva too much. http://youtu.be/HK4cjWvkml8...

Angler Reels in Massive 38-pound Brown Trout in Arkansas Waters

Tue, 03/10/2015 - 15:36

It may not be a state record, but it is close. On February 27, Calvin Johnston caught a 38-pound, seven-ounce brown trout from the White River near Cotter, Arkansas. According to the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission, it is the largest brown trout ever caught from that river, and the third largest ever taken in the state. "This is just further evidence that anglers still have the opportunity to catch trophy fish on Arkansas's world-class trout waters," said Christy Graham, the state trout management program coordinator. It's not...

Canadian Man Fights Grizzly with Ski Pole to Save Wife, Receives Medal of Bravery

Tue, 03/10/2015 - 12:57

Last Friday, Peter Richard Moody stood alongside 39 other Canadians in Ottawa's Rideau Hall as they were presented with Medals of Bravery by Governor General David Johnston. First created in 1972, the Medal of Bravery recognizes people who undertake extraordinary actions to save or protect the lives of others, almost always at the risk of their own. Some of the other recipients were police officers and firefighters who had pulled people out of burning vehicles or had climbed up buildings to rescue trapped victims. Others, like Moody, were average Canadians who found themselves thrust into a...

The 5 Best Pocket Carry Handguns

Tue, 03/10/2015 - 12:07

Pocket carry exposes the eighth great mystery of the universe: it’s much easier to put a gun in your pocket than to take it out. It makes sense when you think about it: when you go to draw a pocket-carry handgun, your hand is wrapped around it in a firing grip, so the entire package is much, much bigger. It’s kind of like trying to grab a candy bar out of a vending machine through the main door. For this reason, I’m adding a major subjective criteria to the selection process of determining this "top five" list: ease of draw. If you can’t get your pocket gun out of your pocket...

How We Treat Heroes: Soldier Injured in Fort Hood Massacre Takes Dream Elk Hunt

Tue, 03/10/2015 - 08:31

On November 5, 2009, Staff Sergeant Patrick Zeigler was sitting in Fort Hood's Soldier Readiness Processing Center after returning from his second deployment to Iraq. He was thinking about his future, his family, and waiting for word from Officer Candidate School, which he wanted to attend. He was not thinking about spending the rest of his life with a limp or how he would have to relearn how to walk four different times, nor did he fear that he couldn't be the father that he always wanted to be. He also did not expect an attack from someone wearing a US Army uniform not unlike the very one...

Video: Miniature Guns That Actually Shoot

Tue, 03/10/2015 - 07:53

According to Arsenal Firearms, their tradition of building miniature working firearms first started in 1810 under the patronage of the Russian Tsars. These half-scale or smaller firearms were perfectly capable of being shot, and were often considered the very pinnacle of a gunsmith's ability. Of course, like a fine watch with many intricate parts, these miniatures were very hard to build and assemble. Even those crafted by the dedicated artisans at Arsenal face one big drawback: there is no ammunition designed to be fired out of these tiny firearms. That is, at least until Larry Vickers of...

The argument quickly escalates as one of the cubs decides to take off with the fish, leaving its mom and sibling in hot pursuit. The weary-looking mother gives a halfhearted chase before resigning herself to another long day. http://youtu.be/gXPRIR8G8lw...

A Profile of a “Hipster Hunter,” the Next Generation of Conservationists

Mon, 03/09/2015 - 15:29

In a recent article for Sporting Classics, JR Sullivan examined the rise of so-called "hipster hunters"---typically digitally-inclined, 25- to 35-year-old professionals who embody the "locavore" movement---and mainstream perception of the newfound sportsmen and women, and their relation to their "traditional" roots. But is “hipster hunter” the applicable title for this new generation of 20-somethings who hunt? And who are they specifically? Nikita Dahlke is 27 years old. She loves...

Boone and Crockett Club Announces New World Record Bighorn Sheep

Mon, 03/09/2015 - 14:00

The Boone and Crockett Club announced last week that a bighorn sheep killed in an automobile accident near Longview, Alberta has snatched up the world record. The horns were retrieved by a local rancher and scored 209 4/8 inches, beating out the previous hunter-harvested record holder, which measured 208 3/8. That ram was taken by Guinn D. Crousen in Luscar Mountain, Alberta in 2000. Boone and Crockett has long held their coveted world records for any animal worthy of the title, whether hunted or...
