Mad Gun Science: Is Birdshot Effective for Home Defense?
We gun folk are exceptionally guilty of repeating hearsay and assuming it’s truth. You know how it works. If some hypothetical scenario gets repeated enough, it becomes the truth.
This week’s Mad Gun Science experiment has to do with the idea of using birdshot for home defense. This one has two “hearsay” truths.
Birdshot is effective at short range because the shot acts like one big projectile before it has a chance to spread out too much.
Birdshot is not effective for home defense because the small and light pellets won’t penetrate enough to stop a determined home...
Video: Gun Control Activists Open Fake “Gun Store” in NYC, Lures in New Gun Buyers
An organization called States United to Prevent Gun Violence recently uploaded a video on YouTube where they claimed to open a fake gun store in the middle of New York City, luring in prospective gun buyers and seemingly discouraging them from purchasing firearms. Calling it a "social experiment," the video focuses on a gun store "owner" listing off disparaging statistics to would-be patrons, whose reactions were then captured by hidden cameras. Interestingly enough, the actor who plays the owner of the shop is none other than Ned Luke, who is best known for his role as the unrepentant...
Clash of the Apex Predators: 10 Encounters Between Bears and Wolves
As two of North America's greatest predators, perhaps no other animal rivalry is as famous as the one between bears and wolves. Whether in Yellowstone or the wilderness of Alaska, the clashes between these two powerful hunters are often of epic proportions. On one hand, the pure muscle of an adult brown bear is usually more than enough to intimidate even a confidant wolf pack. Yet a mix of agility, teamwork, and ferocity often tips the odds in the pack's favor. For millennia, bears and wolves have vied for dominance in the territories they share, pitting might and size against speed and sheer...
Texas Senate Passes Licensed Open Carry Bill
On Tuesday, the Texas Senate voted 20-10 in a final vote to pass Senate Bill 17, which would finally overturn the state's 140-year-old ban on open carry. However, the bill is not without opposition, even by some gun owners. As written, the bill will only allow concealed handgun license holders to practice open carry, whereas gun owners in many other states can carry guns openly without any kind of permit. Some gun rights advocates instead supported legislation that would grant constitutional carry---which allowed gun owners to open carry without a license---but those bills have yet to receive...
South Dakota Confirms New State Record Yellow Perch
South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks (GFP) confirmed last week that an Aurora angler managed to beat a 16-year-old state record for yellow perch.
"Congrats to Chase Jensen on his new state record yellow perch weighing in at 2 pounds 13 ounces; caught on Saturday up at Bitter Lake. Nice work!" GFP announced on Facebook.
Jenson caught the big perch from Bitter Lake in northeastern South Dakota on March 7, 2015. The state's previous record, which was also pulled from the same waters, weighed...
Colorado Senate Approves Bill to Repeal Magazine Limit
On Tuesday the Colorado Senate decided 21-13 in a voice vote to pass a bill that would repeal the state's 15-round limit on ammunition magazines. According to The Denver Post, the bill is now awaiting a final vote as early as this week before being sent to the House, where Speaker Dickey Lee Hullinghorst (D-Boulder) stated that it will not pass despite popular support from gun owners.
The magazine limit, which banned the sale of any magazine...
Video: Classic Fishing Show Bloopers
Famed angler and TV host Bill Dance is well known for his blooper outtakes, but it is also important to note that he also holds more than 23 National Bass fishing titles and is in two separate fishing halls of fame.
“I’ve got to be careful not to let this job turn into work,” Bill once famously quipped.
With a three-man camera crew, Bill shot 26 episodes a year, 30 minutes an episode, for more than three decades. It just goes to show that all of us make mistakes.
Hilarious, unforgettable mistakes.

Video: Shark Snatches Fish off Angler’s Line
There's few things more ominous than reeling in half a fish, especially when you know there's a shark in the area. Despite their status as the ocean's top predator (just don't mention that to the orcas) sharks are more than happy to steal from fishermen. After all, hunting is hungry work and who can refuse an easy lunch?
"Here he comes, what do we got? Just lift him up," advises a guide in the background.
The man barely had time to let out an "Oh no," before the shark decided that it wanted one more bite.

The 5 Most Ridiculous Things You Can Put on Your Picatinny Rail
Where would the gun industry be without accessories? From scopes to lasers, to grips, to bipods and bayonets and iPhone holders, it seems that you can mount just about anything short of the proverbial kitchen sink. The amount of accessories you can slap onto any given firearm is only limited by rail space, weight, and the size of your bank roll---and occasionally common sense. That said, there are perhaps some items that may earn you a few stares the next time you visit the range.
These are the five most ridiculous things you can actually buy for your Picatinny (or any other) rail. Keep...

Why Did Thousands of Snow Geese Drop out of the Sky over Idaho?
Should you duck and cover?
Idaho wildlife officials have confirmed that thousands of migrating snow geese are being found dead across the state, seemingly dropping straight out of the air. The carcasses were first discovered at Camas National Wildlife Refuge near Dubois last week, but soon spread to the towns of Terreton and Roberts, where birds on the return leg of their journey to Alaska have collapsed and died. The migration is one that the geese undertake every spring, so why are they dropping dead...
Arkansas Angler Breaks State Record with 105-pound Paddlefish
Arkansas wildlife officials announced last week that the state's paddlefish record has been shattered by a 105-pound fish that came out of Beaver Lake. The prehistoric-looking fish was caught by Jesse Wilkes of Springdale on a 30-pound-test line when he and his fishing buddy, Richard Wynne, were trolling for some eating-sized walleye. Unexpectedly, Wilkes snagged the massive paddlefish on its side. Since paddlefish are filter-feeders, snagging is the most common method of capture in Arkansas.
“Paddlefish strain plankton from the...
The BAREBOW! Chronicles: The Nevada Lottery-draw Tag, Part 1
No hunter can hope to claim the North American Super Slam without also taking the Grand Slam of the continent's four species of wild sheep. Undoubtedly---for a bowhunter, at least---the Grand Slam is the toughest part of the Super Slam to achieve. After the sheep, for a close next-most-difficult, my nominee would be the grizzly bear, which I had to hunt seven different times before my efforts were at last rewarded with success.
Since the Grand Slam is an integral part of the Super Slam, the reader will understand how excited I was in the spring of 1999 when Nevada outfitter Mike Hornbarger...

Video: Alaskan Man Plays with Overly Attached Wolverine
Pound for pound, wolverines are probably one of the deadliest animals in North America. It is not just all reputation---the wolverine is a ferocious predator that has been documented to take down prey as large as adult moose. For a critter that's only about 50 pounds, it goes beyond just simply impressive and into the territory of "see one and run in the opposite direction."
Steve Kroschel, however, just views the animal as another playmate. He runs the Kroschel Wildlife Center in Haines, Alaska, where he became acquainted with Banff the wolverine.
"I've worked with wolverines for almost...

Chinese Man Awarded $80,000 Following Panda Attack
A man in China's northwestern Gansu province has successfully sued local forestry officials after a botched panda capture drove one of the animals onto his property, which later ended up mauling him. According to Time, Guan Quanzhi has been awarded more than $80,000 in compensation for the attack, most of which will go toward his ongoing medical bills. The man was reported to have undergone a strenuous seven-hour surgery immediately following the attack last year.
Despite their 99 percent bamboo...
7 Military Surplus Guns Every American Should Own
The first gun that I ever bought was a Soviet Mosin-Nagant rifle made in 1942. It was also the first gun that I ever shot, which is probably why I had a flinch for quite some time after that (let that be a lesson---get some proper instruction and supervision if you're a first-time shooter). For many Americans, military surplus (“milsurp”) firearms are a gateway into the rabbit hole of the shooting sports and gun collecting in general. Many milsurp rifles and handguns are cheap, simple, and collectable.
Regardless of where your overall gun interests lie, chances are that you’ll end up...
