Alligator Tries to Eat Bobcat Sitting on Florida Shore

Wed, 11/18/2015 - 12:31

Alligators are voracious predators and not even bobcats are completely safe from their jaws. A resident of Tampa, Florida captured these amazing images of an alligator coming within inches of catching a bobcat. The alligator attempted to surprise the bobcat by slowly inching towards it on the shore. Just as the alligator was within striking distance the bobcat noticed the predator behind it. The bobcat was able to leap away just as the alligator lunged in for the kill. These rare images show that gators will try and eat just about anything even a cunning predator like a bobcat. Luckily...

Washington State Officials Confirm New Opah Record

Wed, 11/18/2015 - 12:14

Opah! Officials with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced on Tuesday that the state has a new record opah, thanks to a visiting angler from Idaho. Jim Watson of Couer d'Alene caught the vibrantly red fish with anchovies 45 miles offshore of Westport in September. The fish was weighed at 35.67 pounds and measured 37-7/8 inches in length. “Catching the fish was a lot of work, but fun. They really fight, and it took a while,” Watson told officials. “The captain and crew came unglued, because you just don’t see...

Video: Conservation Officer’s Deer Rescue Footage Goes Viral

Wed, 11/18/2015 - 10:01

Conservation officers don't have easy jobs. When an officer with Idaho Fish and Game discovered an entangled buck near Orofino in August, he knew it would go one of two ways. "This might be a video of me getting my butt kicked, or it might turn out alright," Game Conservation Officer John McLain said in a recent press release. McLain has dealt with deer rescues before and knew from experience that they can be more than tricky---they can be downright dangerous. He has released deer from soccer nets and even a baseball batting cage, but this time the animal had seemingly entangled itself...

Weird Hunts: Bagging Feral Cows in Hawaii

Wed, 11/18/2015 - 07:38

Did you know that Hawaii is one of the few states where you can legally hunt feral cows? Furthermore, did you know that the feral cattle problem in Kailua was once so bad, the "Great Wall of Kuakini" was built to keep them out? Cows are the last animals you'd expect to turn in an invasive species, but the feral cattle of Hawaii are proving a little bit too resilient for officials to handle. There are currently thousands of wild cows roaming around the countryside and forests of the Big Island. While they are still easily recognizable as the domestic cattle you would find on a farm, over...

Wed, 11/18/2015 - 07:23

Forget the rods and forget the lures, you're not going to be catching these behemoth fish anytime soon. Due to the popularity of our articles on large ancient deer and bears, we decided to do one on fish as well. All the species on this list are already extinct, but you'd likely have a hard time catching these fish even if they weren't. What kind of line...

Video: Angler Gets Bitten by Snake During Fish Release

Tue, 11/17/2015 - 15:32

The number one rule of being in the great outdoors is to always be aware of your surroundings. Knowing what kind of dangerous animals live in your neck of the woods could save you a lot of trouble down the road. For this angler in Thailand, what started out as pretty standard fish release ended badly when a large watersnake decided to chomp down on his hand. It looks like it got him pretty good. On the bright side, few watersnakes in Thailand are actually venomous. The ones you have to look out for---the cobras and pit vipers---tend to stick to dry land. Anglers in the Southeastern...

The BAREBOW! Chronicles: The Parallax Surprise

Tue, 11/17/2015 - 15:10

If the previous illustration of Murphy’s Law in action wasn’t enough to stupefy the mind, this next one surely will be. Three nights after the last story took place, we were out in the small boat once more, when suddenly the half-light of 2:30 a.m. revealed another big boar walking the low beach trail in a northerly direction. This one looked to be a good eight-footer. Again, we managed to get well ahead of him without his knowledge, and---after completing the tricky...

Tue, 11/17/2015 - 14:48

Students at Florida's Brandon High School had a rude surprise waiting for them Monday morning after a dead deer was found hanging from a flagpole. The scene was discovered by students as they made their way to class Monday morning. They were welcomed by a dead four-point buck hanging by its hind legs from the school's flag pole. Authorities believe the deer was placed there as a prank, but they are still not unsure why someone would do something like that.

UPDATE: Deputies not sure if it's a crime to hang a dead

The Best Rifles for Predator Hunting

Tue, 11/17/2015 - 13:54

You’ve got the electronic caller going and it’s squealing like a rabbit in distress. The motion decoy is flopping around and you’re completely hidden off to the left of it, with a clear view of the field. A hint of movement at the brush lets you know the calling is paying off---there’s at least one coyote coming in. The ‘yote works down the edge of the field, still not presenting you with a clear shot. He pops up at over 200 yards. Something has him cautious. Still, you’ve got him. One well-placed shot is all it takes. That’s what separates a Read more »

Video: Deer Chases Down, Scares Off Lone Coyote

Tue, 11/17/2015 - 12:05

Coyotes are effective predators in packs, but this lone coyote might be all bark and no bite. A Calgary resident filmed this odd encounter between a lone coyote and a whitetail doe. The deer in the video appears to chase down and intimidate a coyote, and it eventually scares it off. The uploader of the video speculated that the coyote may have attacked her fawn and this display was meant to protect her offspring. Whatever the background story, this behavior is not often captured on video. More commonly people usually observe deer being attacked by coyotes, so it's interesting to watch a...

New Jersey Lawmakers Propose Rehaul of “Smart Gun” Law

Tue, 11/17/2015 - 11:48

It has been nearly 13 years since New Jersey legislators passed the controversial Childproof Handgun Law, or the so-called "smart gun" law. Approved in December 2002, the law states that if a personalized handgun---a firearm that can only be fired by its owner---is available for retail purchase anywhere in the country, then in three years no New Jersey firearms manufacturer or dealer could sell anything other than personalized handguns. The law was criticized by Second Amendment advocates and gun owners since it would mean massive changes if smart guns ever came to market. Until...

Video: Slingbow Fisherman Catches Large Asian Carp

Tue, 11/17/2015 - 09:51

Slingbows may not be mainstream yet, but there's no denying that more and more hunters and fishermen are looking into the device to harvest game. In this video, an eagle-eyed bowslinger lands a perfect shot on a hefty Asian carp just as it leaps out of the water. We've seen bigger, but this is still a very impressive catch on a bowsling. If only more people liked actually eating Asian carp, we might be able to make a dent on this invasive species. Unfortunately, many anglers agree that Asian carp tastes like a combination of fishy tire rubber and soggy cardboard. It is...

Mon, 11/16/2015 - 15:07

Catching the world's largest freshwater fish is no easy task, but releasing it is an even more delicate matter. Zeb Hogan, a University of Nevada, Reno biologist and the host of National Geographic WILD's Monster Fish, was on hand to help release a rarely-seen Mekong giant catfish after anglers in Cambodia caught it last Monday near Phnom Penh. "This is really extraordinary," Hogan said in a press release from the university. "It confirms that this incredibly rare and critically endangered freshwater...

Mon, 11/16/2015 - 13:47

What happens when you combine two YouTube gun channels, a whole lot of firearms, explosives, and an APC? You get one very broken house and a very high production bill. Popular YouTubers FPSRussia and Richard Ryan of FullMag (formerly RatedRR) pooled together their resources to make the following video, which they note as one of the most expensive so far in their careers. That house looks pretty nice from the outside. We really hope they didn't get the wrong address and accidentally...

Dan Bilzerian Says Police Confiscated Guns to “Protect Them from Burglars”

Mon, 11/16/2015 - 11:29

In September, professional poker player and actor Dan Bilzerian reported that burglars broke into his Los Angeles home and attempted to steal a number of guns from a locked vault. In addition to his other pursuits, Bilzerian has a made a reputation for himself on social media by consistently showcasing a large number of firearms---often held by scantily-clad models---and uploading pictures of the interior of his well-stocked gun vault. It seems that those pictures not only cemented Bilzerian's image as a gun-loving socialite, but also drew interest from the criminals. Police said in...

Louisiana is a Redfish Haven

Mon, 11/16/2015 - 10:30

The salty and brackish marshes of southern Louisiana produce outstanding redfish throughout most of the year, but the fall and winter months are the prime times to catch huge bull reds. While my friends in the northern part of the country are bracing for cold weather and breaking out their ice fishing gear, I head for the warmer climate of the gulf to chase redfish. Louisiana redfishing regulations are some of the most generous in the gulf and allow a limit of five fish. All must be above 16 inches, with one allowed over 27 inches. In addition to possessing some of the finest fishing in...

Video: Buck Walks Up to Car Window and Sneezes on Driver

Mon, 11/16/2015 - 09:59

It turns out that hunters are not the only ones chasing after deer during the rut. Motorists are also fond of stopping to gawk at the animals. There's nothing wrong with taking a brief stop on an empty side street to take some photos of deer, but if you're going to do that, make sure you aren't separating the buck from his does. Otherwise he might just come up to you and express his displeasure. In this case, that displeasure came in the form of a sneeze, not forcefully removing the car's side view mirror with his antlers. https://youtu.be/2RyiAv1E-PY...
