Video: Florida Woman Runs into Mountain Lion on Bridge
If you live in cougar territory and you enjoy hiking, there's a good chance that you've been close to a mountain lion and didn't even notice. Cougars are notoriously stealthy cats, and have on occasion given the odd hiker or hunter the scare of their lives. Yet in Florida, the cougar---or panther, as some call it---population is quite slim. That makes this encounter in the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary all the more unexpected. On Facebook, Tina Dorschel posted this video of her walking on what appeared to be an elevated path or bridge when she was suddenly faced with a running mountain lion....
Photos: The Oldest Flies Still in Existence
The American Museum of Fly Fishing is a great resource for anglers interested in the history of the sport. Next month, the museum will be holding a viewing of the Haslinger Breviary, considered by some to be one of the oldest texts on fly fishing. Written by Leonardus Haslinger, a priest in Austria, the text includes detailed instructions on 15th century fly-tying and fishing methods. However, unfortunately, the flies themselves cannot survive for nearly so long. The world's oldest surviving flies actually come from the Harris...
Video: The Full-Auto Belt-fed 12ga AR Upper
Here's the ultimate and impractical AR accessory you never knew you wanted.
If you ever wanted to shoot hundreds of rounds of 12ga out of your AR without reloading than this is the upper for you. According to its creator this upper attaches to a standard AR-15 lower receiver quickly turning it into a shotgun. If you happen to have a registered M 16 lower or a drop in auto sear it can quickly become 12 gauge belt-fed machine gun of your dreams.
As you can see in the video there are some feeding issues, but that's because it---at the time of filming in 2009---was still a...
The BAREBOW! Chronicles: The Three-Week-Early Hibernation Fiasco
My experience on Chichagof Island in 1978 had made me “gun-shy,” in more ways than one. “Guide-shy,” as well, perhaps. Not until the fall of 1999, more than 21 years later, did I leave home again for another attempt on the life of an Alaskan Brown Bear. That decision came as a result of attending the 1998 annual convention of the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep. While there, I met a gentleman by the name of Tom Kirstein. Tom is Master Guide #98 in the Land of the Midnight Sun, and since 1985, he has owned the Deadman Bay Hunting Area inside the Kodiak Island National Wildlife...

Video: Wolves Wait for Mortally Injured Elk to Die
Nature can sometimes be beautiful, and at other times, stunningly cruel. Two Bear Air Rescue in Whitefish, Montana recently captured aerial footage of a wolf pack waiting for an injured bull elk to die after attacking it near Glacier National Park. According to Rich Landers of The Spokesman Review, the elk appeared to have been severely---perhaps even mortally---wounded by the Camas Creek Pack shortly before the footage begins. Resigned to its fate, the bull moves...
PSA: You Do Not Need a “License” to Hunt Morel Mushrooms
Looks like the Facebook rumor mill is churning again and this time the topic is morels.
The Missouri Department of Conservation posted this photo of an alleged "morel hunting permit" last Friday as a warning to mushroom hunters. Apparently a rumor was going around Facebook claiming that in order to hunt for morels you needed a state license. The MDC clarified that you "DO NOT" need a license to hunt for morels in Missouri. The only case where you might need prior authorization is when you are morel hunting on private property. It's always a good idea to get permission from the land owner...
Rabbits Are No Pushovers, Even for a Trained Hawk
Falconry is tritely called “the sport of kings,” but it’s doubtful many kings ever tromped through thick brush and foot-deep snow to flush rabbits for their ever-vigilant red-tailed hawks.
No, those royals had serfs like me doing such work---and loving it. In fact, except for trading my shotgun for a camera and walking stick, my hawking hunt in January with Patrick and Kelly LaBarbera of Black River Falls resembled hundreds of other rabbit hunts I’ve made since childhood.
For this hunt, however, we left all hunting to Nala, the LaBarberas’ 5-year-old red-tailed hawk. As we...
Video: Creating the Notorious Bow Trap
An effective trap, or a bad idea?
There are plenty of survival traps out there that are both reliable, time-tested, and perhaps most importantly, legal. Then there is the bow trap, otherwise known---perhaps humorously---as the self bow. It functions very differently than most of the traps in common use today because it actually works by firing a projectile---in this case an arrow---to fatally wound or kill small game outright. Now obviously there are a number of issues with this kind of trap, such as the fact that it is not guaranteed to be fatal. Since the trap can't very well aim itself,...
Study Pinpoints 50 US Cities Vulnerable to the Zika Virus
If you are planning on being outside this summer, you may want to double up on the mosquito repellent. Earlier this year the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued travel warnings for US citizens planning on visiting countries affected by the Zika virus. However, researchers say it is only a matter of time before the virus enters the United States itself. So far 258 people in the country have been hospitalized with the virus, and experts say that with warming weather and an abundance of mosquitoes, conditions are favorable for the virus to spread. A recently published study...
Photos: Pictures of Kurt Cobain’s Browning Auto-5 Released for the First Time
Edit 3-21-2016: A closer look at the photos does reveal that the shotgun is actually a Remington Model 11, a variant of the Browning Auto-5 renamed by the gun maker in 1911 after it licensed the design and began producing it in 1906.
On Thursday the Seattle Police released for the first time photographs of Kurt Cobain's 20 gauge Browning Auto-5, which officials say was the weapon he used to commit suicide. Fans of the late Nirvana frontman have long called for the police department to release photos of the gun, along with numerous other evidence collected after Cobain was...
Video: Flying Jet Ski Destroys $3K Drone
The Yamaha New Zealand Festival of Freeride 2016 was the location for the fist ever drone-jet ski mid-air collision.
Photographer Guy Mac captured this impressive collision from a perfect angle. The jet ski rider launched off of a wave propelling him to the same height as the drone filming him. The jet ski crushed the $3,000 DJI Phantom drone and the ocean did it's part as well.
Skip to 3:45 for the crash footage.

Video: Homeowner Encounters Massive Bear Under Porch
We don't know about you, but if we ever discovered that a large black bear had taken up residence under our home, the last thing we'd want to do is antagonize it. That being said, this homeowner did manage to get some fascinating video of a bruin in its unnatural habitat. Bears have a habit of repurposing things for their use, especially when it comes to shelter. There have been plenty of reports where bears have broken into cabins and homes and used them as makeshift dens, but nobody wants a bear under their porch.
This is not the first time this has happened to this specific homeowner....
Video: The Game Cart That Transforms into a Hunting Chair
It's called the "Throne," and it's meant to take the place of both a multipurpose game cart and a hunting chair. Now, a lot of hunters may thumb their noses at this design, but the idea did receive some positive reception online, especially by older hunters. The Throne boasts a 500-pound capacity with an integrated shooting rest, smooth 360-degree rotation and no-tool-required operation.
"When the day is done, simply convert The Throne back into a game cart and easily haul your gear and game back to your vehicle or camp," Read more »
Video: Game Warden Records Wave of Ice Coming at Him
You haven't seen waves until you see waves of ice crashing against the shore. Wyoming Game and Fish Department warden Jim Seeman captured this footage near Buffalo, and it offers a rare glimpse of what happens when you mix high winds and sheets of ice. Of course, homeowners who live close to the shore probably already know about this phenomenon, which can actually damage homes.
In 2013, ice from Lake Mille Lacs were pushed up from strong winds and covered about 10 miles of shoreline, in some cases depositing ice up to 30 feet high.
"It basically has the same mechanism of an iceberg,"...
Video: The Nintendo Glock Zapper in Action
We wouldn't mind playing Duck Hunt with this zapper.
There is little question that Glock handguns are among the easiest and most popular firearms to customize. A Cerakote coating business in Texas, Black Sheep Arms, managed to transform a standard Glock into something that resembled an old Nintendo zapper from the NES era. The best part? The gun actually runs smoothly.

Alaska Iditarod Interrupted by “Snowmobile Attacker,” 1 Dog Killed
2016's iteration of the world-famous Iditarod dog race was interrupted on Saturday when two of the competitors, front-runners Jeff King and Aliy Zirkle, say they were intentionally struck by a snowmobiler in a remote area outside of Nulato, Alaska. According to King and Zirkle's firsthand accounts, the snowmobiler made several passes at their dog teams while on the trail, striking them and wounding several of the dogs. One of the dogs was confirmed to have died in the aftermath of the incident. The snowmobiler, 26-year-old Arnold Demoski, said he was drunk at the time and that the crash was...
Video: Couples that Hunt Together Stay Together, Right?
This video from Realtree does a a great job at depicting hunting couples, especially ones who are really bored and have a long drive before they can unpack their gear. Do you hunt with your significant other? Hunting is a great way to enjoy the outdoors with the people you love, but like any other activity, it requires a certain amount of enthusiasm and dedication to sustain. A great hunting trip can strengthen your bond as a couple---and result in some tasty venison. A bad hunting trip can result in you sleeping on the couch and a week of the good ol' cold shoulder.
Or worse yet, they...
