Florida Man Kisses Bird of Prey, Loses Lip
It may be smaller than a hawk or the bald eagle, but make no mistake, the kestrel is not a bird you want to get close to. A man in Florida reportedly lost a large part of his lip after attempting to kiss a wild kestrel on the beak. According to Suncoast Animal League, an animal shelter in Palm Harbor, Florida, the man encountered an injured kestrel earlier this month and decided to take it home. The bird had no apparent signs of trauma besides some light swelling and a bruised eye---typical of hitting a...
Video: Bowhunter’s Shot Knocks Buck’s Antlers Off
This video shows how an antlered buck can become antlerless in less than two seconds. This Minnesota bowhunter managed to retrieve both the deer he hit and its freshly-separated antlers---and he recorded the whole thing on video.
"It was the last day of the season here in Minnesota when we spotted this buck," read the video's description. "My friend Buzz took a 45 yard shot with his bow and as you see in the video, the horns just fell off. Never saw anything like this before."
As soon as the arrow hit, the buck jerked up and the antlers appeared to have just popped off. Presumably the...
Photos: OATH Ammo Unveils Powerful New Expanding Slugs
There were plenty of surprises from SHOT Show this year, but perhaps one of the most unexpected was the reveal of a new line of expanding and fragmenting slugs from OATH Ammo. The segmented slugs look like something out of science fiction, and OATH boldly states that they've solved the age-old problem of over-penetration from traditional 12 gauge slugs.

Axelson Tactical unveiled their Danny Dietz Tribute Rifle with the help of Danny's mother at SHOT Show 2016 last week.
In 2005, Danny Dietz gave everything to protect his fellow soldiers in a fierce battle against the Taliban. During the fight he was shot several times, but he refused to quit fighting. Marcus Luttrell, of Lone Survivor fame, tried to save Danny by moving him to an area with more cover, but ultimately he succumbed to enemy fire. He was posthumously awarded the US Navy's second-highest award for valorous actions in battle, the Navy Cross, on September 13,...
Coyote “Attacks” in CA Possibly Linked to Hallucinogenic Mushrooms
Are coyotes getting high off hallucinogenic mushrooms? That is one possible reason for a number of encounters in the San Francisco Bay Area recently, where motorists in Stinson Beach and Bolinas have complained about coyotes chasing passing cars, snapping at tires, and even bringing traffic to a halt.
Some now believe that the behavior may be caused by the ingestion of the fly amanita mushroom.
“It’s a terrifying, yet beautiful thing to behold,” an anonymous commuter told The Pacific Sun.
The fly amanita is a...
Video: Smoking 65-year-old Cigarettes from a 1951 Korean War Ration
The creator of this video would most likely agree with the phrase "they don't make 'em like they used to."
Until 1972, the US military included cigarettes in soldiers' war rations. Those American cigarettes made soldiers feel like they had a little piece of home with them while abroad. However, this was before the full health effects of cigarettes were known.
YouTuber Steve1989 MREinfo got his hands on a 1951 Korean War ration which included a pack of Chesterfield unfiltered cigarettes. He was shocked by the potency...
Video: Physicist Risks Life to Demonstrate Underwater Ballistics
One of the foremost rules of gun safety is to always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. That means not pointing a rifle at yourself, and absolutely not rigging it to fire at the pull of a string. However, Norwegian physicist Andreas Wahl is known for taking extreme steps in order to demonstrate science. The daredevil scientist has starred in a number of videos in which he puts his own life on the line in a series of death-defying experiments, and this underwater rifle test is merely the latest.
Bullets travel slower and cover less distance in water. That's pretty much a given....
Quiz: Can You Identify These 10 Lesser-known North American Critters?
Some people think that North American wildlife falls a bit on the boring side. That's probably because we're already familiar with the animals in our backyard---we hunt them, see them, or get annoyed by them all the time.
But what about the critters we don't see or hear about that much?
There's plenty of animals in North America that will still surprise you. See if you can identify these 10 creatures that, with a little luck, you might be able to find in the wild yourself.

Video: This Pneumatic Arrow Gatling Gun Packs a Punch
You won't be hunting any deer with this Coke-bottle-powered arrow launcher, but it still packs a surprising punch.
YouTuber JoergSprave's latest creation is a five-arrow Gatling gun. Unlike most of his other creations, this one is powered by air. He used five coke bottles as the air source for the creation. The coke bottles make the performance of these arrows all the more surprising given that they can withstand very high pressures. The arrows had no problem lodging themselves into a wooden target, which is more than...
Arizona Lawmaker Proposes Tax Credit for CCW Permit Owners
Tax season is nearly here, and if a bill introduced by Arizona House Majority Leader Steve Montenegro (R- Avondale) passes, then Arizona CCW permit owners may get some money back from their taxes.
The bill, HB 2494, would allow those who have CCW permits in Arizona to claim up to $80 in tax credits, which would help to offset the cost of firearms training classes and a separate $60 application fee. Montenegro said he hopes the tax credit will encourage gun owners to apply for a concealed carry permit and promote safety.
"Law enforcement have told us time and again that the first line of...
Anglers: Why You Should Be Wary of “Sneaker Waves”
Whether you call them sneakers, sleepers, kings, or rogue waves, these large and unpredictable movements of water can be very dangerous for the unwary angler. Depending on who you ask, many fishermen may have never even heard of a sneaker wave, or claim they are so rare that they may as well be a myth.
They are certainly rare enough that when caught on camera, they make the news.
Steve Raplee, who owns the High Tide Cafe in Charleston, Oregon, was filming the waves from his restaurant recently when he realized a sneaker wave was headed straight for him. Raplee and the other people in the...

5 Cheap Bush Pot Recipes from a Survival Expert
Some people love camp cooking, and what they pack will show it. When you see someone hauling campfire grills, dutch ovens, and an abundance of ingredients, you know you're in for a good time when it comes to eating. Others however, take a decidedly more spartan approach.
Bush pot and potatoes. Perhaps some meat. Done.
The bush pot is the ultimate camp cooking utensil, as long as you don't mind losing a bit of culinary flexibility. Throw in some chopped potatoes, perhaps some other veggies, a little rice, some meat---freshly harvested or trapped is best---and you're good to go. Bush pot...
Video: Watch a Tablespoon of Olive Oil Kill a Half Acre of Waves in Minutes
Here's your daily dose of science.
Normally the wind can build up waves by pushing on the surface of the water. However, when you add a molecule or two thick layer of oil to the water something very different happens. Because oil molecules are not attracted to water molecules a thin layer spreads out across the top of the water. When the wind blows it pushes against the thin layer of oil which then "slides" across the top of the water. This interesting phenomenon prevents the formation of waves creating a smooth patch around the oil slick.
This might be a neat trick, but we would advise...
Video: Acrobatic Officer Tries Daring Motorcycle Maneuver
We don't know about you, but this doesn't seem very safe to us. This daring police officer demonstrates his balance and skill by standing up on a speeding motorcycle and shouldering his rifle. While the feat is impressive, this is definitely one of those situations where a lot of things can go very badly, very fast. We don't know where or when this was filmed, but the vast majority of viewers speculated that it occurred somewhere in Mexico.
The video reminds us of this man shooting an AK while walking...
Video: AR-15 Selector Lever for Cross Bolt Shotguns at SHOT Show 2016
If you spend a lot of time shooting on the AR platform you are most likely used to the controls. That can be a problem when switching to a shotgun with a cross bolt safety.
Dan Caple, CEO of S2, sat down with OutdoorHub's Ray Care to talk about a solution to that issue. His company makes an AR stley safety lever that replaces the cross bolt safety found on Remington and Benelli Shotguns. Just flip the lever 90 degrees and you can go from safe to fire in an instant. This makes cross-platform firearms training much easier.
This might be something to consider if you send a lot of time...
Actor Chris Pratt to Go on All Wild Game Diet for 1 Year
Well, almost. Chris Pratt, who was most recently in Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy, promised on social media that he would only eat wild game for one year. Except for occasionally the odd hamburger and steak---and fish, eggs, and bacon.
"I'm going to start a diet I called 'The Game Plan' where basically I only eat wild game for a year. 'The Game Plan,' get it? Cause GAME? I mean I'll also eat veggies and fruit and other stuff too. But for one year I want to eat only the meats that were caught or killed by me or my friends. Total free range organic wild game!...
New from Lancer: Carbon Fiber SIG MPX Handguard
Lancer makes super-cool gear for ARs and other rifles including buttstocks, handguards, and ultra-durable magazines. This year they branched out into another platform with the launch of their new MPX carbon fiber handguard at SHOT Show.
The company has fully embraced M-LOK and the new handguard is chock-full of attachment points. The holes are not only at the traditional three, six, and nine o’clock positions but also at 45-degree angles between the three and six and six and nine o’clock positions, so you can mount gear exactly where you want it.
The handguard will be offered in...
Senate Committee Approves Amendment on Bill to Delist Wolves in 4 States
On Wednesday the US Senate Environment and Public Works Committee approved an amendment on the Bipartisan Sportsmen's Act of 2016 that would remove federal protections from gray wolves in Wyoming, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. Wolves in these states were only recently returned to the Endangered Species List---and the protections afforded within---after a decision by a federal court in late 2014. Since then, the protected status of the species has been a controversial issue in the four states.
The amendment to the bill came from Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyoming) and Senator Ron...
