Strutting Hens: A Rare Sight in the Turkey Woods
John Obst of McFarland, Wisconsin has seen a true woodland rarity in consecutive springs, and he’s hoping for a three-peat during Wisconsin’s 2015 spring turkey season.
What has Obst twice seen that most turkey hunters have not seen once? A hen turkey in full strut.
Obst was hunting turkeys on a southern Wisconsin farm in April 2013, and called in a hen that was likely curious about his yelps. When the hen saw Obst’s hen decoy, it went into full strut. Obst is an experienced hunter, and has seen hens get aggressive a few times, but had never before seen one do such a dead-on...
Photos: Apple iWatch Designer Crafts Beretta Shotgun
What happens when a designer for Apple joins forces with the world's oldest gun maker? Well, the result is actually quite pleasant. That is perhaps because the designer in question is none other than Marc Newson, a legendary figure in the world of industrial design. In the past, Newson has worked on everything from bikes, to furniture, to timepieces, and even concept planes. Now Newson has employed his skills to design a new version of Beretta's 486 shotgun.
“To be asked to design for Beretta, one of the oldest companies in the...
Study: Male Chimps Hunt Barehanded, Females More Likely to Use Spears
A study recently published in the Royal Society Open Science found that in at least one population of chimps, females are much more likely to use spears and other hunting tools than males. The research was conducted by a team led by Iowa State University anthropology professor Jill Pruetz, documenting over 300 tool-assisted hunts. The study was focused primarily on a group of savanna chimpanzees in Fongoli, Senegal. The Fongoli chimps differed from most other primates in that it is one of the few non-human...
Video: Kirsten Joy Weiss Pulls Off an Unbelievable Blindfolded Trick Shot
Is Kirsten Joy Weiss a Jedi? Maybe because using the Force seems to be the easiest explanation for this blindfolded trick shot. In the video Kirsten shoots a balloon using her custom .22 rifle from about 20 yards away, while blindfolded. Years of training and a little bit of luck are what helped her pull off this shot.

Video: Man Catches Giant Bass with Just His Hands
While noodling for bass isn't exactly anything new, but the casual manner in which this man pulls a massive fish out of the water is just astounding. The video was uploaded by Robert Earl Woodard, a self-professed country boy who grew up in the woods and rivers of Blount County, Alabama. Now enjoying retirement, Woodard spends his time working on the farm, fishing, and writing his stories down on paper. He recently published a collection of short stories in The Way It Was Back Then, detailing life before high-tech tools and modern...
Viral Video Quickly Leads to Winchester SXP Shotgun Recall
There is a reason that one of the most important rules of firearm safety is to keep your gun pointed in a safe direction at all times. This is true whether the gun is unloaded, your finger is off the trigger, or if the safety is on. Sometimes, it's especially true if you think your safety is activated. A viral video uploaded to YouTube last Friday quickly garnered more than 600,000 views, along with raising a fair bit of concern for shotgun owners. In it, a gun owner demonstrated a rare and extremely hazardous malfunction for the Winchester SXP shotgun. According to the video...
Video: How to Make a Deer Antler “Bolt-action” Pen
Here's a neat little DIY project if you're looking for something to do with your smaller sheds. This step-by-step video from WoodworkingManiak covers the instructions for making your very own antler "bolt-action" pen. Granted, you will need a fair amount of tools and a lot of elbow grease for this project, but the results are remarkable. We really wish he had gone into more detail on where he got the bolt-action pen casing, which looks a bit like the one found Read more »
Breaking Down 5 Different 300 Blackout Loads’ Terminal Ballistics
Given the level of interest in the 300 AAC Blackout (commonly referred to as 300 BLK) caliber, and my obsession with unusual chamberings, I thought it would be interesting to take a closer look at exactly what the cartridge does. As one of the intents behind the development of this cartridge was to provide better terminal effectiveness when fired from short-barreled rifles, I decided to do some basic tests along those lines.
Use of a short-barrel configuration instead of a full 16-inch rifle barrel will cause a drop in muzzle velocity up to several hundred feet per second. It’s exactly...

The driver, who has not been named, fired six shots from his firearm and struck Custodio in the shin, thigh, and lower back. No other...
4 Bowhunting Gadgets You Didn’t Know You Need
I’m not much of a gadget guy normally, but I do admit to taking too much stuff into the woods with me when I go hunting. My pack has the essentials that I would normally need during a day’s hunting, plus a few things that would make life easier, and safer, in the event of an emergency.
I have come across a few nifty things that make the life of a hunter easier, safer and even more fun. Here’s a rundown of four things that I recommend you have along when you hunt.
1. Gear hangers
Every treestand hunter understands the importance of having your bow and other gear within easy reach....
Video: Homemade .70-caliber Aluminum “Turbine” Shotgun Slugs in Action
What do you get when you know a professional machinist and he just so happens to have a chunk of aluminum at his disposal? If you're YouTube personality TAOFLEDERMAUS, you get these large, rifled aluminum slugs. In addition to other things, TAOFLEDERMAUS is known for pushing shotguns to their limits by shooting shells loaded with an assortment of weird objects. To absolutely nobody's surprise, most of these score pretty horribly in the accuracy department, and viewers have often said that it's because of a lack of rifling. Well, this...

Video: Is This the Longest Pistol Barrel Ever Made?
No, the image above is not from some strange live-action Looney Tunes reboot. According to Jeremy S., the uploader of the video the image is taken from, the barrel sticking out of the business end of his CZ P-09's frame is a full meter long. Apparently he was seeking a barrel that was just three inches longer than the standard 4.5 inches, but the metal supplier could only provide pipes in one-foot and one-meter lengths. He decided to have a little fun with both before cutting them down. Understandably, the pistol has trouble functioning properly with both. Check 'em out...
Video: Make Your Own “Augmented Reality” Topo Map with Sand
Remember when kids played in a sandbox instead of on controllers in front of a TV? Well, researchers have found a way to combine video games with good old-fashioned sand, and its applications go far beyond just play for kids. This is the Augmented Reality Sand Table, a concept under development by both private university and military researchers. Eventually, scientists hope to be able to utilize the technology to project real-time topographical maps in the field, or to be used to study freshwater streams and watersheds. One day, it may even be used to plan out your next hunting or fishing...
Does Your University Offer Scholarships for Hunters and Anglers? This One Does
College is expensive and is getting more expensive by the year. One small university in Alabama wants to make college more affordable, especially for students who love to hunt or fish. The University of Montevallo recently announced its President's Outdoor Scholars program, an initiative led by university president Dr. John Stewart to support students who are outdoor enthusiasts and to provide them with partial scholarships. It's a unique approach not taken by many universities, but Stewart hopes that the program will draw new students to the school.
“We live in an area of the country...
Century-old Shipwrecks Revealed Off the Coast of Lake Michigan
Anglers who frequent Lake Michigan's shoreline may be in for a special surprise over the weeks to come. With the ice gone and the lake once again returning to the crystal clear, blue waters that it is known for, residents of northern Michigan can see the remnants of old shipwrecks off the shore. A patrol from the US Coast Guard Station at Traverse City recently sighted at least two century-old wrecks near Sleeping Bear Point. The area is part of the Manitou Passage, an underwater preserve that has become the final resting...

Outdoor Edge Brush Demon and Wood Devil
That's a neat pair of matching names. Knife makers, as opposed to the designers of other tools, can be perhaps forgiven for their propensity to give their products odd and sensational names. After all, a lot of skill and passion go into designing these things. Still, could you imagine a company producing a garden rake called the "Stray Leaf and Dog Poop Obliterator," or a hammer with "Chiefest and Greatest of All Nail Pounders" as a moniker?
Yeah, it would be absurd. But I would probably still buy them.
Anyways, Outdoor Edge was gracious enough to send a Read more »
Video: When You Realize That 3 Inches of Glass Separate You from an Angry Gorilla
Kids will be kids, and what is more natural than children pretending to be animals at a zoo? One little girl, however, found out to her horror that animals can take these acts seriously---and that the glass separating them may not be enough protection. After watching this video, we probably won't be pounding our chests in front of a gorilla any time soon.
