Mon, 03/23/2015 - 15:22

What does a beer with a staggering 55 percent alcohol content have in common with a taxidermied squirrel? Well, almost nothing, unless you are talking about what was at one point both the world's strongest and most expensive bottle of beer. Brewed by BrewDog of Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire in Scotland, the "End of History" is a unique blonde Belgian ale infused with nettles from the nearby Scottish Highlands and juniper berries. Only 12 bottles were ever made, with 11 going to retail at about $750 each. Much of that cost is...

Video: You Need a Machete to Cut This Monster Morel Mushroom

Mon, 03/23/2015 - 14:50

We're not sure if machetes should be included in your morel hunting equipment, but sometimes a mushroom knife simply doesn't cut it. This huge 13-incher was found by Chris Matherly in Georgia in 2010, and it is a stunning example of just how large morels can grow. Although uncommon, it is not unknown for some types of morels to grow over 10 inches in length. That's going to make a lot of omelets. https://youtu.be/vEcOlzwfiwE...

Missouri Angler Catches Biggest Fish in State History

Mon, 03/23/2015 - 11:58

Missouri's list of state record fish now has a new heavyweight, and it belongs to Andy Belobraydic of Richwoods. On Saturday, Belobraydic landed a 140-pound, 8.8-ounce paddlefish at the Bridgeport Resort on Cape Fair. According to KY3, the fish was snagged on a single, one-inch, unbaited hook in the north end of Table Rock Lake. Since paddlefish are filter-feeders that rarely hit a lure, snagging is still the most common method of capture for these large...

Mon, 03/23/2015 - 10:50

This "angler" was dangling his arm off a pier somewhere in Florida with the hopes of catching a fish. He got a little more than he bargained for when a monster fish leapt from from the water and clamped onto his arm. After watching the video it appears as thought the fish was trying to drag him back into the water for a snack. We would advise against trying this at home since the the bite from this fish drew blood. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nv1MG_ya7lY...

Mon, 03/23/2015 - 10:18

What would you do if you found yourself surrounded by 15 wolves in the heart of the Montana wilderness, with nothing more than your bow? On a hunt several years ago, Elk Hunter editor Remi Warren found himself encircled by what appeared to be two packs of black wolves, and he approached it as a unique opportunity. "That was insane," Warren told the camera after the packs passed by. "They're still howling. There had to been---I don't know how many wolves. We were completely surrounded." Needless to say, when there are that many wolves in the area, the hunters had more on their...

One of the most commonly asked questions from gun owners---or those who want to be gun owners---is how to buy a used gun. What kind of gun holds onto its value the best? Should I buy it online and have it shipped, or buy it from a gun show? What is a good price for a specific gun? What should I look for in wear and tear? Buying a used firearm is a good way to cut down on cost, but it comes with many hurdles that don't come with factory fresh guns. If you're lucky and smart, you'll be able to come out with a bargain. Let's face it, animals generally have way better reflexes than humans. After all, they have to survive in a world full of ways to get hurt, and even the slightest injury in the wild could mean the end. That said, we usually don't expect wild animals to dodge bullets. Not only would it make hunting a lot harder, there's just something downright creepy about it. This bobcat manages to dodge not one, but two bullets that came within a hair's breadth of hitting it. Thu, 03/19/2015 - 13:10

How do you feel after a hunt? Exhilarated? Hungry? Just plain tired? According to a study by researchers at UC Santa Barbara, male hunters returning from the field may experience a sudden rise in oxytocin, the so-called "love hormone." This nickname is somewhat misleading since oxytocin not only promotes sexual arousal, but also a wide range of other benefits such as increasing sociability, reducing stress, reducing pain, healing wounds, and there is even some evidence of the hormone acting as anti-depressant. Overall, scientists say the hormone may make hunters more empathetic, which helps...
