Video: Trail Cam Captures Skunk Doing a Handstand

Wed, 11/04/2015 - 14:16

Trail cams capture things you would not normally see in the woods, and this skunk doing a handstand falls into that category. A National Parks service trail cam captured this incredible footage in Arizona's Saguaro National Park. The spotted skunk in this video is most likely trying to intimidate a potential threat. Oftentimes when a skunk is threatened they will position themselves to spray a potential attacker. While this may be an effective intimidation strategy for skunks it's certainly entertaining from a human perspective.

Video: Insane Urban Stunts in a Tricked Out Polaris UTV

Wed, 11/04/2015 - 13:16

Most UTVs find their home in the backwoods, but not this Polaris RZR XP Turbo. This specialized machine was built by Mad Media for stunt driver RJ Anderson. The modified RZR has over 200 HP which makes launching off jumps easier than with the stock model. The location for this video looks like an apocalyptic wasteland, but it's actually just abandoned steel mills, old factories, and train yards near Youngstown, Ohio. If you really want to test out the abilities of a UTV this is probably the perfect way to do it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Kdk7PFlQXg...

Wed, 11/04/2015 - 12:41

Lawmakers in the Great Lakes region are urging immediate action after a recent survey found silver carp 76 miles from Lake Michigan, the closest that species has ever come to that lake. According to the Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee, sampling crews from the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) discovered the two small Asian carp as part of an on-going monitoring plan in waterways near the Great Lakes. The fish were found in the Marseilles Pool of the Illinois River on October 22 and were captured by electrofishing. "These small fish are approximately 12 miles closer than our...

Video: Man Wears Roadkill Skin to Attack Beehive

Wed, 11/04/2015 - 09:26

Now before you get the idea that the man in this video has no idea what he's doing, or is in some sort of strange-----and uniquely Australian---cult, we'd like to remind you that he is a professional. Or at least he claims to be. Remember Andrew Ucles? The Australian primitive survival expert may not be producing as many videos today as he did in the past, but his latest one was perhaps his craziest. Keep in mind that this is a man who earned his fame by catching animals such as...

Video: “Dead” Deer Jumps out of Car Trunk

Tue, 11/03/2015 - 15:47

Deer vehicle collisions cost the American public over a billion dollars per year. In most places in the United States drivers are allowed to claim the animal which can make up for some of the repair cost of a collision. That's what a Michigan man had in mind when he put a "dead" deer in his trunk after hitting the animal whit his car. However, the deer was not dead. It was simply knocked unconscious after the accident. The man put the unconscious deer in the trunk of his car where it had time to regain...

Video: Vicious Buck Fight Leaves This Deer a Contortionist

Tue, 11/03/2015 - 15:01

Ouch. That looks really painful. Deer are pretty graceful, but even their legs shouldn't be able to wrap around their own antlers like some kind of fashionable scarf. This high octane fight between two males---and one that tried to butt in---ended up in a contortionist act for one of the deer. Apparently the two animals went at each other so aggressively, one of the bucks ended up catching his hoof on his own antlers. Luckily, its rival decided to give it some space to untangle itself and after what appears to be a painful detachment, the buck was able to walk normally again. "He's going...

Wisconsin Officials Confirm Extremely Rare Mule Deer Taken by Hunter

Tue, 11/03/2015 - 13:51

How did a wild mule deer find its way into Wisconsin? This photo of a mule deer buck first surfaced earlier this week, and while the deer itself may not seem especially significant, where it was harvested is. According to various rumors on social media, the buck was taken by Randy Haines near Amery, Wisconsin with a bow and arrow. If that is true, it could be the first recorded mule deer buck ever taken in the Badger State. OutdoorHub contacted the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which confirmed that the buck was in fact a mule deer, and that it was legally harvested near...

A hunt for one of these creatures is a once in a lifetime opportunity, but 14-year-old Kavin Roberts was not hunting for bear when he came across one in late October. Instead, the Kodiak native and his uncle were out chasing deer when they stumbled into an adult Kodiak that had been stalking them. According to Alaska State Troopers, the bear had started following the pair during their deer hunt and ambushed them in an unspecified location on Kodiak Island, Alaska. Being a more...

5 Prehistoric Bear Species That Dwarf Modern Bears

Mon, 11/02/2015 - 16:09

Compared to ancient bears, modern bears are relatively tame. Then again, today's bruins don't have to carve out territory from other terrifying predators such as saber-toothed cats, packs of dire wolves, cave lions, and even massive carnivorous, cow-sized pigs that were more likely to charge you---and eat you---then run away. Ancient bears did all that and what's more, they were usually the strongest of the strong. Other predators might be quicker or even smarter, but beyond the dinosaurs, few land predators could boast to be as powerful as a bear. Here is our list of five ancient,...

World War Meets Cold War: M14 vs SVT-40

Mon, 11/02/2015 - 15:27

There's something satisfying about being able to buy a historically-significant battle rifle for under $500. This is especially true if you live in Canada, where gun bans from the 1990s effectively knocked off most of the Cold War classics. The FN FAL family, all G3 variants, and most surplus M14s were banished to the safes of their owners, never to see the light of a range again. That leaves us woefully under-gunned when it comes to serious battle rifles, but two affordable options exist in this frozen northern wasteland I call home. For just a few hundred canuck-bucks, you can set...

The Future of NRA Education Programs

Mon, 11/02/2015 - 11:34

Most people think of the National Rifle Association as a political organization. While the related entity, the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) is, in fact, a political group, the core NRA is really a training and education organization. When you send your membership dues, you’re supporting programs like the Eddie Eagle child safety initiative. When you choose not to join the NRA, you’re not withholding your hard-earned money from political lobbying, you’re choosing not to...
